Description:
My last post---Janus Faced---was rather serious and introspective. It’s time for a change! So here’s a little something for you in a kind of Stones/Faces mode (i.e., loose and full of juice).
Heartfelt thanks to fellow Goodwilly and guitar-slinger extraordinare Vic Holman. He kindly contributed the lead soloing, the rhythmic guitar jabs (choruses), and the background vocals (choruses).
While PC-ness is sacrificed herein (as it ever should be) for honesty’s sake, this is NOT intended as a piece of socio-political commentary. It is offered as a species of kick-butt fun!
I hope you can enjoy it for what it is!
PS: The views expressed in this song are not necessarily those of the Vicar! Ha ha...
Lyrics:
SENSE OF DIRECTION
I.
You got the low-cut top and stilleto heel;
what’cha tryin’ to prove?
...Walkin’ in here dressed like all that!
Time for this ol’ boy to move...
II.
You got that little girl laugh, and that foxy strut;
you’re turnin’ every head you see.
This boy’s headin’ for the door!
I ain’t in high school anymore...
CHORUS:
Honey you drive me wild!
Something about your style!
Don’t want to vote in your election.
I want no part of this inspection...
Something about your style!
Honey it drives me wild!
I’m afraid of this connection.
You corrupt my sense of direction...
[Oh yeah...
Walk away!
Yeah!
That’s what I’m talkin’ about...
Rock!
Yeaaaaahhh...
Now Listen!]
III.
You know I been around, I know all the parts.
You ain’t got nothin’ new!
Run along home, put some clothes on girl!
Find something else to do!
IV.
What can you be thinkin’, with your
struttin’ and winkin’?
Is it bloated self-esteem?
Maybe it’s just a cry for help,
...makes you want to invade my dream.
CHORUS:
Honey you drive me wild!
Something about your style!
Don’t want to vote in your election.
I want no part of this inspection...
Something about your style!
Honey it drives me wild!
I’m afraid of this connection.
You corrupt my sense of direction...
[Alright...Rock!]

definitely a nice loose feel love the guitar playing. cool vocals has style for sure. almost a rockabilly feel but more experimental. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you Chance! &mdash 04/16/08 - 12:15:12 PM
Yes, I can hear the rockabilly element. Both the Stones and the Faces often utilized that "feel." I was especially thinking of Ron Woods' rhythm playing as I recorded this.
Glad you enjoyed it...

after i wrote that i was listening more and it also has a tad of 80's metal feel except that it's not crappy. perhaps it was because of the vocals but it sort of had that front man on stage sort of power at times. [ Reply to This ]

Interesting observation Chance. Although I hear 80's Glam-Rock more than I do any 80's Metal...But they're so close after all.
I'm also relieved to hear you don't think it sounds "crappy"! Ha ha... [ Reply to This ]

I've gotten that "Talking Heads" comparison several times in the past. Especially in relation to some of my singing. Funny thing is...I've never HEARD them (to my knowledge anyway). But I have become aware of their popularity and take the comparison as a compliment.
Ha ha...Happy to have kicked your ass a little here my friend!

Well who cares... this is great rocky song Mike with that wonderful soloing from Vic adding something a bit special. Sounds great too... punchy and 'in-yer-face' - ideal for this song! Good fun!

Like the handclaps... don't know why but this reminded me of Ian Hunter! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Peter... &mdash 04/16/08 - 01:23:42 PM
Yes, the object here is to be fun and in your face (as befits the topic at hand).
RE Vic's lead: I really had no idea what he would do and offered him no suggestions. I told him I trusted his instincts and to go for it. Well, he sure did! He totally nailed the spirit and sound of this piece...
Glad you enjoyed my little hand-clapping experiment. It's the first time I've ever tried that. They are real handclaps on two tracks. Although it felt silly while I was recording them I think they sound good in the mix.
Glad you enjoyed the tune. Always good to hear from you my friend!

Hi Karen! &mdash 04/16/08 - 01:49:04 PM
I must confess...this WAS a lot of fun to record. Although the keys were tedious work, I had a great time singing this (1 take on the vox). Vic appears to have enjoyed himself on his lead parts and rhythmic jabs as well. Seems he always knows just what to do!
So glad you enjoyed this bit of tomfoolery Karen!

You chose my favorite guitarist to play on this.
The song, your voice and the keys are all excellent on this.
Lyrics are also super.
Not blowing smoke.
Love the clapping, too.

Hi David! &mdash 04/16/08 - 01:57:24 PM
Vic is always my first choice as a guitarist. We just seem to work together so well, and he always seems to nail the spirit of anything you send him to play on. A truly talented and generous individual.
It was big fun to sing this.
A confession: I'm no keyboardist you know. It took me two days to piece together the organ parts for this tune. Then it took at least another full afternoon to get them mixed.
The drum track was even harder than the keys! Several sections are pieced together from single hits on the snare and the toms. I spent a full day on them.
So then, about three days of recording, and at least a full week of mixing (somewhere around 28 bounces before I was happy with it); and voila!
I appreciate the enthusiastic and candid review my friend. I'm sure Vic will too.

Hey &mdash 04/16/08 - 04:02:07 PM

Great job. Splicing and dicing is not always so easy.

Thanks again David.... &mdash 04/16/08 - 10:39:51 PM
RE the "confession"....I'm not feeling guilty. I just don't want people to believe I can play something, when in fact I can't.
In all my tunes I try to imagine what it would sound like if I had an actual band. What parts would they play here or there?
Once I can hear a part in my head, I try to move heaven and earth to reproduce what I'm hearing. Sometimes I luck out and pull it off! Ha ha... [ Reply to This ]

Hey, thank you Dee! &mdash 04/16/08 - 03:16:40 PM
RE Marilyn: I only chose that pic because it's the most universally recognized example of what I'm singing about here. I was never a fan while growing up, but recently I saw an old western with her and Robert Mitchum. I was very impressed with her performance! There was certainly more to this poor woman than her looks or her reputation!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this. Prior to posting I was a tad apprehensive that some female MJers might misunderstand the intention of this tune and think it somewhat chauvinistic...So far, so good!

.. a little David Byrne. & early D.Bowie elements in the vocals - cool! I keep hearing the Stranglers tones in alot of uploads featuring prominent keys these days .. so pay no heed ...lol.

Im with Alan on this one. &mdash 04/16/08 - 04:49:57 PM
I picked up a lot of early Bowie on it too. Be that as it may, I must say that I really just get the good vibey rockin' fun vibe you wanted us to get. Didnt get any socio-politically-ness from it at all except for the word election and couched with the phraseing of the rest of the lyrics its easily assimilated as a sexy sexy rock song.
I dig, I do indeed :D great work both of you! [ Reply to This ]

Hi Tom! &mdash 04/16/08 - 10:26:53 PM
Thanks for the accolades friend. Yes, a piece like this is a hell of a lot of work.
RE Vic: I just asked him to throw a few leads on it and help out a bit on the background vocals. But he went NUTSO, and I'm really glad he did!
I appreciate the thumbs up on the vocals man. I think I'm finally to the point where I can listen to my own vox without gagging. The cool thing is that these vocals are all just one take. I somehow got into the zone I guess...

jeez, seems like a long time since. I like what you have done since I last heard it. the slap back echo on the vocals and the hand claps sure add something good. Plus a nice warm sound as well.
Does the Marilyn photo mean that you are the secret purchaser of the M. Monroe sex tape? ha.
Nicely put together Mike! [ Reply to This ]
Sex tape? &mdash 04/16/08 - 10:32:03 PM
You scoundrel you...No one was supposed to know!!!
I'm glad I waited to post this. I think I went through 28 mixes before settling on this one.
RE the hand claps: I felt like a doofus during the recording of them, but I like how they sound in the choruses.
RE the effected vocals: Yeah, the original sound didn't seem to fit. The slap-back gave them that old time rock n' roll feel.
The rest was bringing all the disparate elements into balance and getting the compression just right. I think the version I sent you last was way too compressed.
Thanks for doing such a kick-ass job on the leads and chops Vic!

Well now, Vic... &mdash 04/16/08 - 11:47:03 PM
As I listened to the song and read the posts, I had planned to ask Mike the same question about the M tape... both of us must have that same warped sense of... well, sense of something ;)
Mike,
Great, good time rocker of a song. Solid playing and singing... really impressive stuff you are strutting (ala Mick the lip). And Vic, as you say is the best and none better to collab with. You two are hitting that sought after pro sound in your songs. Kudos.

Thanks Thomas. Yeah, that's the subtle joke here. What would it sound like if bands like the Stones and the Faces questioned current sexual mores instead of glorifying them?
But mostly I just wanted to have---and to convey---a rockin' good time!
