Description:
When my sister-in-law was diagnosed with 5th stage lung cancer, she took to serious meditation. As a musician and composer, I had never tried my hand at ambient music - and decided to write some meditation pieces for her. Sadly, she passed on a couple of months ago - but I was honored to be able to provide some comfort through music. I have just discovered this website and have heard some really interesting music already. Ambient music is a challenge because you have to resist the temptation for over-development and work with spaces. I have decided to post these meditations in hopes that I will receive some advice and feedback from the many talented composers and musicians in this community. Many Thanks!

making music to help another is a great reason to create it. i'm not skilled in the genre so don't know i can give too much critical feedback. it sounds relaxing. i like the change right near the end the addition adds a lot. it could perhaps continue a little bit and than sort of go back to the main theme from the first part of the track.

I normally do bring back the theme - but I was writing toward transition and change. On the other meditations, the theme comes back with a different feel - perhaps I should have done this here. Thanks for your input.

or even prolong the ending part. i think when it changes near the end that's the best part of it.

I'm terribly sorry to hear of your loss, but am glad to see you could offer her some comfort with musical gifts, I'm sure she appreciated them greatly. Of course, with such a personal and touching connection, its hard to think of critiques... but I'll offer what I can. Overall, this fits well in the ambient genre, and does create a somewhat contemplative mood. The very light touches of dissonance here and there are just enough to catch a little attention, without heading into anxiety or foreboding. You have a light build-up to the final piano end, which teeters on the brink and really wants to slide back into a part 2, but instead you stop... so like Chance (ScreamAlexz) mentioned, this should be doubled. You could repeat the first part but with slight changes in instrumentation for the second half, for example.

Now that I've gone to read your bio, perhaps some very gentle legato cello bowing floating in and out would really add to this :-) Do you have microphone/recording abilities? As a cellist, you'll soon be having all sorts of people asking to collaborate with you here, I am sure.

ttfn,
Drakonis

I have also enjoyed some of your music and look forward to further discussion. As to the returning theme - I explained by intentions above - but think you both might be right. Is a cellist, I experiment with both acoustic and electric varieties (I have a yamaha silent cello but actually prefer the acoustic with a condensor so far). Although that is my formal training, I am probably more accomplished as a guitarist - but I would be thrilled to collaborate in any way. Thanks for your kind comments - I didn't mean for the grief bit to put people off giving critiques - my sister is out of pain and I'm glad I could help with her transition in a small way.

first let me say &mdash 04/18/08 - 08:36:40 PM
great work here this is just right, being an artist it set a great mood for painting. I am sorry to hear about your loss it always a good thing when you can express an event in music. I like the end where the piano comes in but then it cuts out. Anyway I think it is a very soothing piece of music thanks for sharing

I try to make conscious decisions in music and not do anything too flippantly. The brief piano melody represents an all too brief life - I wanted to give the listener a taste but leave them yearning. Hope it makes sense.

Hi Luna: as with others, so sorry to hear of this loss for you - and yes, how wonderful you were able to help her with your lovely music. I think drak's comments are really insightful ( as always) and a cello would be so great. And like he said, you'll start getting interest in collabs, so hang onto your hat!

Thanks for your kind words... &mdash 04/20/08 - 06:48:11 PM
As this was the piece she listened to - I am not going to change it. I am getting the feedback for future ambient pieces though.
