Keywords:
gregd (23)classical (372)electronic (280)experiment (30)ostinato (2)passacaglia (1) ()
Description:
As the title states, this is a serial, atonal composition. Each ostinato is either 15 or 30 beats in length. The piece is in 15/4.

Lately, I've been fascinated with the randomizing AU's availble for GarageBand and Logic. The idea of the computer "soloing" is peculiar and it makes me smile. Consequently, I wrote this piece to enable space for these randomizing AU's, mostly written by the good people at Smartelectronix, to do what they do best.

Hope it's palatable,
-g

Schoenberg would be proud! &mdash 04/18/08 - 08:36:11 PM
Cool experiment - how many pieces have been written in 15/4?

haven't met you here before.

I don't know how many pieces have been written in 15/4, or if Schöenberg would be proud (I didn't use 12-tone sets, it's just free-atonal). But I'm glad it caught your ear.

Cheers,
-greg

Yep - a newbie! &mdash 04/18/08 - 10:19:56 PM
Just found the place and loving it. So far, posted my alt-rock stuff - but getting ready to upload my recent classical compositions - and would really love your feedback. Cheers!

this is awesome. i loove stuff like this, and you did a great job. despite the atonality (or maybe because of this), i find it to be very accessible. i could listen to this all day. seriously. excellent track.

thanks for the high marks. It's nice to know that this kind of music isn't only mental masturbation.

Wonderful &mdash 04/19/08 - 05:54:08 PM
Really lovely piece. I've been fantasizing about experimenting with computer generated melodies, but lack the drive and the know how. It's wonderful to hear a dream come true without having to do any of the work! It is very palatable, scrumchus, in fact. I think this tracks going to on my next mix cd. Thanks!

By all means . . . &mdash 04/19/08 - 07:27:45 PM
put it on a cd, give it to friends for house-warming presents, listen to it over spaghetti dinners with your nextdoor neighbor---just don't charge anybody for it.

Thanks for listening and commenting. If you want to collaborate on a tune, I'd be happy to help you out with those computer-generated melodies.

Cheers,
-g

Wowza &mdash 04/19/08 - 11:51:24 PM
Just like that, huh? That would be great. I don't know the first thing about collaborating on a tune (neither in real presence or virtual absence) but I'd love to take you up on your offer. Please let me know what I can/should do, if your offer stands.

Serial ostinati &mdash 04/20/08 - 01:05:03 AM
This is very cool, I love when there is a lot of construction work in a composition, but the result and the sound are just captivating, so that the listener can enjoy and forget the effort. Very well composed, bravo!

I didn't even know 15/4 was possible. You're a magician - and this is really cool Greg!

I believe it was my mom who said, "Anything is possible." Or maybe I was watching some wishy-washy movie like The Rookie.
Anyway, my point is that anything is possible, even if your mother doesn't like the sound of your music and ends up eating her words fifteen years later!

Thanks for stopping by,

ever contemplated on using Cycling '74 Max/MSP? Dig this Autechre style piece. Palatable indeed (no idea what the word means). Good to see a true experimentalist on this site. My apologies for leaving no love/comment in the past, I have been etc....

Max/MSP &mdash 04/20/08 - 06:43:07 PM
never heard of this program before, but it looks like it has some similar programming features to Logic. After seeing the price tag for Max/MSP, I don't know if I'm in the right market at this point to take it on.

I've never gone so far with Logic to start programming my own synths. It's a daunting and intriguing idea though.

No need to apologize for anything. There's too much music on this site to listen to it all.

more stuff to make you scratch your head &mdash 04/28/08 - 09:06:52 PM
you have a unique musical vision, that is for sure. Everything that you post is so different from one another and it is always worthwhile to stop by for a listen. Not sure I would listen to this over and over, but the execution here is truly interesting.

Head-scratcher &mdash 04/29/08 - 11:25:01 AM
Mason, I don't blame you. This piece requires a certain state of mind to take it in the right light, I think. Moreover, all atonal music is just flat out peculiar to the human ear it seems.

Thanks for putting in the work to get through all 7 minutes of this one.

Cheers,
-greg

no problem in stopping by and listening greg... you know that I'm always interested in uncommon time signatures. I've never worked in 15/4, that's for sure, but it is fun to hear it in action. I'm going to try to take another listen tonight and see if I can latch on to something in this, the hardest part for me is the lack of an underlying theme IMO. Definitely needs to be heard again.

I really love using LiveCut. I wonder what other AU's you are using here. Great concept. I really enjoy listening to these kinds of experiments.
