Description:
A post-triphop-ballad
A collaboration with my Australian friend Daniel Lambert, who is a fantastic producer of electronic music. I'm very happy about the chance to collaborate with him.
Instrumental music and mix: Daniel Lambert
Vocal music: dirigent
Lyrics:
Taken from an old French poem by J. du Bellay (16th century):
La nuit froide et sombre
Couvrant d'obscure ombre
La terre et les cieux,
Aussi doux que miel,
Fait couler du ciel
Le sommeil aux yeux;
Puis le jour suivant,
Au labeur duisant,
Sa lueur expose,
Et d'un tein divers
Ce grand univers
Tapisse et compose.
Which means:
The cold and sombre night
that covers with murky shadow
both earth and heaven,
as sweet as honey,
brings flowing from the sky
sleep unto our eyes.
Then the day that follows,
encouraging toil,
spreads out its bright light,
and with divers hues
covers and settles
this great universe.

I know these lyrics from a 4-part madrigal by the famous Renaissance-composer Orlando di Lasso. He arranged this poem of J. du Bellay, too. But I didn't use Lasso's melody here. just Bellay's text. [ Reply to This ]
Awesome reinterpretation &mdash 04/19/08 - 04:35:18 PM
It's neat to see how timeless poetry and music continues to be. The production and vocals fit so well together in this piece. Nice work, both of you.

Incredible. Andreas: Your French is succulent and surreal. The surroundsoundbed is like bats and fingernails probing tightly stretched flesh-leather walls. This is quite an expedition into new headspace. Brilliant and trippy. [ Reply to This ]
wow &mdash 04/19/08 - 09:39:13 PM
this is really nice. as soon as i finish telling you how much i like it, i'm going to take my computer and throw it in the trash. really wild stuff. i'm in awe of the production, and it's a actual song too (not just a bunch of neat sounds). excellent. [ Reply to This ]
Very odd, very wonderful &mdash 04/19/08 - 11:03:18 PM
I pretty much have no idea what's going on here, and I really like it a lot. Your Australian friend is a great talent - the instrumental track is amazing and beautifully created. Your voice is, of course, one of the wonders of MacJams.
This is a work of art, and it's going on my iPod, like so much of your music. Very, very well done Andreas. [ Reply to This ]
Great composition &mdash 04/20/08 - 01:44:28 AM
I like the voice treatments - and how everything works compositionally. Can't wait to hear more. [ Reply to This ]
Not sure if I'm &mdash 04/20/08 - 05:32:05 AM
smart enough to understand this but I certainly do like it. Dirigent you are such a huge talent and I'm really happy to see you are collaborating. What a neat sound bed your friend created here.......and as you know I think your vocal work is always at least superb! [ Reply to This ]

I loved it. The production is second to none and the words still make sense after 500 years.
The power of music and the word never ceases to amaze me.
Very well done guys :-)

Great production .. &mdash 04/28/08 - 02:26:26 AM
.. as always. I love the way you move outside the box in your music - very avant-garde. Daniel's music bed is superb and perfect for your voice. I'd probably like your vocal a little bigger in the mix, but a very minor nit.
Excellent!
