Description:
Inspired by Heightened's Mars pieces (Love them, thank you!) at last I opened up Garageband tonight to make a new song...

Also, last night I found a folder on my Mac "To Use". A dozen of FX clips obviously collected for future use (and no way of telling where they came from originally, I can just hope they were free to use...) Well I did and here is the result after an odd hour or so of having some mixing fun. It's not really music, as my daughter kindly remarked, but reused sound effects mixed to a kind of story. Can you see that story? What comes to your mind?

A bit of warning for not turning up the volume too much in the beginning - it gains strength all the way towards the end... Hope you enjoy!

Hardware:
My trusty ol' PM G5!

Software:
Garageband 4

is incredible. makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. perfect for a soundtrrack. you gotta check out the soundtrack for "there will be blood." i love this, wish it had gone on for about 4x as long though.

Thank you Michael &mdash 04/20/08 - 01:33:17 PM
for this incredible comment!

I am not sure how much compliment I can take for this one. It's "just" a dozen fx sound files put together. Most of the eerieness(?) is made up of two longer sounds called Foreboding and Suspense more or less running alongside each other with the occasional extra fx to make up "the story". I also wanted to do a song that built on dynamic volume, so it starts rather silent and end a bit "violently". (I need to learn and test some more before I can do a longer one with that idea in mind.)

Haven't seen "There will be blood", but it seems interesting and maybe I'll try it in the video store some day (we haven't got movies in iTunes in Sweden yet, you know :-/ )

Anyway. Thanks!!

hehehe... &mdash 04/19/08 - 11:19:53 PM
Well, it started out extremely eerie and anticipatory... the sound effects seemed perfectly placed through the whole piece. The only thing that I thought was that the first half of this was very professional sounding... but as the sound effects got added nearer the end, it changed into being more comical. I definitely followed a mental story of somebody sneaking up to a house, breaking a window and leaving on horseback. I wanted this to remain restrained and sparse... it was really seriously good there in the beginning I thought. But then it got good and silly... which isn't always a bad thing.
ttfn,
Drakonis

You nailed it &mdash 04/20/08 - 01:51:57 PM
as usual, ye old dragon! Guess how many times I thought I should drop the villain altogether and make a "serious" piece out of this?

(Answer: at least two :-)

Still, I had this folder that I found named "To use" and I thought it must have been there for some reason. When soon it showed they made up this little soundtrack piece I let it be.

Another "idea" behind this is a definition of "humour". Hm, I'm afraid I don't know how to say that in English... So, in Swedish: En spänd förväntans upplösning i intet. (Alright I'll try: An eager expectation dissolved into nothing.) I think it fits quite well for this one :-)

Hope all is well with you and family!

have you &mdash 05/01/08 - 05:17:39 PM
ever tried to make an ambient piece in this vein?
Or at least expand this one?
No matter. This is great: entrancing, menacing and what a cool ending!

for listening and commenting. Glad you liked this little piece.

Actually I've got a few ambient pieces further down the list. This was just a quicky in wait for the big inspiration (I can feel it coming in the air now, much thanks to Heightened).

Take care.

Oooohhhh those devils and trolls in my neighborhood will regret the day they kicked my jack-o-lantern over! I'm gonna run big speakers outside and frighten the neighborhood with this!!

So, is that alright with you?

Yeah, why not! I am all for recycling. Use what you need to scare 'em off lol !

Well I guess you've noticed my listening to "Closer" of late. I still can't (and don't want to) get it out of my head. All the ingredients make it come alive in a most personal and profound way. So thanks a lot for your (big) part in this!
