Description:
An Emo-Folk song.
This is just so sad.
Lyrics:
A UFO Took Mary Lou Away
me and Mary Lou
were at the village fair
the night the shiny thing
came soaring through the air
we held each other tight
as it melted seven trucks
i knew right then and there
we were out of luck
a mighty beam of light
took Mary Lou away
she floated out of sight
my wife-to-be-someday
now what was i to do
my mind was going blank
a spaceship took my Mary Lou away
the crowd was very still
my daddy came to me
he said come on let's get back home
there's nothing else to see
i looked into the sky
but there were only stars
my mother took my hand
she said to be a man
but i had never planned
for a UFO took Mary Lou away
every chance i get
i go to Maxwell's field
i survey every star
the Milky Way revealed
i see her face in wisps
of interstellar clouds
her eyes are flashing
through the midnight shroud
a mighty beam of light
took Mary Lou away
she floated out of sight
my wife-to-be-someday
it's all that i can do
to wait for her return
a spaceship took my Mary Lou away
many years have gone
my parents passed away
the village grew into a town
my friends all went away
i never had a family
i only had a dream
i waited in the dark
my failing broken heart
i never got a fair start
for a UFO took Mary Lou away
(c) whenever whoever whatever

its almost as if every word just spilled from your mouth. Upon further listening I knew this not to be true but I still must believe. I love the cohesion the glue and the bounce its a folk song without limits and then written in a time of anti folkism loved it thanks for it made me babble! [ Reply to This ]

You're either one of my favorite strange people &mdash 04/21/08 - 09:37:47 PM
or strangest favorite people - or both. Either way - you're a true original - just like this woeful tale of alien abduction. Loved it. [ Reply to This ]

Now this has to be THE lost "They Might Be Giants" song. And there are UFO nests in Montana. [ Reply to This ]

I always wondered... &mdash 04/21/08 - 10:11:27 PM
what happened to Mary Lou. What an unfortunate turn of events! The story (not the music) reminds me a bit of Blue Oyster Cult's "A Fire of Unknown Origin". I love the music (funny that you and I would post something that has a similar "Spanish" feel to it on the same day!) And the story-telling lyrics kept me riveted to the end. So sorry to have your dream snatched by aliens!

This tragic tale made for a very engaging listen.
Thanks for posting it! [ Reply to This ]
Oh, really sad &mdash 04/22/08 - 02:41:39 AM
We are so sad for you. That must have been terrible. Really sad.
On the other hand you made a really nice and fun song instead.
But we really hope you get her back some day. [ Reply to This ]

Plenty more fish in the sea though.
I'd forget about her if I were you. She was having an affair with your best mate anyway.
Great song, made me smile.
Cheers

Other-worldly &mdash 04/22/08 - 08:06:52 AM
Wow! This is a real heartbreaker! I applaud your courage in writing about what must have been a very traumatic event.
Is that an auto-harp? A bouzouki? A strange, other-worldly string instrument? Cool! [ Reply to This ]

I wrote this song many years ago. Recently I found a copy of my original recording on a cassette tape. I had used an acoustic guitar and auto-harp on that.
For this remake, I emulated the auto-harp by using the hammered dulcimer synth and pencil-tooled the notes to get that sweeping strumming effect.
The original was 3 half-steps higher. I had to drop it, since I simply cannot sing in that range today. [ Reply to This ]
i'm a martian too &mdash 04/22/08 - 09:18:05 AM
hahaha i love the lyrics. has an old army sound i can see the army singing this on a march the vocals even give that sort of feel. perhaps a scotish or british army ought to take up this song. thank you. makes a stupid night of work better you got me laughing so cheers to that. [ Reply to This ]

Never ever &mdash 04/22/08 - 03:23:16 PM
know what to expect next from you. Always a surprise and always a great listen. I think you should now write one from the perspective of the aliens. Like 'I want to give her back, but my saucer is broke'.
Cheers

Beautiful... &mdash 04/23/08 - 01:16:30 PM
...and heart-wrenching....yet utterly weird (in a pleasantly quirky sort of way).
Reminds me a little of The Wilburys' "Maxine."
Really nice work Bill.
Be well! [ Reply to This ]

What took my breath here really is the music work and how it's connected and mixed with your vocal. A marvelous piece of work! Thanks a lot for sharing... I'm a big fan of sad music. Here's a sad one from my work:

Has me perplexed for an answer.
Raw emotion, and a song within the words.
Gotta love the ones that make ya think.
