Description:
I had to go to court today to testify against the guy who attacked me last week. Cost $16 to park, and I waited around for hours before they told me that the case has been pushed back a week or so. Awesome; I'll be in Tacoma for work then. While waiting though, i constructed this "Dark Ambient" piece on my laptop with Audacity. Started out on Reaper, but wanted to make music and not read a manual. First time I ever made music in a courthouse.
There are no instruments in this piece (aside from a piano thing i cut apart and re-arranged). It's all just sounds that are processed to death, and I included a snippet of Buds composition "Phenomenon" for a few seconds. It was in my iTunes and gave the "song" a major key feel for a moment.
This is similar to Stars of the Lid and Dead Texan. If you don't like droning wandering sounds, you may not like this. But it's not abrasive at all (very mellow actually).
Hardware:
HP laptop (my work computer), massive amounts of boredom
Software:
Audacity, a bunch of samples I found on the laptop and manipulated, a lot of delay

haha this is so weird... i'm working on one right now that sounds a lot like this. just sat down to add the piano actually. I'll send you a link to the WIP for kicks.
Anyway, I really like what you've done here! Nothing's overdone or contrived and I really like it when everything drops but the piano. Very cool piece. [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful Michael - &mdash 04/22/08 - 06:58:59 AM
the cut off piano notes are genius. I dod hear Phenomenon in there - nice use of the track. Great arc to this piece. [ Reply to This ]

Michael - you just slay me. This is amazing, I'm so glad you posted the story behind it - can't believe you put this together while sitting at the courthouse. This is terrific! Sorry your court date got pushed back - hope they don't drag this on forever. [ Reply to This ]

Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman.
Ludwig van Beethoven
*** This piece does all that and more! [ Reply to This ]
Cool track &mdash 04/22/08 - 09:13:01 AM
Well it sounds like you used your boredom to good use, better then the $16. Well manipulated samples have produced a good piece. Goes to show your creativity with very little. Well done Michael. [ Reply to This ]
right then michael &mdash 04/22/08 - 09:43:19 AM
just a jail house knock off huh??? actually pretty cool ... nice slice, dice and mix work here michael .... hats off bro! [ Reply to This ]
Deliciously depressing... &mdash 04/22/08 - 11:33:37 AM
You've captured something here. Dark ambient it is. Maybe you should go down to the courthouse on a regular basis!? My only complaint is that the length could easily be doubled. Austere, bleak, and an instant mood setter. [ Reply to This ]
Interesting &mdash 04/22/08 - 12:23:11 PM
story, I hope it all works out ok for you. The music kind of narrates that well, very nice listen. [ Reply to This ]
Hi Michael.... &mdash 04/22/08 - 01:03:05 PM
This sort of music is what having a laptop is all about.
It's also another reason for not throwing any snippets of music you've done, away. You never know what you might need at another mixing session.
Great stuff.

Soundtrack worthy, definitely. (Blade Runner-ish)
You did a really nice production job.

'Haunting' &mdash 04/22/08 - 03:19:40 PM
is a word I'd use. I admire your calmness in being able to compose something like this, under the duress of being in a Court Waiting Room. Very atmospheric indeed, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Tuth and Justice . . . &mdash 04/22/08 - 08:42:01 PM
Brother Michael,
I%u2019m curious: which crime is this song a reaction to? The attack, or $16 for parking? Even though I%u2019m a radically left-wing humanist, and an optimist, I think the owner of that parking lot should be dealt with harshly: lethal injection.
Actually, you got off cheap. Interacting with the US judicial system and coming back with a work of art is better justice than most people get.
Good work!

but to tired to log in and say how cool this came about.
now if no instruments where used.. then how in the heck did you create this? what is reaper? and is there anything lurking in my closet?
strangely dark and Judge Judy extreme

Hmmmnnnnn.... &mdash 04/23/08 - 12:10:41 PM
This one had me phase-shifting between alternate dimensions. I hate when that happens. I will have to tether myself to this dimension before I give it a second listen!
Very spooky/spacey Michael!

If this is the product of a massive amount of boredom you should get bored more often.
Very atmospheric and strangely moving.

Oooh I'm a-scared now ..... &mdash 04/25/08 - 11:47:03 PM
... that goodness I am still in the middle of painting my basement and it's all cheery down here now ... cause had I been listening to this a few weeks ago when it was still very dark and gloomy .... I might have had to shave the teeny tiny little hairs off the back of my neck cause they wouldn't go back down .... that little piano in the middle is like the part where the crazy lost museum or theatre ghost makes his appearance .... WOW &mdash 05/02/08 - 01:44:12 PM
gorgeous soundscape to start, but then the way you cut off the ends of the piano lines, makes it a song. it just kills me!
a) I do not know the why or how of your attack, nor do I need to intrude on your life to wish you well, so good thoughts to you!
b) this piece, though it was created from boredom, expresses what I think to be the soundtrack to death row. I think of "Dancer in the Dark" when I hear this piece, which is why those cut piano lines chill me all the way through. [ Reply to This ]
