Description:
Shortly after I purchased my G Force M-Tron software, I decided to jump in with both feet and compose a Mellotron-based piece. I know of no better way to get acquainted with new equipment.

I’m unsure what genre to list this under. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Anyway, this one is about the peace that follows heart-surrender to the Divine will.

Enjoy!

BTW: Although I’ve got a few pieces in development, it may be a several weeks before I post again. I just haven’t been able to find the blocks of time I need to work on them. I’m taking a vacation during the first week of May. Perhaps then...

know what that G Force M-Tron thing is, but it sounds pretty good to me. I don't know about getting acquainted with it.... I think your missus might have something to say about this relationship LOL. It sounds really great..... kind of Cinematic as if I've been swapping dimensions. Sounds like the soundtrack to one of those Fantasy movies, Cheers M

Hi Maurice... &mdash 04/23/08 - 03:13:23 PM
The G Force M-Tron is a software based upon samples from classic Mellotrons. It samples many sounds actually used by bands like Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Roxy Music, the Moody Blues, the Beatles and othes. I just love it. Best of all, it's pretty inexpensive.

I really enjoyed composing and recording this one (both done almost simultaneously). It was done over a period of three days back in February.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I knew what Mellotron was but didn't know about m-tron... Wow... that looks like a lot of work to simulate that old device but ya they were cool sounding!

I've never seen a real Mellotron before. Would be interesting to take one apart.

Your first piece seems like you mastered it already! Very nice!

Thank you Mark... &mdash 04/23/08 - 03:16:49 PM
Yes, it's same damn nice software. I haven't always been able to get the sounds I wanted from the GB abd LE7 array of synths, so when i saw this MTron software I had to jump on it.

Hah! I doubt very seriously that I have ever mastered anything! But thanks for the kind word of encouragement.

well, the song certainly has a lustrous quality about it, and it's a product of fine talent. perhaps it was the influence of the bright picture, but i still maintain that "brilliant" is not used inappropriately here. :)

Thanks for the genre suggestion. I went ahead and changed it from "other" to "Art Rock."

The hard part was to not overdo the lead guitar parts, and to strike a balance between all the instruments. The goal was to simply play around a simple and melodic theme.

Glad you enjoyed it.

lots &mdash 04/23/08 - 02:26:53 PM
Lots of moods here being sorted out, almost psychedelic in a way where one thought gets threaded out into another.

Many parts in it reminded me as mentioned before some old science fiction movies but most often reminded me of some of those Spahgetti westerns by Sergio Leone ala' Clint Eastwood. Lots of sudden camera shots focusing on either scenery or flitting back between desparados eyes.

Great mood music a hodgepodge of fun for sure. You really must of enjoyed playing with your new software.

[ Reply to This ]
Hi Damien... &mdash 04/23/08 - 03:34:24 PM
Well, I gotta say....I find your "spagetti western" comparison fascinating and entertaining! Now whenever I listen to this I will see Clint Eastwood riding into the sunset! Ha ha...

RE "psychedelic": Not intentional. I guess my LSD-saturated past still lurks in my sub-conscious....

"Hodgepodge" I do not understand at all. Sorry....

Be well my friend!

Hodgepodge in a good way.

Function:
noun
Etymology:
alteration of hotchpotch
Date:
15th century

: a heterogeneous mixture : jumble <a hodgepodge of styles>

I meant as a collection of a lot of good ideas mixed together with a wonderful outcome.

You have listed my absolute favorite Genesis album! But the influence is subconscious, as I haven't listened to it for some time.

My musical tastes are very eclectic, and it's been a couple years since I posted anything quite like this. I thought it would be a pleasant departure from the racket I usually make. Ha ha...

Yeah, time can certainly be our Achilles' Heel. I actually have four pieces in development, and would like to completely re-do a couple of my older ones. It's just damn near impossible to get to it all, PLUS keep up with all the good stuff being posted by other MJers!

I really enjoyed this one allot. I dont know why but it seems as if you have reached a whole new plateau. I like how it breaks and the drums come in again . the end is also cool with the roll that leads into the opening theme. Excellent!

Yeah, it took some doing to arrive at this final mix. I appreciate your listening to and critiquing this at an earlier stage in the process. Sadly, I accidently lost the original files when trying to burn them onto DVD. I was fortunate to have made an aiff of this mix just before it happened!

Boy Michael, this is amazing! I'm clueless about "mellotrons" and "G-Force M-Trons" also, but I'm NOT clueless about how excellent this is. A fabulous listen, interesting, complex and yes - brilliant!

[ Reply to This ]
Hi Karen! &mdash 04/24/08 - 11:37:10 AM
Mellotrons were widely used in the late 60's and in the 70's before the coming of synthed samples. They looked like organs. When you pressed a key, a tape head would engage a pre-recorded tape-loop. Bands like the Beatles, the Moody Blues, Yes, King Crimson and Genesis used Mellotrons. The G Force M Tron is a software that is based on samples from actual mellotrons; including some old samples created by actual bands from the period. I love that old mellotron sound, and when I saw that the hardware had been vreated I justy had to get it! The G Force M Tron is fairly INexpensive.

Thanks you for the kind words re this composition. It was only an experiment. It grew from my just fooling around with the new software. Once I stumbled (as I usually do! Ha ha...) onto the main theme, I realised I had something I could add the standard guitar, bass, and drums to, and VOILA---a tune was born. It took me three days to get it all recorded. The mixing process took a few more I think...(This was back in February).

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

Many thanks for the nice review. I'm glad it made you feel a bit better.

Although it originally grew out of my own inner struggles---henceforth, whenever I listen to it, I won't be able to help thinking about our fallen MJ brother Paul Davies.

The older we get, the more people we lose; until, at last, those who remain lose us. But thanks to the grace of God, the loss need not be everlasting.

Yeah, mellotrons belong to the age of the dinosaurs. As King Crimson recently sang: "I'm a dinosaur...Somebody's diggin' my bones!"

Hi Len! &mdash 04/24/08 - 01:26:57 PM
I'd known about MTron for some time; but like everything else I want...it goes on the "list" and waits it's turn. I finally was able to spring for one in February.

Although it's a tad trickier to use than the GB and LE7 synths---mainly due to timing issues---I love it. And it DOES explain some of the sounds I've heard in your tunes!

Glad you enjoyed this one Len. Because it's rather different from the type of thing I usually do, I was a little apprehensive about posting it. I actually recorded it right AFTER "Janus Faced" and BEFORE "Caffeine" and "Sense of Direction." So I've sat on it since February. But a number of lovely soundscapes have been posted recently, and I thought one more can't hurt!

Don't feel bad Rox...Even I have no idea how I did this! lol!

All of my stuff---whether guitar based or keyboard based---arises from moments when I'm "in the zone" and noodling on one or the other instrument. If I stumble on something that sounds/feels interesting, I just run with it and follow wherever it leads. I have never yet sat down and said to myself: "I will now write a blues tune!"---or any other genre. At least, that's the case with my original stuff. Of course, that doesn't apply to covers...

Glad you enjoyed this sis!
