Keywords:
piano (602)classical (372)modern (10)composition (10)gregd (23)modes (1)modal (5)a casual student's experiment (1)
Description:
I know this is isn't what I usually put up here, but I can explain. This piece is an attempt to practice what I've been reading and listening to lately.

I've been steadily reading through all the books on twentieth century composition that my local library has. Since I change majors before I could complete my university's music theory courses, I've been curious about what happened to music theory after people discovered "tall" tertian chords and key changes.

Consequently, I've been listening to Composer Clark's and The Composer's pieces here, and they've inspired me to try and keep my music more on the tonal side of sound.

Which brings me to the point: here's a collection of short piano compositions, a theme and variations. Each piece is composed using two different modes simultaneously, one for each hand--except for two of the middle sections, which are pan-tonal. If you'd like to see the midi file for a "score", I'd be happy to oblige.

Enjoy,
-greg

Great to hear this other side of your talent &mdash 04/23/08 - 08:17:16 PM
I always expected there was some deeper intelligence at work in your experimental and rock pieces and now I understand. I really enjoyed these studies - very interesting, entertaining and thought provoking. Please continue to broaden your output - this is cool.

Thanks for the support Bud. It's much appreciated. I'll see what I can do to take up more musical space.

Good? &mdash 04/24/08 - 10:40:11 AM
There were those "college daze" I remember when mind-bending could either be a truly remarkable event, or something that you wish you'd rather not eaten . . . . Hopefully, this was palatable.

Thanks for listening!

Interesting &mdash 04/24/08 - 02:54:11 PM
Some very intentional sounds here. Your work is leading you in some very diverse directions. The key changes add color and vary the mood keeping the piece interesting. Good Stuff.

Thanks

McDonalds on a hot day &mdash 04/24/08 - 03:15:13 PM
Bill, I think of creativity as a spot of grease that just keeps spreading under the heat of the sun across the wrapping paper of your burger. If you have enough grease and the day is bright enough, you just might saturate the whole wrapper. Fortunately, creativity and music have fewer calories than McDonalds.

Thanks for stopping by,

you know &mdash 04/24/08 - 04:23:56 PM
it is a little different than your usual stuff, but not much. mostly because it's on a piano. i didn't realize that you were a real musician (theory and all that). that makes what you do extra cool, in that "learn all the rules so you can break them" kind of way. i think guess what I'm trying to say is i think this is really amazing and i think it fits in with your body of work nicely.

Real musician . . . &mdash 04/24/08 - 04:42:21 PM
whoa, be careful :p I ought to just say, "Thanks." I don't usually think of myself that way.

I think you're right; this isn't so far out of "the usual" for me, but it is a very different approach to experimentation and making music than I usually take.

Thanks for checking this one out, Michael.

Thanks for stopping by. I actually had to go back and analyze what I'd done in this tune to figure out if there was a whole tone scale. It's right there at the beginning; you got a good pair of ears strapped to your head.

Thanks again,
-greg

A very interesting experiment &mdash 04/28/08 - 09:12:28 PM
A very interesting experiment. It sounds both in and out of tune at the same time, giving it a wonderfully chaotic and sometimes bipolar feel. Definitely have to listen to this some more.

Mason, thanks for stopping by and dropping a note.

The notes for the left-hand, melody mode include 10 of the twelve chromatic tones. When I laid that over the whole-tone harmony/bass scale--which only has a major third and minor sixth, things start sounding ambiguous.

Thanks again,
-g
