Description
I originally wrote this for the CBGB challenge, but I decided on something darker. So you guys get to hear this now. It's kind of a cross between The Ramones and The New York Dolls. They were both huge influences when I was a kid, I played in a million bands like this since like age 15. I had so much fun doing these songs, i may start another page of this kind of music exclusively. Probably took me about an hour to do this, including the writing. It's easy when you're all stripped down and working from cliches.

Production values were ragged as hell back then, so I recorded this as fast as humanly possible. First take on everything, all the meters in the red; suitably juvenile teen angst lyrics. 140 bpm of pure punk pop bliss.

Lyrics
(chorus)
Debby, do you want to go out tonight
do you wanna go dancing
won't you be my girl
Debby, do you wanna be my girlfriend
i said i wanna be your boyfriend
won't you be my girl

(verse)
when i see her on the street
my heart starts jumping and it skips a beat
when we go out with our friends
i hope the night will never end

(chorus)
Debby, do you want to go out tonight
do you wanna go dancing
won't you be my girl
Debby, do you wanna be my girlfriend
i wanna be your boyfriend
won't you be my girl

(solo)

(verse)
when i see her on the street
my heart starts jumping and it skips a beat
when we go out with our friends
i hope the night will never end

(chorus)
Debby, do you want to go out tonight
do you wanna go dancing
won't you be my girl
Debby, do you wanna be my girlfriend
i said i wanna be your boyfriend
won't you be my girl
won't you be my girl
won't you be my girl
won't you be my girl

raw and punk pop. a big NY Dolls connection especially in the music and guitars. the lyrics has the ramones thing. crazy, and stands tall in those 8" platform shoes!

hey Vic
thanks for listening (and getting it). i really worshipped at the altar of the dolls for years. thought they made the Stones look like posers. you gotta search for them on youtube, some good grainy footage from Bimbo's in San Francisco. thanks for listening, i gotta sit down now, these heels are killing me.

oh yeah
kind of does sound like that. i went with Debby cuz it's such a 60's sounding name and the Ramones would have used it. Started out as Sandy, but I work with a girl named Sandy so I changed it at the last minute. I just like the name. thanks for listening.

No Wonder..
No wonder you write so many great songs. You have the unique ability to pick and chose who and what you want to sound like. Unbelievable. Johnny Thunder's riffs Ramones lyrics =another M2 original!

I love it!

The Ramones live on! This is fabulous Michael. I can barely grok that you did it in an hour - you're just amazing! Thanks for the fun ride.

like i said 1st take for everything. the songs 2 minutes long and hardly any instruments, so it kind of flew by, and there's only 3 drum loops in it (that were already in my favorites). so glad you like.

This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy
actually got goose bumps. Whamma lamma dingdong. Now you got me laughing - just too much. David's daughter used to be in school with Stella - and last year at a fund raiser talent show in the auditorium the Dolls came out and tore the house down on practice amps and a crappy PA. Michael this is a real joy.

it's pretty much a Buddy Holly song with a bunch of slop tossed over the top for that period feel. so glad you liked (begrudgingly).

thanks
everything was fast and I left in every mistake, so it took about a half an hour to track (did it while waiting for a conference call to start), and about a half an hour to pick the drum loops. the chords are in a 1000 songs already so I just faked a melody and some simple lyrics over the top. thanks for listening, I can't wait to hear everyones CBGB entries.

hah
good work. love the sloppy drums and the whistle before the solo. you've done well capturing the genre for sure. there's a certain type of art we call 'goodbad' at work. Really sloppy lazy drawings but in a good way. When you look at them you can tell they're done buy a great artist. Well I would call this song 'goodbad' as well. That's a compliment by the way lol.

Anyway, I definitely like this a lot, but I'm really looking forward to hearing the 'darker' one from you for the challenge.

What a fun song Michael. You are so creative and I love listening to your songs. As always, I enjoy your singing and for some odd reason...I suddenly had the urge to change my name to Debby! :) Great job Michael. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Cool track Michael
Has a lot going for it, great vocals, driving rhythm, and the guitars pushing it along. Reminds me of some of the 60's songs, but it's also heavier.

Great song Michael, thanks for sharing

A little structured musical free-for-all is a GOOD thing. This a straight-ahead rocking tune. Rock On. ;)

Be well!

Blondie blondie blondie. Dig dug digged it. Multi-talented man, you! I truly think no person here at MJ's is able to cross genres so authentic and with so much confidence, like you do. Good production, blondie blondie blondie....I love blond Debby, she is so wild and dangerous.

this is the tune your passing on for the CBGB challenge, then damn, hehe! This is a super great track, man! I'll also be looking out for the one you do post for CBGB.

When I was in NYC
my roommate turned me on to the Dolls and Ramones circa 1985, and I had the chance to hang around CBGBs in "the day" right when I turned 21. This brings tons of good memories back.

Great track
You hit the nail on the head when you say the Dolls make the Stones look like posers. Though you made nods to Buddy with the chords and melody, one of the hardest things to do is put together a 3 chord song that really stands out. You've done that here. Great tune!
