Description:
This is a song about many things, but primarily the message is one
of love and loss, a theme not uncommon in my music. The imagery I tried to
imply is personal to me, but might resonate with many. Who knows?

This is my first collaboration effort. I wrote this long ago, and could always
hear Miss Slumbering's voice with it. I was delighted when she agreed to
perform, but was completely taken back upon hearing the final mix.
I couldn't have imagined it any better than this.

I'm so fortunate to have such a wonderful spirit and amazing talent to work with.
Thank you, over and over, Slumbering.

Also, a thank you is directed to Steve Jay for telling me there are no excuses.
Your call-out pushed me toward the mic. Thanks!

I hope you enjoy the song. Peace.

Lyrics:
A Band-Mate of Years

Save me from saving somebody else.
Save me cuz I won't save myself.
Hold me like you held someone else.
Save me cuz you can't save yourself.

Break me like a drunk with a belt.
Enslave me in your exquisite cell.

Everything is so different now that you're not here.
I traded my salt for a band-mate of years.
Now, I can't see you through the snow.
I guess this is what they call letting go.

Replace me take me right off the shelf.
Erase me and claim it all for yourself.
Want me like you want someone else.
Shove me in your bottomless well.

Everything is so different now that you're not here.
I traded my salt for a band-mate of years.
Now, I can't see you through the snow.
I guess this is what they call letting go.

< wicked solo >

Everything is so different now that you're not here.
I traded my salt for a band-mate of years.
Now, I can't see you through the snow.
I guess this is what they call letting go.

Deface me and then blame someone else.
Deceive me cuz you know I just can't tell.
Love me like you're loving yourself.
Want me because I don't want myself.

Everything is so different now that you're not here.
I traded my salt for a band-mate of years.
Now, I am wandering through the snow.
I'm having a hard time letting go.

Very very cool &mdash 04/26/08 - 09:23:14 PM
This is a great song. The lyrics are wonderful - powerful and evocative. They do indeed resonate, and the personal becomes universal - the sign of a great song in my book. The guitar sounds great, and add two terrific vocal performances and you have a magnificent track. Very cool. It's great to hear some new music from you, Mark. Nice work to both of you. Kudos. Peace.

what a great pair! I can see why you envisioned Miss Slumbering's gorgeous vocals on this. This could fit quite nicely on the Garden State Soundtrack. I love it. Special kudos to your live tamborine and stapler. Is it a Swingline? :-)

I appreciate those words so much! Thank you!

And no, it's a Boston™ Stapler... what else would I use?

Best wishes!!

Gritty real, and sooo listenable &mdash 04/26/08 - 10:19:47 PM
Funny, at first your little bends on the guitar sounded quirky, and then very quickly I expected them and WANTED them to be there, so that worked. Then of course, no offense to your very nice singing, and great lyrics (I'll get back to them) but SLUMBERING!? I was excited to hear that she was going to be singing in this, and I was anticipating her entrance, and sort of missed the first stanza of lyrics. So I have gone back to listen again, now that I got my fix. You two did wonderfully on this. I love your slow tweaks on the chorus lyrics, and the music is one of those "sounds-happy-through gritted-teeth" type songs, very well done. Your lyrics do resonate here. And your voice is solid and very personal-sounding, driving home the message. Slumbering's harmonies are delicious, soft, and fit so nicely here. At the end, when you were singing the last line over and over, I was LOVING the melody/harmony, and really liked the slow changes on each repeat, and I admit, I was having a hard time letting go, I just wanted it to keep going. Really really nice work, both of you.

Drakonis

This is a wonderful collaboration. I really love the way your voices contrast so well, and yet blend wonderfully, too!

Poignant words and sung with a lot of feeling.

Welcome back .. &mdash 04/27/08 - 04:27:04 AM
.. to you both. Always enjoyed BTB posts, and am a huuge fan of Miss S. Lovely song, great vocals and very nicely recorded guitars (oh, and of course, the tambourine!).

A suggestion: maybe if you didn't bang the tambourine on the stapler the nails wouldn't come out :)

Good post!

i like your vocals on this it sort of has a dark quality. i think i can rather relate to some of the lyrics. nice song. really like the lyrics.

Thank you, screamalexz! I have to agree that there is a dark side to the piece. the words have different meanings than they might appear. like, "salt" being "sweat, tears, etc." and "snow" not being fluffy white, but more like visual static or noise.

you've got a keen perception to note that, which makes me appreciate your comment even more. thanks for checking this one out!

Thanks so much for the comment. One thing I've tried to do on the past several songs I've recorded is to keep everything very real (limited software instruments) and keep things very simple - something I've always had a hard time not doing!

So, for you to mention it sounds honest resonates with me - thank you!

I love Iron & Wine! Perhaps you are familiar with the simplistic approach which is something i've been working on for some time now - trying to record without overcomplicating and making the minimal events seem gala.

thank you for your comment - your time means so much to me!

Love the folkiness .. &mdash 04/27/08 - 03:15:18 PM

.. lovely singing from you both .. your voices do really work together. I like the 'bare/rawness' of the production .. simple .. and effective ..excellent thoughtful and thought provoking lyrics.

Tune itself reminded me a little of George McCrae's "rock your baby" (of all things) .. probably just me .. so pay no heed.

"Hey Mr.Snargly Cableman .. sing a song for me" .. nah, just thought I'd see if it worked .. ;o)

Welcome back Boris!

I've been reading the comments and was really surprised about the kind things people have said about my very small contribution to this wonderful song.

When i first heard the original that Boris sent me, i knew it was a gem and felt honored that he thought of me. I thought that it didn't need anything else, it was ready to go and beautiful as it was. Somehow he managed to make it even better.

I am very grateful to be part of this song and very flattered and humbled by the sweet things people have said about me. Thank you all so much.
