Description:
This is a cover of a piece first recorded in 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. This recording was made by a band I play piano with, - a five piece version of the Cardiff band Midnight Special. It was recorded on 5th February 1998 and is one of many impromtu recordings I made with my old reel to reel. It is absolutely live with no mixing whatsoever, just a touch of EQing in places. It was recorded at the Cannal Boat in North Road, Cardiff.

Oh I know how you feel about Brian- &mdash 04/28/08 - 04:10:20 AM
in fact I think you've got a thing about the Brians of this world!- yes I saw you talking to that new boy drummer last Thursday. His name's Brian isn't it as well. You even made a record about his teeth.- Brian's Teeth indeed ,--

Thanks for listening,

John.

One of these &mdash 04/27/08 - 12:16:05 PM
days John - I'm gonna jump in my car and drive to Cardiff just to see you and your band play live. I bet your audiences really have fun. (Mind you the audience at the end of this sound half dead - right miserable bunch!)
This sounds wonderful - you are a truly gifted pianist and the rest of the band sound great too.
What's Welsh Wales beer like? See you there.
Cheers
Len

Thanks Len &mdash 04/28/08 - 04:14:40 AM
Yes you'd like the Welsh beer I think. Brains is very popular- they do one called Brain's SA which has been nicknamed skull attack.

Glad you liked it, it's just a fun band really.

- I said that there is a beer here called Brains SA which has been nicknamed Skull Attack if you ever come to Wales you'll have to try it out.

Glad you liked the music, Midnight Special are mainly a fun band, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!

Thanks for youe comments,

Midnight Special &mdash 04/28/08 - 12:29:32 AM
It's a little after midnight here in Jiffytown and we got something special in this wonderful piece.

Thanks for posting these songs, John. Truly a gift. I hope the Welshmen and women realize how good they got it.

thank you very much &mdash 04/28/08 - 09:12:23 AM
for your comments - I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did try and DI wherever I could when I recorded it but it was very much a hit or miss situation as there was never much of a soundcheck in these situations.

Beautiful live! &mdash 04/28/08 - 09:09:11 AM
This is the kind of stuff that can ONLY come live! ONLY LIVE! It takes the minute human timing errors and improvs to make a truly dynamic piece!

Impressive work John! You guys rock totally!

thank you Mark- &mdash 04/28/08 - 09:16:33 AM
I have played on and off for about seventeen years with this little line up and to be honest I find it a refreshing break from rock music which I seem to have spent most of my life playing.

Thhanks again,

John

Great jam &mdash 05/23/08 - 09:06:40 AM
This sounds like big fun, and quite authentic apart from that bass which is clearly electric.

actually a stick bass was used &mdash 05/23/08 - 11:05:06 AM
on this recording, which I would have thought was nearer to an accoustic than an electric but I will have to bow to your superior knowledge here as I am not an expert on this. However it did have a clip on pick up which we did di into a small mixer

John.

Chapman stick? &mdash 05/23/08 - 01:11:11 PM
I wasn't quite sure about the bass. It sounded a bit like an electric upright.

Do you mean stick as in Chapman stick?

[ Reply to This ]
you know I really don't know, &mdash 05/23/08 - 02:12:22 PM
This instrument was frettless and just like a double bass without a body and was similar to the sort of instrument I have often seen Sting playing. I was told it was a stick bass. It was built by the bass player himself who is also a violin maker.
