Description:
This song was recorded in 1996 on analog 1" tape by Brian Doser at My Other Hat Studios in Lynn, MA and mastered by Jonathan Wyner at MWorks in Cambridge, MA, released on my CD, "Toots' Rambles". I play acoustic guitar and Kris Delmhorst plays cello and we sing together live. I just converted this to mp3 in iTunes.
Kris is really super and has a new CD out now, Shotgun Singer, on Signature Sounds. since we played together she's gone onto much acclaim, and I saw her the other day and I thought I'd post this up here today to put in a little plug for her, since she's a dear friend, a great person, and hyper-talented to boot. Viewers of ABC's "Brothers and Sisters" can hear Kris during this week's show, as KD's "Blue Adeline" will show up somewhere in the soundtrack. The show airs today, Sunday, 4/27 at 10:00pm EST.

Lyrics:
Ice forms on the pools of darkas night pours through every crack
in the fabric of this fraying heart
growing more helpless and inadequate
no matter how deep the yearning
no one dares make contact
Like vapor trails in the sky fading
into the endless night no they won't be back
And I've been down to the baggage claim
The carousel turning round and round
Looking for a label that bears the right name
But what been lost must never be found
in all this sadness all around
In the lonely light before before dawn
The world casts its judgement
down like a pair of dice rolling of the sweaty palm
of a gambler lost in the moment
Ice forms on the rim of the future
as the winter grows colder for this generation
where the bomb was the only thing that was sure
and love was the only thing impossible to mention
And I've been down to the baggage claim
The carousel turning round and round
Looking for a label that bears the right name
But what been lost must never be found
in all this sadness all around

Excellent song writing and love the cello too. To my mind and ear every thing works on this one. Enjoyed a lot. Regards

the quality that shines through here for me is seasoning... the kind of work that you can only arrive at by putting in the milage... there is an underlying sadness that doesn't completely loose hope... but I couldn't understand the whole lyric (old ears).... the cello works so well with your guitar work...
loved it

love the sensitive guitar work, and very nicely woven melody/harmony of your two sung voices... "saaadness" was really a strong point in the song.

What can I say Jim?
I just does not get better than this. such a wonderful piece of music. the cello - is that real? wow! - sounds fantastic. i think i told you it's my favorite instrument. would love to learn it.

I've been much too busy at the moment to spend much time here, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate your comments. Thanks a lot. I hope you will check out and even buy Kris' CD, since as I said, she's really great (and since she's a working musician, it's really the only source of income for her). She made the song much better than it would have been without her additions. Kris plays a real cello, and on this song I think there are two tracks of it, to create a little harmony.

can't go wrong with cello. Kris is great! a great duet.

your voice and Kris', your guitar and her cello. An excellent track Jim, congrats to both of you for a job really done well.
I'm a little deaf so I couldn't understand the lyrics to well, and would have love it if you could have posted them too, but it doesn't take anything away from the obvious quality of the song and the production. Excellent playing and vocals on both your parts my friend.
Thanks for sharing this one Jim

sorry about that, but I wrote this on a scrap of paper before (which is long gone) and I needed to listen a bit more closely to get them right while transcribing this to the computer. Too old to trust my memory, I'm afraid!
I think the airport imagery comes from just having taken a plane to Augusta, GA, where I wrote this, but I think it's a good metaphor for an element of the coldness of this modern life, which is what this song is about, the fashionability of tragedy.
Thanks for the compliment!

Nice treat on a quiet Friday night! I'm going back for more!
