Description:
I’ve begun laying down tracks of newer material I’ve been accumulating during the past couple of years. This acoustic number emerged as I was rehabbing from a severe pinched nerve. I chose to work on acoustic, rather than electric guitar during that time, figuring the added difficulty would do me good. That approach seems to have worked out pretty well for me and I’ve recovered to about 80-90% of my abilities before I was afflicted. It was also nice to revisit acoustic playing that I had basically abandoned a couple of decades ago; it has yielded a number of new tunes. This is a workprint mix of the first of them and the first tune that I have ever recorded in Logic Pro Studio.
Lyrics:
CRAZY WORLD
Music & Lyrics © 2008 By J.A. Stewart
– ALL RIGHTS RESERVED –
It’s a Crazy World we live in, and you can watch it on TV
Where insanity and reality... both look the same to me
ET “news” is just a poor excuse, for “Idol” talk and trash
About bimbo babes and airheads... with no sense, but lots of cash
Bridge #1: No, I don’t watch those TV shows, don’t listen to the Radio
I get my music from the World-Wide Web, it’s the only way to go – whoah!
Chorus #1: Well, it’s a Crazy World, just take a look around you
it’s a Crazy World, Honey... as wacky as can be
It’s a Crazy World, so full of crazy people
It’s a Crazy World, Baby... except for you and me
Yes, it’s a Crazy World we live in, it’s gettin’ crazier ev’ry day
And I used to be a part of it, till I hid myself away
Now I survive without “Survivor” and I’ve found I don’t get “Lost”
In that vast and crazy wasteland I avoid at any cost
Bridge #2: So I don’t watch no Oprah, Springer, Montel, or Dr. Phil
I just live my life with uncommon sense, I guess I always will –
Chorus #2: Well, it’s a Crazy World, just take a look around us,
it’s a Crazy World, Honey... when push comes down to shove –
It’s a Crazy World, so full of crazy people,
It’s a Crazy World, Baby... so let’s make Crazy Love

I love that line. I agree with you;, TV got totally inane, so i cancelled my satellite dish. Really great playing, singing, and mixing. The world sure is getting crazier by the minute, but we still have great music to listen to in here! :-) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Kenta. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Someone once said: "If you don't like the world the way it is, make your own."
We do that in our relationships, which steel us from the ugly realities of our world... as you have done with your Morning Light. ;)

Went looking for a new tune from you this morning - none &mdash 04/27/08 - 01:56:17 PM

Hey, Bud... I aim to please. I'm glad you liked what you found. :)
Kevin Ayers... now there's a name I haven't heard in awhile. *Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes* was always a favorite of mine.

This is a killer song Joe &mdash 04/27/08 - 05:02:36 PM
Love the lyrics and delivery. Your singing has that natural experienced feel to it and the overall production is on a pro level if I've ever heard one.
Dare I say it, this one needs to go "Commercial" This one's going on my iPod, thanks for the great track Joe, it's awesome.

Hey, Ed... thanks.
I'm starting to lay down tracks for a couple of CDs, before this Crazy World explodes... so I'm pleased to hear it sounds *Commercial* to you. That has a nice ring to it. ;)

Great... &mdash 04/27/08 - 05:25:13 PM
very Pleased to see a post from you sir... I've always appreciated your level of critique when commenting... the same good ears on display there, are in fine form here.... very polished and radio ready production... sounds like you've got Logic firing on all cylinder... and I love the writing... a fine "sane" look at pop culture... with some excellent treats all through... I loved the coo-coo clock residue in the outro... this will help cement your rep a great set of ears... and it's always hardest to produce yourself... we have the least objectivity when working on our own stuff... Re: Great... &mdash 04/27/08 - 10:45:47 PM
Thank you, Scott, but please... don't call me *Sir*.
1) I haven't been knighted (yet); 2) It makes ME feel old; and 3) It makes YOU sound like Dion. LOL
I try to be honest and helpful in my critiques, especially with those pieces that clearly strive for excellence, such as your work. I know and appreciate the value of others' good ears and only offer what I truly believe might help toward that end.
You are certainly on target regarding producing one's own work. At the first sign of any real lucre, I would call a producer and an arranger and book studio time. ;) But if anything, I am hyper-critical of my own work.
To me, this take IS really only a workprint, with a hasty, placemat vocal. It still needs some tweaking... and *love*... before I'll be satisfied. In the end, I doubt anyone else will notice the subtle differences, but I MUST keep my ears happy! ;)

Nice tune Joe &mdash 04/27/08 - 06:56:31 PM
Classy, accurate, well recorded pop. Great set of lyrics we can all relate to. I'd have liked the acoustic to be a bit louder in the mix, but that's a minor nit. Bass is really nice - accurate and melodic.
Cool.

Re: Nice Tune... &mdash 04/27/08 - 11:55:34 PM
Thanks, Neil.
The acoustic is actually pretty high in the mix... it's just not very *fat.* As I pointed out in one of your tunes, I really like how you capture the sound of your acoustic guitar in your recordings. I haven't recorded an acoustic guitar in decades and although I am well-versed in the various micing techniques, I am having a hard time getting a decent sound on my recordings.
I suspect it's because my office/studio is too absorptive and it's soaking up all the lows.Recording elsewhere is not really an option. So I'm thinking of slapping together a couple of reflective gobos to lay atop a plywood base, creating a little *guitar corner,* where I can get a livelier sound.
Coming from a real bass player, I appreciate your props on the bass part. I never play the thing until I'm recording the track. Then I just wing it, based on what I'd been hearing in my head. ;)

Rockin' fun... Who don't like that? &mdash 04/28/08 - 01:39:15 AM
This is a great listen. It's fun, it's lighthearted, but it sneaks a bit of wisdom in almost without us noticing.
All instruments played expertly. Really enjoy the vocals, and the bg's are spectacular. The rhythm track is very strong and expertly constructed.
I really enjoyed this song, Joseph. It's going on my iPod, for which I thank you.

Not so sure about me either! &mdash 04/28/08 - 05:35:37 AM
Very clever and witty song, and totally professional production! The instrumental intro made me think of John Cougar Mellancamp's "Jack and Diane" for some reason... although it's been a couple of decades since I heard that song! I really like what you did here. FWIW, I'm not sure if it's the world that is crazy, or just the medium on which far too many people rely to get their information about what's going on in the world... ;>) [ Reply to This ]
Re: Not so sure... &mdash 04/28/08 - 10:54:01 AM
We're ALL a little bit nuts, Clark. Paradoxically, we HAVE to be, to maintain our equilibrium in our Crazy World.
I'm flattered the intro would remind you of "Jack and Diane"... a great song. There may be some similarity in the feel, but not really musically. Nothing that would hold up in court, I trust. lol
Thanks for listening and for the props, Clark. ;)

dirty laundry... &mdash 04/28/08 - 02:16:15 PM
Fun chorus, and really fun bouncy music (great guitar/bass work!) Strong singing and lyrics, and EXCELLENT mixing here, having your voice floating above all the music, but still fitting in, I envy that technical detail, you nailed that. My wife and I feel joyfully ignorant of all the TV shows, we've been so busy living life, reading books to each other, working on hobbies, video-taping condors, that we just don't have time for TV... but I agree that it is a crazy world, hope this song shames more people into getting out and making it less crazy. :-)

But if it were on *The Board*, they'd probably want to put me on TV and I'd be right back in the middle of that Crazy World again. Nope I'm just as happy to live a quiet, anonymous life... and to have folks like you tell me they like what I do. ;)

Never... &mdash 04/29/08 - 12:23:45 AM
Joe, with those eye-glasses they'd never put you on TV... so "never" fear. Plus they'd make you change the title of the title of the song or something...
I read today that when Paul Davis recorded "65 Love Affair" that it almost didn't get released. The song actually was "55 Love Affair". The record people didn't thing anyone would buy a song about high school boyfriend-girlfriend love from the mid-fifties, so they finally changed the name to "65" Love Affair. Interestingly enough, the lyrics stayed the same, sung by Paul in the song as "55"...
As Johnny Carson would have said... 'I did not know that!"
Nice that you are still performing for us teeming masses.

Re: Never... &mdash 04/29/08 - 01:47:21 AM

slight correction... &mdash 04/29/08 - 01:03:16 PM
I went back to check my source on the above story. All the original lyrics of the song (about 50's car-hops, etc.) did stay the same... except for the lyric "55 love affair" which was changed to "65..." and sung that way. Just want to keep the record straight! [ Reply to This ]
wow &mdash 04/29/08 - 03:18:17 PM
This was a cool song with a very catchy melody, refrain and cool acoustic bed. Very well put together. The production seems very tight, and your energic acoustic guitar is blended perfectly in the mix. That isn't easily done.
The well done bass guitar has a kind of seventhies sound, and I heard a little glimps of Gilbert O'Sullivan's way of making songs in here. In my eyes a brilliant songwriter so I hope you take that as a complement:)

Re: crazy good... &mdash 04/29/08 - 10:11:00 PM
Thank you very much, ktb.
I get that *fat* sound by using my special pizza plugin. LOL
Actually, i fiddle with EQ, a wee bit of compression and limiting until it sounds like what I used to hear onstage in my playing days. It's really sort of a *3-D* mixing approach that includes placement, volume/EQ and very short delays to simulate a *live* performance.
And yes, I play and sing all tracks myself, except for drums. But I've learned a lot in the past year or so about being more selective about the loops I use and how to edit them to get what I want.
Thanks for asking and I'm glad you enjoyed the result. ;)

Loved the accoustic action on this! Your voice sounds to be soooo commercial! (take it in a way that makes ya feel good...) Great chunky bass action! Wonderful chorus! I don't know anything about song structure but this just seems to have placement of all things, right.

Thanks, Dion. It's been many years since I got a workout on acoustic guitar, but it turned out to be a good move in my physical rehab. Glad you dug it.
I've never taken the term *commercial* in anything but a positive way. To me it implies that it's something people find appealing enough that they'd be willing to buy it. Nothing wrong there... it helps make the world go round. ;)
