Description:
This song started as a "writers block" breaker. I came across some lyrics Steve sent me a long while ago and wrote a little acoustic thing late at night before bed, hence the whispering tone. I kind of liked where it was headed, so I spruced it up and sent it to Steve, who added some great harmonies, strings and piano. It has a samba-ish tempo going on. Steve described where the lyrics came from this way:
"It was inspired during a trip to Italy- there was this gorgeous American girl by the pool one day, (and she WAS reading Anna Karina) and it was funny watching the effect she had on all the guys. The track is about desire and the effect it has on us - it drives us, but also makes us unhappy - you can always find someone more beautiful, but it's a passing thing. Love and relationships are about more than sex and desire, so if that's all you focus on, you're never gonna be content (hence dissatisfied).
Nuff said.
Lyrics:
Dissatisfied
©2008
Lyrics: Steve Craig, aka echoroom
Music: Philip VanDusen, aka racerat
American girl reading Anna Karina
Divorcing the saint just to marry the sinner
In time-lapse eyes she’s getting thinner
You just can’t help yourself.
Love runs in, it’s as big as a house
Lust breaks in and burns it down
Smells like trouble but you drink it down
Explain it to yourself
Here it comes, there it goes bye bye
Always dissatisfied
When you’re closed, when you’re open wide
Always dissatisfied.
Her skin glows hot under European sun
Look down, realise you’re sucking your thumb
The waiter falls over, don’t want to go home
We just can’t stop ourselves.
Love floods in, it’s as big as a house
You want to sleep but you locked yourself out
You know where you’re going to crash tonight
Don’t wanna meet yourself.
[Chorus]
Bathing the pool in a state of undress
You rattle your cage in a state of distress
The boys sweat tension while the girls flick their hair
You just can’t stop yourself.
Love pulls up, it’s as big as a house
Lust lights up and burns it down
Set the fuse and the sparks just fly
Don’t want to meet yourself.

A terrific collab. Love the combination of the voices, and the lyrics are very good. Some terrific lines, and a whole novel of images and ideas! The guitar sounds really nice - lovely tone, and great rhythmic playing. This is very nice. Nicely done to both of you. Kudos. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks so much for dropping in dajama! I always am glad when you lend your discerning ear. Steve is an amazing lyricist, it was the perfect catalyst to get me out of my writers funk.

Always Dissatisfied &mdash 04/28/08 - 12:40:56 AM
As i said to philip, this was written in the days when I used to spend a lot more time on my lyrics (actually i wrote this on holiday).
I recorded a terrible version of this (since deleted from MJs), and was delighted when Phil sent this to me - his fragile vocal perfectly captures, for me, the volcano of desire and tension simmering in this track.
Here it comes again ... [ Reply to This ]

Steve,
This is what collab's are meant to be: fast and furious. I think this is the quickest turn for a collab for us ever. I think it was, like 2 days.
I loved the lyrics from the first read and knew I had to do something with them. Your voice is top notch as usual and the strings and piano round out the vibe perfectly. Thanks so much for your stellar chops mate.

I think that you should both be very satisfied with this fantastic song. Love Philip's voice and phrasing. Impeccable musicianship and production, and Steve's voice as back-up works beautifully. I can imagine that it took a few takes to get the phrasing so spot on.
Downloaded, of course, thanks.
Cheers

stuffy &mdash 04/28/08 - 10:46:38 PM
My allergies have been horrible this season in SF and you can hear how stuffy I am on this song. I could hardly breathe! I think it adds soft tone to the vocal somehow. Thanks for the comment on the phrasing. I like when it goes "off standard" a bit. That is something I really admire in other singers. I appreciate your comments! [ Reply to This ]
Killer! &mdash 04/28/08 - 02:52:57 AM
Guys, this is great tune by all means. Such nice playing and rhythm coming from you Philip (you know I'm a big fan of your playing and work!) and such great background work from Steve. Both of you performed this really well.. nothing is wrong at all! Killer tune.. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words Birdman. It always makes me happy when you stop by. I also appreciate your taking the time to listen to "Come Clean" one of the earlier songs as well.
B-Man, you have such a long creative life ahead of you. I think it is great how engaged in this community you are at such a young age, and cranking out such good music as well. Keep on jammin'

Hey M,
Jut listened to your new song. I guess it is really the 2nd to latest (you are one prolific dude, I can hardly keep up). Really nice bluesy number. It has the quiet intimate tone of vocals I tried to capture in this one. Well done. Thanks for the listen and comments.

Hey Bud,
I've been in the "work hole" for so long trying to get into the groove of a (very hard) new job, I had developed one seriously blocked creative outlet. This tune came out of nowhere with just a little late night noodling with some of Steve's lyrics. It came together fast--I didn't futz with it too much-- and I just posted it. Just shakin' out the cobwebs. Thanks for the props. Your new atmospheric stuff is absolutley killer!

...when I first saw the title, I thought it was a Rant post about echoroom and I was wondering what he could possibly have done...
I'm certainly not dissatisfied with this excellent tune...understated, in the pocket music accentuates the poetically accurate (how's that for a term?) lyrics.

Thx DA,
Quite a few listens, a few more fans, but fewer downloads. Glad you liked it enough to take it with you. That is what means the most to me. I offer my stuff up for free and it makes me so happy to know people are taking advantage of the free tunes. Egobandit wrote me once and said he was painting an apartment one day and was listening to a playlist of a few of my things and it rocked his workday. Just knowing my work is being heard and enjoyed makes it all worth while to me. --P [ Reply to This ]
We're so lucky. &mdash 05/01/08 - 10:51:58 AM
Every time I hear you guys together, I get alternately thrilled and frustrated. Thrilled because I know I'm going to hear something wonderful that has your sound, but still surprises me, and frustrated because I know that were the music industry different than it is, you guys could be massive stars.
I'm glad that you're massive macjams stars, at the very least, and that you are generous enough to share your music here.
Steve's not kidding that he's in peak form with the lyrics here. There are a pile of great lines. "Her skin glows hot under European sun, look down, realise you're sucking your thumb," is so tremendously evocative, "smells like trouble but you drink it down..." Is it legal to just paste all the lyrics in here, because it's just such an amazingly well written song? Sigh, Steve, always making us work harder.
Phil, I LOVE your vocal on this. If the strut king had taken the lead it would have given the song a completely different feeling and your take on it (late at night, so no one could hear you, which is so perfect, given the lyrics) really does mesh beautifully with the music. There's a nice gentleness to the tone that softens the syncopation. It's just wonderful.
Another winner guys, and honestly, one of my all time favorites from you. [ Reply to This ]
lavish praise &mdash 05/02/08 - 01:26:17 AM
Wow. First of all thank you for the lavish praise. I got to waft on a cloud of fantasy about being a massive recording star there for a few moments. That was great. I appreciate the long and considered comment. So many one liners these days from people, a welcome respite. Coming from you, one with more fans than anyone I have seen on MJ, I am deeply flattered. Steve, I'm sure, is as well. He is a true poet and I am always blown away by his lyrics as well as his voice. It is an honor to call him a friend and true artistic partner. Some times it is the ones we slave over the least (like this one) that can somehow shine the brightest. Bon Chance--P [ Reply to This ]

This is probably one of your best collabs if not the best for me... i like the understated arrangement.. and Steve's vocals here sound just pleasantly different... this is probably the first song that his vocal performance is distinctly his, and not mistaken for David Bowie. Thumbs up! I may have said it in every collab of yours, but this one has a unique appeal to me different from the rest. [ Reply to This ]
