The brass... ...is just jarringly powerful in this composition. I applaud you for hanging in with the dissonance. Your creative orchestration--especially the percussive elements--really drive hard and compellingly... What? So short? I was just getting wound up. ... Now I am wondering where you could take this. Is there a tune, a theme of some design, to pull this along further? (I don't understand what this has to do with Gem, but I do like the possibilities you have started with here. And I don't understand why you're not getting more hits. I'll be marking you as a favorite because I think I like what's going on in your creative imagination.) Peace. Wow - triple the praise Paul - a lot of hits are nice - but getting feedback from some of the excellent composers on MJ is even nicer. I'm especially pleased to be 'faved' by you as I value your insight, especially after listening through a number of your works. This piece is one of a number of short pieces that perhaps work better in conjunction with one another. I'm not quite ready to try a larger work - but someday I hope to tackle a Sonata as you are doing - perhaps Cello. Thanks again for listening! Gem ooh - very cool! The tension in here is so thick you could cut it with a knife! The occasional relief is welcomed (by me at least). Very cool use of percussion, though it gets a bit drivingly jarring to my ears - I'm kind of a wimp though. You clearly have a lot of talent with orchestration and composition. Thanks Karen I find that when doing electronic classical, it's easy to do the lilting and melodic, and much harder to get the rhythmic and contrapuntal - especially at volume with full brass. Luna, this is really nice Branching out. I can dig it. Very nice piece here. The length was fine despite what others may say. It was enough for me to get the taste of it. I think it would work best as a soundtrack. LL Check out my latest song called Googolplex Times Zero

short and sweet i can't believe how good you are with the classical stuff. i'm completely envious. i love 20th century classical, but never attempt it as I don't feel i have the vocabulary to pull it off. you can, and with much style. i have a border collie named Penny. Nice works Doing orchestral stuff is very tough and you have a really nice start here. I really like the contrast and the dissonance. The main things I am hearing deals with reverb and instrument placement. You have to remember where each instrument in the orchestra sits (both on stage and in the mix) The brass is behind the strings and the winds. Percussion is in the back. But in your mix, it sounds to me like everyone is sitting next to everyone in a straight line. I don't get a very good sense of depth. Also, it seems that you have a very wide stereo field. The brass/winds are panned mostly right and the strings/percussion mostly left. In a real orchestra they wouldn't be so hard panned. The only other thing is the instruments start to get muddy and too much on top of one another. You need to carve out a sonic space for each section or instrument. Again, I think you are limited by Garageband. But this is a function of eq and verb. I think the biggest improvement you could make is to graduate up to Logic Express. You really have some great ideas and I think they could really shine with some more flexibility in your software. Lest you think I am just tearing your work apart, I think you have a really great foundation to work with. I know how difficult it is to achieve what you are going for (at least what I think you are going for). I still am learning a lot as I post music and listen to comments. Thank you Kyle! Your advise is very helpful and I am really learning about the mixing process as I go. Getting field depth is my next challenge - and as you've said - the mix is too wide and flat. I plan to get Logic this summer and switch to that. I like the simplicity of GB - as I hate reading technical manuals - but I've tapped out the software potential fairly quickly. I am going to familiarize myself with your work - as I don't know you yet. If you get time, I would value your feedback on my other orchestrated pieces. Thanks again. Gem I can totally see an energetic border collie racing across a field chasing some poor rabbit or bird. i think this would be a perfect soundtrack to a short film - it has the movement of the collie, but the dissonance of the chase and death - with the perfect pounce at the end! I agree with Kayle, the panning/placement of instruments seemed a little off in my headphones. But overall I think it's a great little piece. As a french horn player, I'm all about the brass. You caught the picture Kassia... I'm working on placement and panning - it's an ongoing education and experiment. I think very few pieces get exact orchestral verisimilitude - but some get closer than others. Perhaps a switch to Logic might help.
