Description:
I pulled down the first version of this as the drums killed me and I felt it needed more work. So I re-did the song with new drums, recorded the bass over to fit the new drums, and a couple of more tweaks. I even got my old trumpet down from the wall, and managed to blow some notes during a couple of bars. For some reason I can't get the same tone out of it as I did playing in the school-band some 30 years ago;)
I got help from the great Karmatoburn on keys, and it lifted the song to a new level:) Thanks for sitting in my friend! I hope it won't be the first and last time...
The art work is a painting I did a couple of years ago.
Lyrics:
You and me
Thor Oliversen©2008
Down in my bone
I feel a certain tingle
When you enter my zone
Yes, when we mingle
I feel so alive
Just being with you
My heart tells me yes
And my soul do too
And I know that it’s you
And I know that it’s you – and me
When you tell me goodnight
I feel so good inside
And you know, I’m a lucky man
To have you by my side

I like it. &mdash 04/28/08 - 02:16:23 PM
A good song, good playing, good singing. However, even though im new to recording, I don't know much about the production end of it. I do think this pop/funk/jazz style needs a matching steely dan style 'shimmery pop' finish to the mix. I don't know how you achieve that tho (more harmony vocals and reverb?), but I do know that it would make the song sound that much better. [ Reply to This ]
smooth.... &mdash 04/29/08 - 12:58:46 PM
I think you are right that this could have been some smoother to match a more Steely Dan'ish style.
I guess my preferences are closer to James Brown and soul/funk artists with a rougher edge. But I see where you make the connection to such artist that you mention. I think I may have moved a litle further away from what I usually put out with this new song... Well, that's exciting..:)
Thanks for listening:) [ Reply to This ]

Actually I'm not quite sure where you're from John... USA?
It was a pleasant experience to do a song together with you.
Thanks for joining - you made a big difference with your
tasty keys. [ Reply to This ]
This has the works &mdash 04/28/08 - 08:27:14 PM
everything seems to really jive in this, everything is swinging right it seems. You voice really shines quite nicely. Great style, like the horns come in at the right time.
This was a fun listen! To me it is one of the best I've heard you do. For this style I'm not even sure if I heard better here at MJ.
Terrific !
Way to go! [ Reply to This ]

Nicely done, Thor and ktb.
Terrific funk/jazz groove. Reminds me somewhat of Boz Scaggs... if you even know who that is.
Groovy stuff, terrific musicianship. ;)

Aaargh, Joe beat me to it...again... &mdash 04/29/08 - 06:47:51 AM
I'm sitting here afloat in the Seventies funk vibe...thinking of Boz Scaggs' 'Silk Degrees'...
The drums are great, and so's the guitar. The beauty of karma's playing, on this and many things, is that he fits seamlessly into the track...Harmonic and vibrational glue, totally in synch with the groove...

Boz &mdash 04/29/08 - 04:39:14 PM
I think you have mentioned Boz to me before.. I take it as a great compliment:) Tried to find Silk Degrees on iTunes but no such luck...
Thank you for your encouraging comments Ed. I appreciate your visits much and admire how you are such a vitale supportive pillar at macjams. [ Reply to This ]
It's on there, Thor... &mdash 04/29/08 - 07:09:33 PM
Or, at least it is in the United States. Search under 'Boz Scaggs'. Try the song called 'Lowdown', among others... 'Lido' too, I think...
Silk Degrees is the album title....
If I owned it, I'd send it to you...

The Dan mix &mdash 04/30/08 - 03:01:46 AM
I think Karmatoburn is the obvious reason for the Steely Dan vibe. His tasty keys adds a smooth delicious feeling to the sound.
I'm always thrilled to see you have been visiting my song.

You are a master of this pop-funk genre Thor. Groovacious, and well sung as always.
Good job on those keys KTB!

Perfect match &mdash 04/29/08 - 07:13:12 PM
John and Thor, this works so well - lovely groove - could have been done 20 years ago (a compliment). I too hear Boz S and the Steely Dan reference works for me as well. John's keys fit so well into this vibe.
Lovely playing and singing Thor - those drums sound great!

everything sounds really nice and into a great groove. I concur with Ed and Neil about the B. Skaggs sound. That's a good thing.

Awesome &mdash 05/01/08 - 12:31:00 PM
Love the funk feel. Good voice and lyrics. The guitar work fits perfect. Great riffs. Karma is boss on keys. Like the semi hollow guitar tone, nice warm tones. Very good guys. [ Reply to This ]
Beautiful lines &mdash 05/04/08 - 12:26:35 PM
Love the smooth jazz lines. Kind of a Wes Montgomery/ George Benson meets Larry Carlton/Norman Brown.
Apart from the stellar guitar playing. Excellent song and wicked groove. I thought this was awesome. You are now my new favourite guitar player.
Karm - I am always a big fan. Nice job Bro! [ Reply to This ]
