Description:
SOME JAMS JUST WEREN'T MEANT TO BE:

I was feeling inspired Sunday, so I tried to bust out a funk tune, but as the evening wore on, I tired of it. Being the kind of person I am, I trudged on with it, 'cus if I don't finish this song now, I'll never finish it. As you can hear, all kinds of bad sounds started infiltrating my system. Squeaks crackles, pops, chord and pickup buzzes, and so on.

Finally, I decided to lay this baby to rest with a searing guitar solo, but I forgot that I can't really play that well. Long story short, I snipped off all the especially bad parts of the lead guitar solo to let the funk shine thru. I think it was a better choice and I hope you do to.

I left a couple snippets of the lead in to show you how poor my shredder chops are. Oh well, I guess you can't be wonderful all the time, but it is my ugly baby and I have to care for it just like all the rest.

Have a listen. Feel free to pick a wedgie and clean your toejam while you listen. And have a sense of humor. It's the only way to truly appreciate it.

HARDWARE:
Fender Rhodes with electrical problems, Fender Strat on lead, Home Made Bass (whose bartolini pickups somehow cancel each-other out at live gigs and my sound drops out for 5-10 seconds), Home Made Electric guitar on rythym (with a screwy-jack that I need to fix which sometimes buzzes if I don't insert the chord just right, Digitech RP350 pedal interface (that sucks the soul out of every recording I make!) Ibanez 1.0 mm 'Paul gilbert' model guitar pick special ordered from japan (maroon, the only pick that I don't drop while strumming. 1 tallboy of Mickeys malt-liquor and a half a family size pizza from Papa Murphys (Hawaiian with extra sauce)

you have no problems in the guitar department, i reckon a bit more could have done it! Nice groove.

Thanks &mdash 04/29/08 - 11:42:26 AM
I'm not a fan of my own lead playing. I'm going to remove the leads from this song at home and use it as a backing track to build up my chops.

Not bad! &mdash 05/20/08 - 11:50:27 PM
This is a good start. like the sound and the feel.

A few suggestions... try and add a bridge leading to a chorus. (Give us a few more chord progressions.) I haven't heard a Rhodes in a while. Its got a nice sound but you are playing in the same register as the bass. Try playing a little higher and find a way to complement the bass line rather than shadow it.

I think you should leave the guitar leads. I like them and they reflect your personality. Its hard to get a good lead and make it perfect.

good tips, I just started playing the keys. I hope to get better at the rhodes soon & I have a new thing to learn about recording and making sure everything fits in it's own pocket. Thanks again for listening

I think this is just the start of something wonderful maybe add some horn hits and changes could be a great song.

Funky.... &mdash 07/22/08 - 07:47:43 PM
I enjoyed my listen. Same issue here as the last though it sounds like the rhythm guitar is to thin or just not up in the mix quite enough. It may be the RP 350 you seem to hate.. ha ha. I am beginning to question whether buying mine was a good idea ;o) Cool bit of funk you have goin here and your chops aren't as poor as you think. I never heard anyone shred in a funk song anyway ha ha.
Side note... are you using the RP as your interface into garageband for everything?

Never heard anyone shred while playing funk?!? You better listen to some Funkadelic. Eddie "maggotbrain" Hazel was the master shredder for the one of the best funk bands ever.
