CBGB's Demo Challenge (1)
Description:
I recently was asked by the hardcore band numb$kull to record and produce a 3-song demo they were hoping would land them a gig at NY's legendary CBGB's. I liked their sound and didn't have the heart to tell them CBGB's was no more, so I agreed to do it. This is track 2 from the demo (Track 1 being 'War on War').
I asked lead singer/guitarist Joey Saint Agony the meaning behind the song, and this is what he had to say:
"...yeah.. It's for all those poser wannabe rockstar superstar maggot $#!#heads I've ever had the dishonor of crossing paths with on the road. I mean just stay the #%*! outta my way, you know?"
I also asked him what he thought of my production of this song.
"what the balls? You made it sound like we have 12 guitar players. How the bloody $#%* are we supposed to play this live? I do like all the feedback nonsense though. Brilliant."
According to Saint Agony, the other "wankers" (numb$kull members) were unavailable for comment.

Lyrics:
I don't like the way you say hello to me And I don't trust your crooked smile
Yes I despise your shifty eyes and how you speak to me
I would drive a thousand miles
To get away from you
Get Away
I don't like the way you play guitar and sing
And I don't like your little band
Your new tattoo
is bruised and scabbing underneath your sleeve
I'll do whatever I can
To get away from you
Get Away

nice one
rsorensen
thanks. and regardless of what St. Agony says, there's only 2! well, 1 more during the solo. Okay 2 more during the solo. and 1 more if you include the bass. oh and another 2 for the constant feedback... oh never mind.
Mystified
...to start this challenge out with a BANG!!
I agree...great guitar sound on this. Loved the vox, too.
rsorensen
thanks! they're pretty hard-hearted fellas, and they'd never admit it, but they were quite stoked to open this CBGB's Demo Challenge. They even abstained from whiskey for a good half hour before the show just so they wouldn't mess up. THAT'S how serious they were about this. Such dedication.
Vic Holman
and a cool numbskull feedback. really has a lot of aggressive angst.
rsorensen
I LOVE your demo. You gotta do more like that, man.
gail60
I liked this alot. I am sad that you would drive a thousand miles just to get away from me. But alas, that is how enemies act towards each other. Geez, such talent Soreneson! Great job as always numbskull!!
rsorensen
typical for you to think this is all about YOU, gail. I in fact had nothing to do with the ltrics, but the guy who did, Joey St. Agony tells me to tell you he'd 'like to get to know you better". Not sure what that means... but there you have it.
Thanks for checking this out and commenting, pal!
Feter
extra o di nary ... man I m enjoyin this alot !!
so alive so powerful ...jee ..this is cool ..
Rock on !
rsorensen
thanks. I'd pass on your kind words to the skulls, but they're a little...er.. incapacitated at the moment.
DWL
top marks, top guitars. You'd have got the gig without a doubt!
Cheers
Dick
rsorensen
thanks! I don't know how I'm gonna break it to the band that there is no CBGB's...
five_extra_arms
First off, I have to say - what a great story!
Second off, you have created some brilliant and noisy guitars and pounding drums. I kinda get a Nirvana feel with the relaxed vocals getting all excited and screamy in the end.
I $&@$% love it!
rsorensen
story? what story??
yeah big Nirvana influence on numbskull's sound. the guitar player actually totally stole his solo from the main riff on 'scentless apprentice'. He thought he was being so original too. Poor bugger... and I mean 'bugger' in the literal sense of the word, too.
thanks for commenting and super happy you like it! I'll let the boys know when they wake up.
five_extra_arms
I didn't mean that you were making it up, kinda story..... It's a really good story!
Hey Ridd, I love the logo you came up with. Someone oughta buy you some crayons and get you drawing. You have natural talent!
(you know that I know you're an artist)
rsorensen
hehe thanks man.
lavalamp
Rockin' song. Love the way the guitars sound. And once again, great vocal delivery.
You're in!
LL
rsorensen
thanks dave. I think he needs to smoke more cigarettes to get a true punk voice, but I'll tell him you think his vocals are good. Man i hope he doesn't read this or I'm a dead man.
ktb
Joey's got it right. This absolutely f*ckin brilliant. The production is nothing short of a thrill ride. Dig the effect on the vocals, which btw are awesome! The guitars are like guided missiles to my pleasure centers. Totally rocks.
rsorensen
coincidently, that's the title of numbskull's next EP! thanks man.
lengold
a little bit of clipping in this?
Great blast.
Cheers
Len
rsorensen
Hmm there very well could be len, but I didn't notice any? I treid to be careful about that. Don't tell Joey...
What a killer sound!!
This is bloody brilliant!!
Fav and Downloaded.
Chris
rsorensen
Thanks for downloading, Chris. I had to really fight Joey to convert this to Mp3. He was like "what the $%^& is an em-pee-three? @&%^ off with that $#!*." (He's a vinyl/tape kind of guy). I had to explain how it was impossible to upload vinyl to the internet, to which he responded "intrawhat??"
tokai
blistering guitar, great production.
rsorensen
thanks! your latest is killer.
chemystery
Well fry my cilia! This is great guitar playing and infinite feedback. And the vocals are dripping with angst. Kick ass.
rsorensen
hm not sure what a cilia is and I'm afraid to look it up, but thanks for digging this! Yours is really cool too.
davisamerica
guitars are blazing but i really am digging the vocals ..too cool
rsorensen
thanks D. There was actually an alternate take on the vocals with a different melody but this one was a little angrier so I went with it... er.. I mean Joy went with it. You can hear the alternate melody on the BG vocal "I don't like your crooked smile" in the first verse.
Everybody wants to be the one. nice guitars
rsorensen
thanks tw. I really cranked em up for this one and they were little hard to get under control in some parts i must confess. glad you like it.
freakin awesome!!!
rsorensen
appreciate the listen and comment
Nick_Flash
Huge sound and great song overall. This will be hard to top. Tell Agony he freakin' rocks when he comes to.
rsorensen
he's still out! but I'll tell him. Your tune's awesome.
Alannah
... I need to get my pre-amp working again so I can crank the vol on tunes like this one ... right now I am just plugged right into the old PC until I can figure out where I went wrong with the wiring ... but it was still a great listen even if I couldn't get the vol way up high !
rsorensen
thanks alannah. yep this sounds best cranked.

gathering points for voting? cool band name.
bud
great opening - I love the feedback answer to the chunky power chords and the amp hum backing under the vocals - brilliant. Killer tune and excellent vocal mix.
rsorensen
thanks bud. your latest slays me!
I. Spike
The real deal!
No posers allowed!
This is the shit!
Love it!
I especially love the HUGE GUITARS!!!!!!!!!
rsorensen
thanks, but I'm not sure what it is exactly you like about this ;) appreciate the listen and comment.
That was the fastest I've ever hit the fav button, hehe! (right after the intro snare roll) The intro is so perfectly done. Excellent production I thought. Killer guitar sound and riffs. Love that snare sound in the drum track. An outstanding entry in the CBGB challenge and a definite download!
rsorensen
thanks mikey. wasn't sure about the raquetball snare hits, but I got used to them. glad you liked this.
i have not been listening to much lately with school and finals coming soon, but this cbgb thing, i had to wiegh in on. i liked this one. being the first i have heard, i liked the heaviness of the guitars. they have a way of making the whole song breathe with a demonic life of its own. great track!
Allen
rsorensen
dont you hate when life gets in the way of the music? i know I do. really happy you found the time to participate because your song rules!
Boris the Bull
This is really just terrific stuff. Commercially, this should/could/would sell in big numbers alongside Filter and many of the post-Grunge ilk.
really, this is very well performed and maintains all the ingredients that make for good ol' "kick arse" music, which seems to be vanishing more and more these days.
great riff, great performance, great vocal delivery, great lyrics - and even the percussion is top notch, wow!
big congrats on this. i really enjoyed it... twice already! ;)
rsorensen
thanks for the thoughtful comments boris. it'd be nice if there was more rocking stuff out there like this right now. one can only hope! thanks for checking it out.
craft
great song... Keep it up
rsorensen
thanks craft. will do.
echoroom
are soo intense! This is a killer track, like a scream wall of reverb. The vocal is sleek and sinister - you've outdone yourself here... excellent track!
rsorensen
thanks echo. really digging your latest too.
michael2
what an intense sound (and i'm loving the noise). great job.
rsorensen
thanks dude. yep it's indeed noisy.
Relic67
everybody liked the guitars on this one...
I did too!
Sweet!
rsorensen
thanks. yeah they're kinda hard to miss i guess. there's only 7 or so :)
Bob6stringer
Effin' great, really a punch in the gut. Wish I could be sharing the stage at CBGBs but The Man (work) has got me down. This tune puts me in a frame of mind to burn down my office! Unfortunately, it's a home office...
rsorensen
you shoulda stuck it to the man and done a demo anyway! you could have called it 'stick it'. haha thanks for checking this out.
ledebutant
I downloaded this right after you posted it and have listened to it a bunch of times and figured out the third or fourth time that the greatest way EVER to listen to it is with my hands right on the woofers of my speakers. You should try it during the last 30 seconds, especially. It's ecstasy.
Another fantastic one. Go and get famous, already.
Axgrinder
This is really "bent" twisted and all that arse kickin stuff! The vocals remind me of ~?~ days since past before I ruined my short term memory, whoops! Nicely done indeed..... I enjoyed this much, thanks 4 sharing.

guygrooves
Just the way I like my punk rock guitars lol. This tears your head off!!! This is awesome, my fellow Canuck.
obbster
The riff reminds me of Satin's Bed by Pearl Jam. This is a very grungy/sludgy song. I like it.
Great sounding guitars.
rsorensen
thanks man. Vitalogy's my fave PJ album so that reference doesnt surprise me. thanks for listening; glad you like it
SweetBacteria
I really admire the way you can just switch tones from one song to the next.
Very dark and crazy fun! It kind of sounds like walking through a dark sweaty crowd in a small venue in downtown ny. kudos!
egobandit
where have I been this is killer love the into reminds somewhat of Fugazi The vocals work well !!! Excellent downloaded!!!!!!
Great guitar work, great great song. Sorry I missed it. KILLER!
Take Care
