Description:
This is a twisted song that brought me back to the way I used to write songs back in the day - on my Tascam 4 Track. Drum machine, bass and a big fat RAT pedal. I never used a guitar back then so I'd run my bass run through a RAT pedal. On this song I did exactly that, ran the bass through the RAT pedal and miked my beefy Ampeg bass amp and ran it into GarageBand. I used the Heavy Blues guitar filter in GB for the left track and the same Rat pedal with the Seventies Rhythm on the second track. There's a third bass track with Rat and Heavy Blues straight up the center.
No real guitars used, just my Hondo 2!
Lyrics:
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU LOOK MY WAY?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU CALL MY NAME?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE IN SCHOOL?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO COOL?
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT MY HAND?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU WALK AWAY SO MAD?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE SO LONG?
AND WHY? WHY 'CAUSE TOMORROW I'LL BE GONE?
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
AND WHY? WHY WAS I JUST DRIVING YOU HOME?
AND WHY? WHY DID WE HAVE TO BE ALONE?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO KISS SO RIGHT?
AND WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SPEND THE NIGHT?
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS TALK
Hardware:
Hondo 2 Electric Bass (black and scratchy), RAT pedal, Samson R11 microphone, 1 blue guitar pick, 1 yellow guitar pick, no guitars.

Excellent song and the 'guitar' sound is really good. You've captured the feel really well. Your vocals are perfect.

Cool how you did the guitars. Hondoes are very versatile, I see. You really capture the spirit of the punk scene. But I big question; Why wouldn't you use a red pick? Sometimes, I really don't understand people.
The pic: You have a very distinct style my friend. Have you ever submitted a cartoon to a publication? You are very talented musically, artistically, and comically.
Twisted stuff,

so, let's talk already &mdash 05/02/08 - 03:59:41 PM
great tune. first I would like to talk about how i was impressed with the riffs and sound out of old black & scratchy. very convincing as a real guitar sound.
now I would like to talk about the vocals. Tough and direct. ... and I feel guilty of not talking about this, you're fine choice of colored guitar picks. [ Reply to This ]

You know why - &mdash 05/02/08 - 04:29:31 PM
cause shit happens the way it's gonna happen and if you think you're in control then it's just one rude surprise after the other till one day you wake up and say fuck it man I'm just gonna take it as it comes and be thankful for every day on this mortal coil - then you pick up your guitar and turn your pain into music and it doesn't seem so bad after all. Great track man - you rock. Peace out. [ Reply to This ]

wow &mdash 05/02/08 - 11:33:41 PM
This sounds great. Thats awesome that you are using only bass. I have some friend that have been playing in a band for a while now and the line up is 2 bass players and a drummer. You can do amazing things with bass
I had a Tascam 4 track(portastudio 2) still have it actually.

Great song, I think the electric/rock balance is great, I like the emphasis on the word TALK and WHY. The vocals are passionate, good performance all around. I feel a proper re-recording with a more controlled mix would definitely beneficial for every track to make things stand out more and appear less flat. However thats all post production work and unrelated to the writing or instrumentals. Keep up the good work! [ Reply to This ]

WHY? &mdash 05/05/08 - 12:29:22 PM
The unguitars (thanks, Rebsie) are cookin, and the shouted baseball-bat lyrics are spot-on! When ya get screwed up and around, the only thing to do is write a loud song.
BTW, I don't use plastic guitar picks, I use pennies mashed into picks by railroad trains. [ Reply to This ]
CBGB Demo &mdash 05/05/08 - 01:26:53 PM
Hey everybody. Thanks for listening to my song. It ended up being about the most natural song I've recorded in a long time. It's more than a good exercise in house cleaning. When it comes down to it, you don't need much to write a song. I feel like I've eliminated a lot of the garbage that I usually dump into a song to cover up my poor musicianship and wonky vocals. This song allowed me to be myself. Tall, loud and wonky.
I appreciate the comments and the support. I hope to be a better songwriter because of you. If not, then it's because of you too!
Thanks a million! [ Reply to This ]
