Description:
just me and my acoustic. i like the melody of this song and the vibe. i like the lyrics but really should have another verse of them. just a line or two. also a little more spontanaeity in my singing toward the end. i didn't record this a friend did. i have never done any home recording, but look forward to starting. i feel the recording and performance turned out pretty well considering it was on the spur of the moment and i only got two takes. i also notice i repeat the knock on the door part about a hundred times, hopefully it won't become irritating to you by the end. tech stuff, comments or questions on the recording i probably wouldn't be able to answer. but any comments about the song and performance would be greatly appreciated.

an old epiphone acoustic i got from my brother, and thanks for the comment on my singin' because i would have liked to have rerecorded that part , their are a few vocal parts that make me cringe. that will probably be my only posting for now until i get a multitrack or pc recorder. i can't wait to check out yours. my first feedback and they said its a gem! i'm glad you found me first.

Great! &mdash 05/03/08 - 06:16:58 AM
Thank God for procrastination, 'cause if I was doing the things I should be doing I wouldn't have checked this out and very possibly would've missed this piece.

You have a classic, solid chord progression, but it's your expressive voice and the lovely melody that makes this a winner.

Welcome to MJ!
A heck of a first post!
I'll keep my eye on your uploads in the future.

yeah i always liked the melody but the way i sing it is not my usual style, i usually just want to belt stuff out so this is the softer side. i was tryin' to keep it sincere but still hit some notes n there. the chord progression i just kinda stumbled on; usually i use straight chords, mostly minor, and try to put a new one to keep it interesting and any listener on their toes. i look forward to hearin' yours now. i'm glad you neglected whatever it was you were supposed to do to listen; and good luck with it once you start!

spontaneous recordings are always my best. so far i rather like your voice. i can hear the vocals and guitar clearly so the recording sounds fine to me. the song sounds good to me i like it. nice emotion.

yeah being spontaneous is closely related to making something sound honest and thats really everything performance wise. nothings tougher than trying to captured the original emotion you were feeling after you've played through something a million times. a spontaneous creation also makes it feel like something special is being born instead of something your struggling to create. you see the possibilities rather than a field of obstacles. thanks for listenin' and now i'm off to hear yours.

thanks man yeah i bought a martin acoustic recently, but after listening i thought maybe i didn't give that old epiphone enough credit. as far as vocals i guess you just do what you do and your stuck with it like it or not. birds sing and bullfrogs croak and i guess my singin's somewhere in between. ha ha!

Wow- &mdash 05/04/08 - 06:57:13 PM
Great voice! Sounds to me like you've got some experience... you've got a nice warm vocal sound- lots of soul... The guitar sounds real good... it's easy for me to see why you like the melody and vibe- very much the style I prefer.

While I like this just fine as is (I'll take a heartfelt performance over structure any day) it would be cool to see you expand on this a bit.

Welcome to Macjams... I look forward hearing more from you.

really nice, thanks so much! using the word "soul" in their really made me feel good. i don't really have anything i look at as "experience" per se' ,but i do rehearse my songs a heck of a lot here at home and haven't played in anything outside my home in a few years. so its nice to get feedback especially from peers like you and the guys @ mac jams. i wish i could've babied this demo a little more performance wise, but the recording was quick and out of my hands. i look forward to start home recording and chipping away @ the learning curve. what things did u have in mind production wise? other instruments? harmonies? i have kinda drew a little bit of a blank on what could be added.

Nice song &mdash 05/06/08 - 09:27:36 AM
Your guitar sounds nice and sparkly in the beginning, but then one notices that there is no bottom to it. Maybe a second microphone? Or just placing the mic closer or in a different location? The highs are A-ok, the lows still need some work. The room ambience is very nice. Is that just your space or do you use a good reverb?

yeah it could've used a second mike, and as far as the reverb or room ambience; i didn't record it and it was my first time around any of it. there is an effect on the guitar and that warmed the feel up. i really appreciate your comments and it sounds like you could answer some of my questions when i get started recording. can't wait to hear some of your stuff.

I like it too! &mdash 05/06/08 - 09:56:05 AM
Very engaging melody, guitar accompaniment really suits the song, and your singing is warm and enjoyable to listen to. I didn't mind the 100-knocks-on-the-door, in a way that seemed to be apropos. I also really liked the little stops-n-starts near the end there, nicely inventive and gave the song a more intimate feel. The recording was actually rather good... given what you said and what I hear, it sounded like a single mic to pick up your singing and guitar, so its impressive to get it to sound quite clear, which it was.

Welcome to Macjams! I hope you get more opportunities to record/post songs soon.

Great voice ... &mdash 05/06/08 - 12:12:23 PM

.. reminded me of Seal .. really, really good... with touches of Hootie at times .. I could go on for ages on recording improvements .. but for an acoustic demo .. live played and sung .. this is brilliant... I just trying to reduce on the plosives .. sounds like something is being bumped occassionally and a pop-shield/filter for the mic would really help too... doesn't need to be expensive: old coat-hanger/old nylons.

thank you for those comparisons i really appreciate your insight. i never have thought of who i sound like very much. i am inspired by a lot of different singers and thats what keeps me going. i did bump the mic stand while recording this a couple of times. with this song i felt i need my vocals to sound intimate kinda soft and quiet, but my tendency is to want to belt my voice out. so in the process i was moving on and off the mic thus the reason for bumping the mic stand. i really enjoyed your latest post. your a heck of a piano man. thanks again.

Thanks dude.. &mdash 05/08/08 - 06:54:25 AM

.. I feel my latest post is very unrepresentative, I'm a guitarist really and so far removed from a 'piano man' it's
not funny ..lol.

i'm really glad you liked it. your catalog looks like it has a lot of different styles in it, so i'm looking forward to hearing your versatility. my next posting which may take some time( i have no studio @ home yet) will be fairly different it will still be me and my acoustic but it will definitely give off a different vibe. hopefully you'll like it as well. thanks again!

Your Voice &mdash 05/15/08 - 12:32:11 PM
Sounds great and the vocal is delivered with style. I'd be curious to hear more instruments with this, perhaps some strings, though it rings with perfection as it is.
