Description:
The Rowan, or Mountain Ash, is a tree that was most revered by ancient pagans, who believed it warded off evil. They also used its berries as a bit of a cure all. I think they look quite spectacular, especially in the Autumn when the berries form. Wintering birds like them too!

I made all the sounds with the Albino 3 and Zebra 2 softsynths and also used the DubStation plugin to get the dubby FX. The drums are midi loops from the World Jampack that I've messed about with.

Not sure if it's ambient really, I'm not too hot [or bothered, really!] about genres, but it sort of floats along.

Thanks for dropping by and listening!

Spacey &mdash 05/03/08 - 06:04:44 AM
This is pretty cool.

I like the steady bass drum and percussion, although there were times where I thought the shaker could be a bit lower in the mix.

Nice lines and cool synth sounds.
Very spacey.

Nice one... &mdash 05/03/08 - 11:57:41 AM
Thanks for the listen and comment. Yeah - maybe you're right about the dubby shaker. I'm actually working on a remix at the moment. This one is a little cluttered towards the end I think.

Thanks again for the kind comments!

Nice and &mdash 05/03/08 - 06:45:22 PM
mysterious sounding. I like what you've done with this.... for all the modern sounds there is a feel that could be associated with ancient times and would be ideal as backing for a documentary or TV show about ancient times. I'm quite overlooked by a lovely Mountain Ash in my neighbours garden, cheers M

Thanks Mo &mdash 05/04/08 - 06:12:21 AM
Yes - they're really nice trees. Except, maybe in your case, when they block out the light!

Cheers.

Very nice &mdash 05/04/08 - 06:04:05 AM
Very good sounds and it flows very nicely. Very cool track, it has sounds familiar with Jarre and Tangerine Dream. Really impressed with what you have created here. That DubStation is brilliant, I use it all the time. Another good delay is 'Bionic Delay' which I also use alot, check it out.

Oh my! &mdash 05/04/08 - 06:17:11 AM
Comparisons to Jarre and TD. I'm really not worthy.

I will have to watch I don't overdo it with DubStation! It's a lovely bit of kit and so simple to use. I'll check out Bionic Delay, thanks.

Cheers for listening and the lovely comments.

That arpeggio &mdash 05/05/08 - 08:58:25 AM
Is that Zebra? I now have two tracks up (my latest two native american tracks) that use the Zebra arpeggiator.

Lovely sounds. If this were my track I'd throw some more sounds in. You can get density from using thick sounds, and you have some lovelies here, or from filling every corner of the spectrum with different parts. Personally, I'd thicken this track out a bit by having something in the low intermediate range, and occasionally some very high frequencies, maybe some bell sound.

Very pleasurable on the whole.

It's the Zebra! &mdash 05/05/08 - 09:16:27 AM
Thanks Vic. Actually, I thinned it out some! The mix got a bit too cluttered and I couldn't de-clutter, so I took out some sounds. The arp in the Zebra is really cool, don't you think?

Listened to Dirt Roads earlier. Nice job on that.

Cheers.

The trick &mdash 05/05/08 - 09:41:30 AM
The way to de-clutter is to put lots of EQ on everything, and only cut frequencies. In particular get rid of a lot of mid and low-mid when it's not absolutely essential. My track Vermillion Cliffs has 9 Zebras without much of a problem.

Alas! &mdash 05/05/08 - 09:57:29 AM
I'm back in work tomorrow. :( But maybe next weekend I shall have another play. I do mess around with EQ usually, but didn't do much on this one. Maybe I'll have another go at the original file, which I've still got.

Thanks for your input! :-)

Good opening of the song, with the synth pads.... I like your sound on this one.... A dreaming song, where the listener can fly away.... Fantastic.....

Excellent, wack. One up for the scousers. I disagree with Einarus about the shaker. I think you meant it to be right up there as a driver or at least riding shotgun. A jaunty trip through time. Quite incidentally, the Rowan is one of my favourite trees.

Nice &mdash 07/26/08 - 02:04:27 PM
choice of sounds to get the message across. I like how the melodies are not rushed. The ending could be a little more dramatic.

Nicely done!

I don't know why, &mdash 10/17/08 - 01:09:57 AM
but I remembered the part of the movie where Mel Gibson, as Mad Max walked through desert. Maybe I was thinking Australia and lonely harsh places and one man's determination. I love it. Thank you.
