Description
Mother's Day is coming. My mother has been gone for 11 years, but this was her favorite of all my songs. (I know, can you believe it? With all those songs to pick from, this is what she liked best!) So I'm posting this in honor of my mother.
This song is from the first children's musical I wrote, what turned into a 7 year endeavor and worldwide touring effort. Happy Birthday World is the overture song to Music of the Planets, a musical tour of the Solar System. Each song takes on characteristics of the planet: Mercury is a calypso; Venus is a French love song; Neptune is a surfer Beach Boy type song. Most of the songs are based on a similar melody, so it is a long theme and variation thing.
This was recorded in 1988 in a studio in my friends basement. I over-dubbed myself on all the synths and he played MIDI percussion. We recorded onto a 16-track and used every one, bussing and combining tracks many times. The good old days.
Main vocalist: Janet Planet. That's her stage name. She took it before this recording, so I can't claim inspiration. Fitting name, tho?
Among the 3 kid choir is my son, Anton (twonicus), who was 8 years old at the time.

Lyrics
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WORLD
Way, way back in the beginning
Before there were children singing
Before there were clocks a-ringing
All was quiet and forlorn.
Then the silent hush was shattered
As the first light spread and scattered
Some held hands then cooled and gathered
And out universe was born.
Happy Birthday World!
Glad to se you unfurled.
Happy Birthday. Have a good day.
Happy Birthday World!
Then the whole mass started spinning
There swirling air began a-thinning.
It looked like matter started winning
As the Sun shined through!
Out of gases formed dense clouds.
Dry land peaked behind the shrouds.
Planets circled 'mong the crowds,
Some with little tiny moons.
Happy Birthday World!
Glad to see you unfurled.
Happy Birthday. Have a good day.
Happy Birthday World!

Excellent! JP's got a great singing voice, rings through clearly and beautifully. Great recording (did you do any recent post-processing on the tracks, or is this the original '88 recording, as-is?) Normally I cringe at the old synth-brass sound, but the opening fanfare seemed just fine to me. Clear melody, well-written lyrics... the only thing I could possibly critique is the typos in your lyric post here ("Glad to se you unfurled."), heehee! Ah, this made my day. Happy upcoming Mother's Day to all mothers across the universe! Perfectly produced sentiment!
