Description:
As I was getting ready to post this song a couple of months ago, I listened to it one last time before hitting the "send" button. I was having the thought (well more like a daydream) - "wouldn't it be INCREDIBLE if ziti was playing the guitar in this last part here, instead of the GB midi guitar??" After I posted it, I started talking to ziti about this and discovered it was actually a possibility!
So here's Glacier Ride again, now with ziti's incredible guitar! He also remastered the song, and if you listen to the two versions one after the other, the difference in richness and depth is just amazing. If you're so inclined, here's the original:
http://www.macjams.com/song/40642
THANK YOU ziti, for putting your magic touch on my song!
The original song description is below:
I've been a motorcyclist for 35 years, and have been on lots of great
trips through the western part of the US and southwest Canada. A
couple of years ago I and my riding partner were dropping back down
into the US from Alberta after having weathered some ferocious winds
and weather the day before. But THIS day was shaping up to be
beautiful as we crossed the border and headed south.
We hadn't planned to go through Glacier National Park because we
generally avoid such places due to the traffic that can be hard to get
around. Nevertheless, we stopped in at the north entrance because it
was right there, and talked to the ranger about weather conditions up
in the park and to get a lay of the land. He said it would be a
beautiful 3-4 hour ride and that we'd have very little traffic because
of the direction we'd be riding and our entrance location. So we went
for it. That afternoon was so spectacular it's hard to put in words.
As I rode through (what's left of) the majestic glaciers, rode by
gorgeous waterfalls and saw lots of wildlife, this tune started to
come to me. This was before garageband (for me), so I was conceiving
it as a piano piece, which I began to work with when we got home a few
days later.
So here's "Glacier Ride", now orchestrated using the Symphony
Orchestra, World Music and Voices jampacks (in other words, another
Magnatone mishmash!) I've tried to incorporate the very helpful
feedback I've received from previous posts, and look forward to
hearing whatever thoughts you may have about this one. Enjoy the
ride!

A beautiful ride, indeed! I can imagine lovely, wide open scenery, glacial streams, etc., all those things you mention in your song description. Very 'up' feeling piece, exactly what I need right now! I love those really fast 16th-note flourishes that happen occasionally (they have have a percussive quality). Wonderful piano playing, as always. Love that big brass section towards the end! The Ziti guitar solo is wonderful too.
davisamerica
you know how much i loved the original ... and this one is still breathlessly wonderful ... amazing indeed and now it is "mine"..lol ..right then
kassia
What a wonderful way to wake up! A gorgeous piece Karen. As always, your playing is superb. The composition is beautiful. You have a very unique, recognizable sound that's all magnatone - I LOVE it. The strings and brass really help create that feeling of grandeur that the Rockies inspire. Ziti's guitar and re-mix finishes it off very nicely. Just perfect. Thank you!
guitapick
...and I love the description of the song's origins. Ziti's lead is fire on ice...
gail60
I hated it. I gave you all 10's only because I felt sorry for you since you are always messing up! Poor Karen. Uh huh....sure. GOOD GRIEF...would you stop being so good at making music? I have a hard enough time already and then Miss Thang shows up and Whambo! I am dead in the water. LOL Karen, you know I love your music and this is just gorgeous. Ziti does such a great job with his addition to this! You are so talented and I truly adore your creations. Now stop it!
SJB
I loved the original version and still can't understand how you can possibly conjure this music out of thin air. This version is equally spectacular and I think Ziti has done a great job with the mastering and the guitar - such a big piece deserves a big guitar sound and that's what Ziti has delivered.
Love it!
Steve
Everything is still gorgeous, the choice of sound is amazing and really a great atmosphere created here. When Ziti's solo entered, just sent chills up the spine... KUDOS both, this is really fine piece. I (bow deeply) for this work. Wonderful trip!

I absolutely adored your original version, and Fran did indeed fill this out even more with channelstrip magic... but his guitar solo in there was a delight. For some reason, the boxy fuzz he added to his Sapphire guitar reminded me a bit of old "Night at the Opera" by Queen, and their cool guitar sound... I love that sound. Excellent, you two! I am so glad you collaborated on this, a crowning success. I bet this will be on REPEAT on a bunch of iPods now, definitely on mine! Thank you.

To you both. A wonderful place to visit and you have captured it in music.
Thank you so much..Russ

is so wonderful, beautiful, breathtaking, awesome, amazing... (lets see what other words I can through in...)
Basically she could write one of these masterpieces and repost it once a month and it would rocket to the top of the charts each time.
But no she goes and gets the Ziti guitar master to make it even better! SHEER GENIUS!!! Disney are you listening at all! Someone said it before... Hire this lady for the millions upon millions she deserves and have her create sound tracks for you!!!
Karen.. I bow and grovel in the presence of true master!
Ziti... Only you could do this and do it so well!
Ok here I go deleting my work... it simply disgusts me after listening to this... Yet another addition to the Karen playlist in my ipod... Rock solid favorite all the way!
Jarvoid
as I wrote in my note to you I can feel the bike thru all the magical music and to complete a perfect sound
picture the guitar brings tones of exhaust howl and blat...sorry you non bikers, but I know what I mean, and so does anyone who has ridden through mountainous or glacial areas.Pucka excellent work Mrs Magna...

such beautiful and melodic music flows through my speakers right now. Every instrument is precise and played with some real feeling. Really upbeat and a joy to hear. Well done.
LunaTrick
Your timing and metre is one of the most precise Karen. As with Angel Convention and others, your playing is note perfect - even in the more complex rhythmic sections. Ziti's guitar speaks for itself and compliments your mood and melody very well.

You 2 need to stay close in touch.... this is wonderful

in the overall sound. And a nice touch from Ziti's guitar work & remix. Cool to have a second go at this tune.

a total JOY for me. There are a lot of MacJammers who write compositions that just eat me alive. Futzpucker, Alimar, Mysti, etc and etc...magical rides full of emotion and surprise and true artistic skill.
I was so happy to meet karen when she joined the crew here before i even heard the music she could make. I was hooked by this piece when I first heard it....if you listen closely, Karen has used blues at the big climactic crescendo just before the guitar solo....when I was jamming along with this to figure out what to play, I howled with delight when I added power chords at that point and played a few stevie ray licks...but when the part where i was supposed to play came in, i really had no clue what to play...but the structure of karens piece is so perfectly logical, coming up with an improvised solo was easy... I just played the melody her changes suggested.
As far as the mastering...it is all ChannelStrip from metric-halo. I have been using the software for about a year to finalize my recordings, but i am only learning how to really make it work. i was astounded when i took the aiff of karens song with my guitar mixed in to GB and then applied chnnelstrip to the master track. i just applied a preset I had saved from recording the band and POW, her music jumped out at me. Just like the digital tools in photoshop work better on digital photos as opposed to scans, the channelstrip seems to do great things for the software and midi instrumentation, more so than the bands more traditional recording process. I can't recommend channelstrip enough for GarageBand users. The full version is at their website and is under $100
Thanks karen for this wonderful experience!

Already one of my favourite instrumentals this year - Fran joining up can only improve things. Haven't got to his bit yet, but I can already hear improvements in the overall sound.
Fran joins in - ah yes!
Niiiiiice!
Cheers from Oz!

The work that Ziti has added just gives this fantastic piece of music an added dimension of quality and uniqueness.
Covet this greatly!!

Approaching a tune on which someone has added something to someone else's work, whether it's going to feel whole and together...
This one seems quite organic, and Fran rises to the occasion... The mastering is nice, too... This has terrific presence...
Ed
Alannah
.. the Zitification on this K ... it gave it a Joe Satriani feel to it (although I think I might have said JS to Z once upon a time and he didn't really care for JS ) ... or am I confusing him with someone else .. hahahaha LOVELY addition!
Much and many kudos... this is gorgeous.

power the song through at the end... really inspirational.

You are such a great player...and a biker...how very cool.

I love the way it flows through different emotions
Great work

I know you like some of my tracks but they are nothing compared to yours. This track has been properly composed, played with lots of harmonies and instruments. I dream of making tracks like this. This is a fantastic track and thats before the brilliant guitar comes in. I have not listened to the first version so I don't know what magic Ziti has done, all I know is this is an amazing track that is so invigorating.
Think this song could get any better but I believe it has very nice additions Ziti wonderful music Karen...much enjoyed...

this is a grand piece - stunning work - I haven't heard the earlier version but the guitar sounds outstanding. Impressive!
Peter
Roxylee
and I thought the first one was perfect. Zit's superb guitar adds to the ride. Such majestic mind imagery here, just marvelous!
This is INDEED a ride. I'm back from vacation and, lo and behold, listening to this piece I am swept away on a sonic vacation!
What a lovely sound (and melody!) you got on those keys. This is magic...wonderful...I just wanted to spin about the room like a butterfly in a field of flowers...
...and Ziti...What an inspired choice!
Positively stunning post! BRAVO AND ENCORE!
Be well my friend!
Just ONE tiny complaint...I feel that Ziti's guitar should have been just a tad louder in the mix...but that's just me. Consider the source. My latest post is ridiculous crap. THIS is a masterpiece!
caroline
yorkie bar!!! big juicy lumps of sound - yum yum, pig's bum!! just delicious - deep bows to you both xoxoxo

it builds from small to a grand piece. it has many bells, so it is beautiful. the guitar of ziti is better. an important addition. 0x0

Your making music in a stellar vein magna. The Ziti addition sounds nice as well. The Ziti anticipation was almost killing me:) I almost was getting spasms waiting for Z to do his thing. And he did real cool with that Z style of his.
Thanks you two!
Terrific !
paul f. page
...just keeps getting better. Bravo to both of you. All the kudos above (and below) are well-deserved. Just a superlative creation in every respect.

bud
and great addition to an already wonderful song.

It was good. Now it's better. The way you exit the piece is so graceful and calm after that big ol' rock and roll crescendo; I agree with Drakonis's Queen reference.
Nice collab.

Very well written, produced and executed.

god this is so incredible. even moreso now with the guitar over it and bigger production. what can I say? amazing!

I'll be the second to admit (after Timothy Devine) I was surprised to see the names of Magnatone and Ziti as a collaboration simply because they seem to excel at writing quite different kinds of music. And I will be the second to say (after Tiler) I was anxiously waiting, waiting, waiting for Ziti's guitar to appear.
It certainly was worth the wait. It takes a magnificent piece and elevates it. That said - I guess I would have liked to hear more of the guitar somehow integrated into the soundtrack. But maybe the way it is is the way it had to be: Ziti stepping forward at the end to do a powerful solo before the two of them roar off on motorcycles into the sunset.
As to having a hard time imagining these two collaborating together - that is one of the exquisite joys of hanging out here at MacJams: you can expect to be surprised by the unexpected : >
Robert Rayner
the first time round, and Ziti's guitar solo at the end is just perfect.
The overdrive guitar within a classical piece. Brilliant

busy lately. This is a wonderful song! But that goes without saying as all your songs are brilliant. Everything is so well crafted and of course your piano playing is amazing. This also would make a great filmscore!!!

Glad you gave us a journey to accompany you on.
shavingronaldscar
well, this one got the attention it deserves, that's for sure hehe. not sure my two cents are anything more than redundant at this point, but here goes:
first impression: epic grandeur, with skill to match.
deeper listen: the finer points of rhythmic juxtaposition throw back the curtains of composition to reveal a mathematical mind applied with a creative heart and a deft hand. tasteful progression of dynamics, cohesive build, fine use of chord changes.
suggestions: move beyond GB! your music deserves it! please!
asconejar
very happy song, it feels like driving indeed. It brings me to a beautiful place full of love full of hope.

Holy cow, you are super talented Karen. I need to listen to more of your songs. The playing, and the sounds you're using, and with so much energy and life to it all... well, it's amazing. And of course, ziti, like an old pro, tears it up at the end with a great lead. What a cool tune!

I left a comment before but it didn't work because I forgot the Title. I LOVE this. i really wish I could afford those Jampacks xD and Guitar with Orchestral is Simply amazing. Perfection even. Its always the perfect pair. Great song.

You are certainly very talented! I just drifted away listening to this!!
Doug Somers
this mix is cleaner, more intimate. And the guitar - whoa!! The build in energy and soaring quality are so infectious. It reminds me on an IMAX soundtrack to the part in the film where the pilot flies over the edge of a cliff and down a river valley.
You then have the masterful restraint to give the whole piece a soft landing. Lovely!
Thanks,
Doug

Nothing like the real thing, baby! So terrific. Thanks.
grah3am
... but I'll say it again. This is excellent , and the guitar fits perfectly, like it was always intended, even if it wasn't!
