2 irish jigs by Relic67
Genre: Folk (traditional)
Fan List
Description:
a very rough attempt at recording some irish fiddle and guitar.
Neither instrument is played in a very polished way on this one.
I was inspired by another recent post (Dee) to try recording guitar and fiddle together.
I am having a hard time getting the fiddle to sound good on the recording.
Perhaps mic placement?
Any suggestions on how to record this sort of thing are very welcome. Help!

I really tried hard to hear the roughness and lack of polished playing you describe. Sorry, I couldn't hear it -it all sound great to me. I've heard this kingd of music live in pubs in Kerry and this sounds like the real deal!
All the best

Glad you liked it.
I think my intonation was suffering a bit towards the end, and a few guitar clunkers. However, evidently it didn't sound too bad overall I guess...

Bit pitchy towards end (I'm a picky sod)....nice piece, though.
Fiddle sound in particular is all about the room, and then mic placement; sounds like a fiddle as is, so I don't know what you're going for hear.
Cheers, Shaky

Polished smolished! The main thing is, the spirit comes across in your playing, and it does. I'm an aspiring fiddler and guitarist also, and I really like this track. Great job.

glad you liked it...
I think I'll do some reels next :)
Cadman
Hiya - glad I came across this one! Really nice fiddle playing - a lovely light touch to those melody lines.
The other half of Cadman - Chaz - plays fiddle, such that our latest collection of songs is called - On The Fiddle.
We get around the mic placement (and when playing live, feedback) problems by using an electric violin :-)
I think it's tough getting a good violin sound - and TBH what you have sounds pretty good to me - that is, it's not too shrill or overpowering.
If you wanted to improve it, it currently seems like perhaps you're getting a bit too much of the room - so I'd be trying out attempting to mic it up much closer (with hopefully a directional mic) and see where that gets you.
Possibly nowhere - but hey, isn't life one long experiment? :-)
/is feeling strangely philosophical, pre-supper.

I'm definitely going to try your mic suggestion for my next fiddle post!

Two lovely jigs played with style - you've nailed that Irish ornamentation. What are those jigs called?
Cheers

I don't know the name of the first one, but the second is called Jerry's Beaver Hat, if I'm not mistaken.

would I be asking too much to get you to do a collaboration on two of my pieces with the fiddle?
yes mic placement.. Im hearing a transducer mic mixed with a close prox. mic can really bring out the fiddle..
L.R.Baggs.. makes a good transducer..
very glad you posted this.. my 2 yr old loves to dance to it!! and crys when it stops.. I think I`ll be playing it a few more times!!
Relic67
hey thanks! making a two year old happy.. what more can you ask for!
I'm up for a collab, but I should warn you that unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to do music so there could be delay. only other caveat is that I don't know much about fiddling outside the Irish genre.. so "results may vary" LOL!

Great stuff! I really enjoyed listening- you can't help tapping out the rhythm to music like this. Super playing- it's the way it ought to go!
