Description:
To celebrate my first birthday here at MJ I wanted to 'do up' the first song that I posted here. I don't know if it's an improvement on the original, but I added another verse and bass and more drums to update it. The vocal was extremely hard for me as there's a hell of a range to it, but as I've said before, I donned some ballet shoes and stood on my toes on a chair in the kitchen and managed to reach those high notes in the end LOL. I always liked the song, and I prefer the original vocal I did, but with this croak having taken up residence in my throat... there's not a lot more I can do. Thanks for listening anyway and hope you like it.

Lyrics:
Places That I Go To

Places that I go to, while layin’ in my bed,
Have fields, so warm and golden
With sunsets oh, so red.
But there’s always someone, I am lookin’ for,
Someone to make it perfect.. and you,
You could ,make it so.

Places that I sail to, while driftin’ in my mind,
Are more beautiful than places,
Anywhere you’d find,
But though I’m searchin’ over hill and dale,
You’re not there, my special Angel,
You’re here inside my heart.

Break.

Places that I’ve been to, when I’ve closed my eyes
Are warm, with gentle breezes.
And star filled velvet skies,
None shine as brightly, as my love for you,
Like a flame my special Angel,
From my heart to you.

Thank you Feter &mdash 05/15/08 - 06:07:20 AM
for being so supportive all this past year and for all your very kind comments. I'm pleased you think this is a 'cool' ballad, but it's not my real birthday for two weeks yet. I should have made it clearer that I've been here at MJ for one year now, so it's my MJ birthday/anniversary so to speak, but thank you once again my friend, regards M

this is sooo sooothing - thank you - i like that funny thing that you do to your voice that cher did on that (whatever it was) track - beautiful lyrics too - awww - thanks again xoxox

Thanks Caroline &mdash 05/15/08 - 06:03:55 AM
It is a dreamy type song and I'm glad you found it so. That 'funny thing' wasn't what Cher did LOL, the chair slipped LOL. I really didn't manipulate anything apart from use echo... that funny quirk is what my throat is doing lately so maybe it's 'a happy accident' LOL, cheers M

nice relaxing music... great work with the drums and backing synth-calliope (for some reason, that synth calliope sound often reminds me of ice-rink "muzak", or the "Feathers McGraw" penguin music in Wallace and Grommit.) Not a bad thing, but I find it lightly whimsical. Your singing and harmonies are reallly nice. However, you need to turn off the pesky "Enhance Tuning" thing in GB, it gives that electronic "snap-to-grid" sound to your voice that I find distracting, and your singing doesn't need pitch-correction :-)
ttfn,
Drakonis

Hi Drakonis &mdash 05/15/08 - 03:47:47 PM
Thank you for listening and for the nice comment, though I swear I didn't use the 'enhance' thing. With my throat probs, though, I did do a few tracks, in order to get the best bits right (not a lot of best bits though alas LOL) and I cut and pasted... especially on those falsetto parts and I can now hear that it does sound like the pitch correction, but my throat has kept cracking for weeks now. Also I tried speeding up from 120 bpm to 122, but it didn't work and since I went back to 120, there's been a slight judder on the tracks, which sounds worse on the MP3 for some reason. I do appreciate your Input very much so thank you once again, regards M

I've found &mdash 05/15/08 - 02:19:38 PM
that when you want to hit those high notes all you have to do is wear underwear two sizes too small. You also get a nice falsetto too! 8-)
But seriously, great song Maurice! Lovely lyrics which remind us to go to the SOURCE. There is a whole new dimension to be explored on the inner. Peace to you, buddy.....Norman

Now you've given your secrets away I'm still going to stand by you LOL, each to his own; though I wondered why you had a squeaky voice. Thanks Norman my friend, glad you liked this, cheers M

This is a true Moviz classic tune. One of the best vocal deliveries I've ever heard from you. Wonderful production and great drums work. Enjoyed every second. A big thanks for you for being here and sharing this beautiful friendship musically and personally. You're a pearl in MJ world. KUDOS for this work... Happy MJ B-Day!

Is it a year! &mdash 05/15/08 - 06:37:42 PM
Seems like you've been here forever Maurice. Always a risky business re-doing an early post - sometimes it can sound more polished but lose something in the process. Anyway, I think you've pulled it off. Nice song - I always enjoy your lyrics - they're so poetic. Thanks for all the support you've given the MJ community over the past year. I hope summer continues where you are - it's feels like autumn again here! I even put the heating on to take the chill off!

All the best
Peter

Very nice lyrics Maurice &mdash 05/16/08 - 01:52:24 AM
And as always you sing them so well. I like the backdrop for the song and especially your rhythm track with the percussion.

The only thing I can say that takes away from it for me, is the quality of the vocal recording. You have a deep rich voice my friend, but here it sounds to me like you phoned in the vocal. All the bass texture of you voice seems to be missing and we're left with only the mid and upper mid range of the sonic spectrum.

It's a great song with a great vocal in need of a remix on the vocal to put the depth back into it.

But even so, it's a very enjoyable song Maurice.

thanks for sharing.

Ed

I Know &mdash 05/16/08 - 04:59:38 AM
what you mean Ed about the vocal. I too would have liked it 'rounder' but when I got that warmer sound it sort of 'disappeared' and I had to keep it edgier. That's why I prefer the vocal on my first version because it's warmer..... wish I could get a better understanding of this mixing thing. I think part of the prob was that with this song I have to sing below my normal register at the beginning in order to be able to get the highs at the other end and that affected the mixing. I'm sure you know what I mean, but thanks for the constructive comment; I do appreciate it and I'm glad you liked the song overall, regards M

Hi Michael. &mdash 05/16/08 - 04:41:02 PM
Glad you think so. I did want to repost not just because it was my first post, but because I actually liked it and at the time being new here, not many people listened to it. Apart from that, someone had said it needed bass.... so that's what it's got now and a croaky vocal, thanks again and cheers, M

Has it been a year already? I can still remember hearing the original of this when you first posted it and thinking what an original sound you had. Since then you've gone on to produce and share some amazing music with us. This place wouldn't be the same without you. Can't wait to see what the next year brings! Great song, wonderful performance, and nice vibe. Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

I went back to listen to the original last night and saw that you were the first person to respond and comment on that song which of course was my first here. Yes it's a year, but it strange how time plays tricks with the mind, as from one point of view it seems ages and yet it has passed quickly (as time does). Thanks for your continuing support and your encouraging comments, cheers M

Good tune Mo if I'm not mistaken it's in C - if your having 'problems'
wie your vocal just key it down or up whatever hits the spot . Me I'd have taken this down to A but I bet I wouldna have sounded as good as you. Aw the best .

Thanks &mdash 05/21/08 - 07:31:50 PM
for listening BPJ, glad you liked it, but the prob was that it's such a wide range that I'm already at the bottom as low as is possible and also as high as I can go at the top end. Time was when my voice was as smooth as yours too, but all that seems to have gone by the wayside, cheers my friend, M

have such a great voice Moviz.Your songs have so much feeling.I can picture you singing this live in a club- the audience would be mesmerized (If they weren't too drunk)Beautiful song.

What makes you think I wasn't drunk when I sang it? LOL. I Love how you're always so supportive about my vocals. Believe me, I had to sing this so many times, because of my throat condition (which seems to have cleared considerably at last), that I was mesmerised myself, as well as frustrated. Thanks for the nice comment Mark, cheers M

Happy Anniversary Maurice! &mdash 05/21/08 - 10:19:26 PM
I think this shows your increased confidence level in the backing department in particular. Drums are particularly apt.

You have a vibrato which really stands you out from the crowd, and with the delay or reverb or double tracking (I never was good at picking fx) in the high bits it sounds very unusual indeed. Long live unusual voices I say!

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Yes, I used the lot LOL..... and I'm pleased your on my side with the unusual voices comment, which I truly appreciate. I'm pleased you liked the backing too on this version especially the drums, which I'd thought may be a bit too pronounced, but kept them there to oppose all the background smoothness, cheers and thanks again M

Hi Rihjo &mdash 05/22/08 - 06:11:55 PM
Nice to meet you. Thank you for listening to this and for your favourable comment too. You can read above my excuses for the amount of echo on this track. It just needed to be smooth and my voice was so 'edgy' sounding at the moment, hence I though echo as opposed to reverb, might cure it. Also it's kind of a dreamy meditational type number, so needed to sound a bit 'out of it'. That's my excuse anyway LOL, thanks again for dropping by, regards M
