Description:
I know, I don't have a girlfriend (i'm married); but Nicole and I used to just get in the car and play "let's get lost" for days on end before we had a kid and real jobs.
i posted this as an open collaboration (I'm Uneasy) last week, and then figured if i didn't come up with something for it, i was lame. so here it is, this is a complete Pavement rip-off (at least in vibe), with some Rolling Stones falsetto back ups at the end. Not my best, but not horrible either. Theres also some Built to spill and Silver Jews in there (if you don't have the first Silver Jews record you really need it. Recorded on a boom box in a kitchen and brilliant).
See if you can come up with something better (RSorensen already did).

Lyrics:
we were listening to Built to Spillwe were rocking out, wondering
what's wrong with love?
you get the car, i'll get the map
maybe we can go somewhere far away
you get the car, i'll get the map
maybe we can go somewhere far away
(chorus)
i'm driving
with my girlfriend
anywhere we go is gonna be a little better than here
she's charming and so lively
a little off key when she's singing to the radio
ho ho ho
you wear some clothes that i find
kind of silly
but that's okay with me
'cuz you're the one that's wearing them
you get the car, i'll get the map
maybe we can go somewhere far away
you get the car, i'll get the map
maybe we can go somewhere far away
(bridge)
bah da bah da...
(chorus)
i'm driving
with my girlfriend
anywhere we go is gonna be a little better than here
she's charming and so lively
a little off key when she's singing to the radio
ho ho ho
whoo hoo hoo....

cool rockin song my friend and so cool to listen to
while drivin .. all just fine ..thnx for sharin !!!
michael2
glad you liked. the driving song is one of those class "rock" things.
Vic Holman
I am so picking up on the Built To Spill inspiration. I should of picked up on that on the original.
Ahh, the good old days of road trips!
michael2
don't road trips rule? ahh, simpler times. yeah this is pure Built to Spill on the verses and Pavement on the choruses. loose slop with a hint of sugar. thanks for listening.
rsorensen
mabe a little range life but not a ripoff. i dont think he'd beat you up. i aped wayne coyne's voice with mine anyway so whatever haha.
great job on this. love that chorus and the bridge. i never thought to add a vocal over it. great that you did cuz it sounds really cool. like those outro whoo hoo hoo's too and how they fade out. it's amazing to me how two songs can be the same musically but with a different vocal and melody can be something completely different!
michael2
yeah it's weird that it's the same song huh? i think yours is better though. i tried to steal your idea of a solo after the bridge, but i really wanted a crappy bass heavy fuzz sound and it wasn't sitting right. i worshipped Pavement for years (and I can actually still listen to them - "Here" is one of my very favorite songs in the world), and they pop up in a lot of my songs unconsciously, but this was definitely conscious.
rsorensen
pavement rules. as does BTS. do you have any of Malkmus' solo stuff? it's pretty good.
I keep coming back to listen to this. I really like your chorus.
echoroom
when i heard the opening i thought.... i've heard this before! Really love the chorus - great harmonies and a nice feel to it... never heard Pavement,... will check em out!
michael2
thanks Steve. appreciate the listen, but 1 thing: you need to go out and get "slanted & enchanted" and "crooked rain" immediately. Pavement is a huge influence for me (they are like a blend of the Fall and the Velvet Underground with a kind of sloppy sheen. RSorensen says that their singer is "cavalier."
Moviz
style of this song... good lyrics and sort of seventies light and airy... really nice performance with the vocals /harmonies and all. Love the fuzz guitar as the sound of the car and great bass too, regards M

i was going for indie rock, but the 70's thing is definitely in there as well. so gla you approved.
Great vocals, good music work. I always enjoy your work Mikey, thanks for re-working this tune. Very nice!

thanks so much for listening. I was just checking out Richards take on your song/world view, very nice. Glad you liked this one, it was kind of a toss off, but i still like it. thanks for listening (to the old ones as well, very cool of you).
spitlogic
...yeah. I can definitely see a difference.

I like the lo-fi vibe, and the lovely guitar riff that runs through the verse. The "I'm driving with my girlfriend" line kicks in very sweetly, and that's a great guitar sound under the chorus. Would it be corny to say I can imagine myself listening to this while I'm driving? Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.
SmokeyVW
i keep coming back to this tune. it's a little gem!
thanks
bud
but what I really get is Big Star - you have a certain Alex Chilton vibe cooking here. Charming and delightful.
stratcat
the groove. Good hook. Nice job bro. Respect! (oh and really like the artwork too)
Ibstrat
this from the 1st couple of seconds.Your songs always connect with me.Is that like a Fuzz-face guitar in the background? Cool touch. Yes Pavement is a great band.Malkmus's solo stuff is pretty great too.

bobnisbet
I appreciate hearing the instrumental version (which I could maybe use for a video) and the version with lyrics... Great job!

This is a great version. There's nothing wrong with the Pavement style. Sounds great to me, especially the backing vocals at the end.
Well done
i like the melodies a lot!!
awesome. i dont listen to built to spill but i've heard good things.
12parsecs
i thought i recognized this. rsorensen put his stamp on this one too, didn't he. like this version too. the music is cool, no matter who's singing. nice work!
michael2
for the listen. yeah, i really loved his version (it's probably a better song than mine actually). thanks a bunch. have a go at it if you like, love to hear what you come up with.
estellie
your melody really added something that made those descending scales pop like they didn't before.
I like it. Happy, yes, but in a dizzy, lazy way, which makes it ultra cool.
I'm sure your wife was pleased to hear this ode :)
koike
Nice song, like that walking bass line it sorta adds a homely repetition
to your description of the girlfriend.
sedasia
I like the feel of this song too.
I like the guy oriented lyrics. Very cool!
A fan.
