Description:
I haven't had any free time to work on my tunes lately (although there is another collab in the works) so I thought I'd post this. I put this together while flying back from Warsaw back in April. I needed to stay awake during the 9 hr. flight to get back on my regular sleep schedule so playing around with Garageband seemed like a good way to achieve that.

I thought I'd post what I have so far. If it sparks any ideas for you and would like to work with the file just let me know. Between all of the drum tracks and strings, this has grown to 30+ tracks.

Under all of the tracks is a metronome track. I met a guy while in Poland who is a musician and he gave me some CD's with samples. Oddly enough, of all the synth samples to choose from, I chose the metronome track. Go figure, hehe.

The strings (loops) came from Logic Pro, but this was all done in Garageband.

Wow Mikey! &mdash 05/16/08 - 01:17:49 PM
Beetoven in the ghetto? This is waayyyyy cool! Fabulous way to pass the time on your flight.

Be well friend!

Hehe! &mdash 05/18/08 - 10:49:01 AM
Yea, I don't really know what possessed me to add all the strings to the metronome track, but it was fun to do. Maybe I'll work on this a little more as time allows.

I couldn't really think of a good name for this so I let my silly side take control. The name makes me think of some kind of new veggie (think string beans), or bad baby food (like strained beets), haha. Thanks for listening Mike- always appreciate your support!

Great! &mdash 05/16/08 - 02:21:38 PM
Great strings, beats, background and mix. Really fine piece of work... Happy to hear new tune from you!

Take Care

Thanks Yeman! &mdash 05/18/08 - 10:55:33 AM
It's really depressing to not have the time to work on writing something new. I'm glad you liked this one. I need to finish the collab I'm currently working on- at least I'm doing some actual keyboard playing on that one :) Thanks again for the listen/comment- always appreciated!!

that metronome rocks &mdash 05/16/08 - 04:21:04 PM
cool Mike. Seems to me that this screams hip hop vocals.30 tracks of them!. Excellent mix!

30 more tracks?!? &mdash 05/18/08 - 11:00:14 AM
Oh god, hehe! What's funny about this mix is that I really didn't do anything except for tweaking levels- which with earbuds leaves something to be desired, hehe. When I burned this to CD a few days ago I was surprised at how good it sounded. There's a couple of parts that I'd like to bring the levels up on the strings. Also I'd like to add some of my own from my keyboard. (When time allows, I suppose) Thanks for the listen

Having &mdash 05/16/08 - 07:01:08 PM
been playing with loops recently I've developed a new appreciation of how much patience and skill it involved. I do love the strings on this - it all fits together really well. Great post.

When I'm traveling, loops are really convenient to work with. I always enjoy working with them. At the same time I'm learning how to play piano, so I really want to make my own melodies, ect. I find that loops are great way for me to learn by figuring out what is being played in the loops, then making variations of that. My Yamaha keyboard has some really nice sounding strings, so I'll try adding in my own tracks as time allows. Thanks for the listen and comment Peter!

You really got these string loops funky!!! Very melodic and cool beat!

This was a lot of fun to put together, and a great way to shorten a 9 hr. flight. Glad you liked it!

Awesome &mdash 05/16/08 - 07:55:15 PM
This is really hip-hopping rocking and all.... quite an aural treat! If there is a grand orchestral version of drums and beats, this is a prime example!

Thanks Leon! &mdash 05/18/08 - 11:43:26 AM
Yea, this is a bit different than what I usually do. It was a lot of fun to work with those loops. We'll see if this progresses into something more. Thanks for listening and commenting- means a lot to me! I'm glad you liked it!

I wonder... &mdash 05/18/08 - 11:53:40 AM
..what the guy sitting next to me thought, tho :P I would catch him out of the corner of my eye looking at my computer screen, but he never asked what the heck it was that I was working on. I hope you have a safe trip to NY! Thanks for listening and commenting!!

I can see &mdash 05/17/08 - 06:57:20 AM
this working as a tv or cinema soundtrack. Sounds very professional - great changes - those 4 minutes went very quickly - great listen.
Cheers

Same thoughts here :) &mdash 05/18/08 - 11:49:06 AM
I almost posted this under the "Soundtrack" genre, but chickened out, hehe. I'm glad the changes sounded ok to you. That's usually the hardest part for me when working with loops. I'm glad you took the time to listen and comment Len. Means a lot to me!

Different for you mate! This is a wonderful piece, classical hip hop?! This could d o with some great rapping, Spitlogic springs to mind. Nice work mike... look forward to hearing this when it's done (though it sounds great as is)

Thanks Steve! &mdash 05/18/08 - 12:13:12 PM
This is different for me, I agree. That trip to Poland was the first time I'd actually been in Europe (other than a 6hr. layover in Heathrow). I was fortunate enough to see some of Warsaw before leaving. I think being there inspired me to put this together. (Old World vs. the present) The guy I met there produces rap music (in Polish) and he gave me a CD. I had listened to that before starting on this project, hence the collision here ;P I wondered about someone rapping on this but think that there might be too many changes for that to happen. Spitlogic was one of many that did come to my mind as well. Thanks again Steve! Always nice to have you listen and comment!

Is this the JamPack that Mac offers?

Anyway, what a CLEAR mix. I'm really diggin the "thumps".

They almost have an explosion quality.

REALLY cool Mike.

Thanks! &mdash 05/19/08 - 02:49:14 PM
To be honest, I'm not sure about the loops. Because Logic Pro came with so many extras, I'd bet that they are part of a Jam Pack. The drums/beats are also courtesy of Logic Pro. I had copied a bunch of those to my laptop before leaving on that trip. Glad you liked this Chris!

String beats &mdash 05/22/08 - 10:19:23 AM
I have a fourteen hour plan ride in my near future, now I know what to do! Tatally diggin the per action in this, and the cellos too, Mikey! I prolly should have put my last tune in "other" genre - I like other, stuff! I like toward the end when the entire string section was taken to challenge. I guess I liked the whole thing, huh... Great work! Thanks for the freebie! Macca

14hr flight? &mdash 05/22/08 - 12:39:00 PM
Wow, I thought I was gonna crawl out of my skin on a 9hr. flight! I hope you do use the time to work on some projects. At any rate, you'll wonder where the time went, hehe! Thanks for the comment and support- really appreciate that!

And, nice of you to mention the ending on this. That took quite a bit of "scratching me head" to figure out something that would work. Song endings can be really challenging sometimes.

Have a safe trip and I'll look forward to hearing some new tracks from you when you return!

well... &mdash 05/22/08 - 02:40:54 PM
don't know how you understood anything that i said, since i misspelled everything and, w/ the help of spell check - i give...

but what i really came back to say was that i'd been listening to this a bit more and wanted to comment that i like the separation on this too. like how the placement filled the stage. imaging is an important element of producing and i wish that folks gave more attention to it.

thanks again, m-d

Hehe! &mdash 05/23/08 - 08:24:43 AM
Let me just say that I've had the same problem with spelling- with ya on that one, haha! Plus I have two daughters that have given me the opportunity (on many occasions) to do some deciphering, so I've had some practice at it!

As for the sound separation, it's amazing what panning will do for the sound stage. Good old RC Andrews gave me that little tip a while ago. (dang, I wish he was still around here)

Wonderful : ) &mdash 05/27/08 - 05:53:36 PM
It does have a bit of that Eastern European soundtrack feel to it. That's the really cool thing about MJ's - you get to collab with people from other countries, share music and ideas... one of the good things about technology and the internet. : ) We are all better for the exchange.

Have a happy week. : )

WOW - Mikey, this is incredible! I don't know how I missed this the first time through, but so glad I'm hearing it right now. The complexity of this is remarkable, and it's so completely interesting from start to finish. This is SO GOOD! (Download!!)

Those are very kind words Karen! Having so much uninterrupted time on the flight let me experiment with layering the loops to try and make things more interesting. I'm really glad you liked this. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!
