Keywords:

Description:
Off key vocals, heavily distorted bass guitars and really bad drums. Another typical song sketch.

One of these days I want to make the time to sing in tune and maybe even practice before I hit the record button, but until that day, you're stuck with this signature sound of mine.

My beloved wife, who often blows my mind on the hour, did something rather spectacular the other day. I asked, "What cloud did you fall from?" Instant lyric idea. I wrote it down on my note pad and then came up with some more lyrics while I was at a stop light. Monday night I had a melody that I thought I'd try out. Tonight I have the house to myself so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I really need more vocal parts, but for me, it's the instant gratification I'm seeking, so I don't have the patience to make it happen tonight. Like any of my song sketches, this GB file is available for anyone who wants it. Preferably a singer or a musician and not another chimney sweep.

Thanks for listening.

Lyrics:
I'M WONDERING WHICH CLOUD YOU FELL FROM
AND HOW'D YOU LAND ON ME?
I HOPE YOU DIDN'T HURT YOUR WING
I'LL TAKE YOU HOME
I'LL COMFORT THEE

TWISTING FALLING TO THE FLOOR
SOMEHOW PUSHED OUT FROM HEAVEN'S DOOR
TO THE EARTH
A QUICK DESCENT
WITH ONE WING BROKEN
ONE WING BENT

(The concept was based on the idea of an angel falling from heaven accidentally and no one up in heaven noticed her disappearance. I caught her and tried to keep her for myself, hoping they wouldn't come searching for her because she makes the best salsa in the world)

Hardware:
black and scratchy Hondo 2 bass guitar, RAT pedal, a red pick for Lavalamp (cut from a credit card), Samson mic, Ampeg bass amp, Tapco usb link (as if any of this matters) - I'm just having a good time - please don't take me seriously.

Software:
GB4

of inspiration.

I like the groove from black & scratchy. I'm still amazed how you can get electric guitar sound. must be some high fretting huh?

some good spicey salsa of a song

I Love My Black and Scratchy! &mdash 05/16/08 - 10:05:00 PM
Thanks Vic. I'm really having fun just stripping things back to a simple bass line and some big rat infested bass leads. I play the bottom string on the bass rather high on the neck as you guessed. I mic the bass amp and barely put any effect on the tracks (2 tracks - one left, and one... uh, right). The rat pedal makes a rich enough sound to my ears. Tom Wounded's 2 guitar track playing has obviously influenced me.

Now I want to try to play the drums like Vic Holman, the most under rated drummer at MacJams!

Man, you are such a romantic, aren't you - that's so sweet. The bass riff is really catchy, and the vox are fine man (love the harmonies) - need a bit more eq and reverb mainly.

Never was a woman so loved!

Romantic? Guilty as charged. The way I see it is simple, if I stop chasing my amazing wife, someone else will.

What else would a guy do on his music night?

I like this dark bass riff that developed. This song could've ended up too cheesy and poppy if the bass didn't sound so dark. How 'bout that sizzling lead of mine, huh? LOL!

Thanks Steve. I'm still trying to figure out the EQ levels on my vox. I didn't want to use too much reverb and in the end, I didn't use enough.

You have a very cool voice if you'd ask me. Reminds me of the singer in the band Cake. Laid back and cool.
And those guitars are way cool man. For a sketch this sounds pretty tasty to me. Cool lyrics:)

Cake For Everyone &mdash 05/17/08 - 06:32:04 AM
I hear the very first words of each verse just slightly off key. I sang the vocals at my studio (office) and decided to send it to my laptop at home before posting it. When I got home I noticed it and I didn't feel like driving back to the office when I was already comfy in the house ALONE for the first time in weeks! I worked on the rest of the mix and posted it any way.

I guess that's what you get from a laid back cool guy like me!

Thanks for the kind words. I dig Cake.

it's different from your other songs,I feel, a bit less uptempo, but tenser, more dramatic. The bass line had a good pulse of its own. Beautiful fuzz sound for the rest. I like the bridge and your german sherpherd ghost backing vox trick works again.

Glad you like the buzz.

Love the story you wrote above. I hope my Cherokee will inspire me in our kitchen one day. Dutch kitchen that is! It is so good to hear your voice on top of some layers of distorted tears and mellow bass. I digged the bass-line a lot...go figure;-p

Hey Marc,

I had your love story in the back of my mind when I posted this one. It's a similar story for both of us from our similar perspectives.

I'm just as happy as I can be for you. There aren't enough Dutch/Cherokee love scenes these days. I'm glad to see you have plans for one in the kitchen. I hope something's always cookin' in the kitchen!

Very cool track &mdash 05/17/08 - 01:57:56 PM
I think its the imperfections that make it great, it gives it a live feel which does always sound better then polished pop. Rock is not my genre however I could listen to this time and again because above comment. Esp like the description about the angel falling out of heaven and you keeping her esp since she makes the best salsa in the world, lol, very funny. Well done Bob, its great as it is.

Keith, it's no lie. My wife makes the best everything, salsa is just one of my faves. Her guacamole is legendary.

I'm hoping all this talk about her hasn't alerted the hungry folks in Heaven. They might come looking for her!

Love that gritty guitar riffage Bob.

Great retro sound....like some of the mid-60's Garage-Punk featured on Rhino Records' old "Nuggets" Box Set. I LOVE it!

Great photo too!

Be well friend!

I'm glad you like my guitar sound. When I used to play live, I never got tired of that RAT sound. It's just the right effect on any instrument.

A band with no guitarists and
Only two bass players...

Hey, in your last song I told you I like your non-mushiness and now you go and get all angelic. But the music still rocks so I guess I'll forgive it. Seriously this has a great sound including the slightly off-key vocals.

I like your philosophy about continuing to pursue her after you already got her. We can all learn from that.

I loved that comment you made on my last song. I try hard to avoid typical poetic choices. I figured the falling on top of me idea would meet that rule... I guess I over did it!

Never stop chasing! You have to teach your kids how to be romantic otherwise they'll grow up weird and won't want to take care of you and mom when you guys finally get too old to romp around crazy in love.

Cool start.

Isn't it great when you get the place to yourself for "music night"? It's probably a good thing it doesn't happen more often ... or nothing else would ever get done : >

Obviously, this needs more lyrics. I've got a few ideas I tried to pass along to you, strictly as some possibilities, but your e-mail button says it's disabled. Let me know if you want them.

I'm all for immediacy. This is very cool, dark, moody, kinda Cramps-like in a way. And I always love the RAT... I am wondering what you use for a mic? Your vox are always quite muffled with very little high end punch. I think you might be able to do an EQ fix, but think the mic is probably the culprit.

(feel free to cut past & print to show your wife for proof that you DO really need to buy that mic you've been waiting for...;-))
