Description:
Here, then, is some blues, based on Feter's original track. Thanks to Feter for providing the soundbed, the inspiration, and the whole concept of the House of Blues. Feter, you give so much of your time, your talent, and your self to this place (and to all of us who are part of this place), and you deserve deep bows and appreciation. Hope you enjoy this, and sorry it took so long! Peace.

Lyrics:
I’m Gonna Lose This Game Again

You put me through the mill
You left me up the creek
You dragged my name right through the mud now
You left me good as dead
You turned my sunny day to blue

I don’t know how or when
But I’m going to lose this game again

I curse the day we met
I want you more than that
I hope you disappear, but baby, please come back
You’ve got to go away before I end up on my knees

Here comes the bitter end
And I’m going to lose this game again

You stole my everything
And what you didn’t need you broke and tossed away
You’ve got the angel lips
But the Devil sings
In every word you say

It’s too late to pretend
And I’m going to lose this game again

I’m going to set you straight
I’m going to put my foot right down
Show you the door
I’ve had it up to here
I haven’t got no room for more

I don’t know how or when
But here comes the bitter end
It’s too late to pretend
And I’m going to lose this game again

Glad you like all the messing around I did with your original track. The speeding up came about because I was working on the song away from the computer for a couple of weeks, and when I sat down and listened to your track again, I realized that I had speeded the whole track up in my head. When I sang more slowly to match the original tempo, some of the lines sounded a bit strained, so I went for the all out approach and this is what happened! Happy you enjoyed this one, my friend, and once again, thanks for original idea. It was fun. Cheers, dude. Peace.

Great &mdash 05/17/08 - 06:00:14 PM
additions to Feter's original track David - Love the guitar work and your vocals sound very solid, smooth and flowing. I'm not a big fan of blues but I am really impressed with the work you've done on this. Good stuff.

Thanks for the nice words about the vocals. Blues is not really my genre, either. That was one of the reasons I enjoyed the challenge so much. It took me out of my comfort zone a bit and pushed me to do something different. My wife was really surprised when she heard me working on this! In a way, this took me back to my early days playing guitar. I used to play blues riffs (including the one I'm playing in this song!) for hours. It was good to revive those musical muscles a little! Thanks again for stopping by. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers. Peace.

Great blues &mdash 05/17/08 - 06:14:47 PM
singing.... seems you found a new vibrato LOL. This is a great version with excellent lyrics and guitar and as I said, so well sung, cheers M

New vibrato! &mdash 05/17/08 - 10:16:21 PM
I love that! I think I'm losing parts of my voice rather than finding them actually! Glad you liked it though, and thanks for your kind words about the singing. This was a lot of fun to work on. Feter really knows how to start things moving, doesn't he? Just been listening to your new version of your first post - very cool. Here's to another year! Thanks, my friend. Peace.

deep in the roadhouse blues! Nicely done, Dave. This moves and grooves. Love your vocals... great stuff... and that guitar lead... yassir!

Glad you liked it. Roadhouse blues indeed. The blues for me (growing up in Dublin, and later living in London) has always been about live bands in smoke-filled bars, working the beer-addled crowd into a frenzy! I never really listened to blues on record (oops, showing my age...) until much later. So as soon as I started working on this, I immediately had that kind of vibe in mind. I'm delighted to think that some of that came across! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to listen and comment. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Great job,

This is (hopefully!) one of those tracks that makes you tap your foot, and hopefully grin at the over the top lyrics! I had a blast doing this, and I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it. By the way, your latest is excellent. I've been singing "I don't see the light" over and over ever since I listened to it! Nice one. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Down n' dirty blues with tongue placed firmly in cheek!

Cool lyrics. Production excellent as per usual. (Guys like you give guys like me a standard to aspire to!)

Great fun!

Be well my friend!

Glad you enjoyed this. Tongue in cheek, indeed. As soon as I started working on lyrics for this, I knew I had to dig out a few hoary old cliches. If you're not going to go over the top, then why get off the couch? I'm a fan of bands that can carry off those apparently earnest but exaggerated lyrics (Did someone say AC/DC?) and I hope it worked here. Really enjoyed your latest, by the way - a true love song. Thanks for stopping by, man. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Weird! &mdash 05/18/08 - 02:18:04 AM
Really weird to hear you sing this stye, but you really pull it off David! Great vocal (and harmonies!) You sound a bit like Elvis on this. Great stuff man!

[ Reply to This ]
I presume you &mdash 05/18/08 - 06:37:23 PM
mean Elvis Costello? Thanks for stopping by, man. Glad you dig the vocals. Yes, I can imagine it's weird, but weird in a good way, right? Right? Steve, where are you going...? Hee hee. Thanks again, dude. Peace.

Glad you liked this one. It was a pleasure to work with Feter's music. Thanks for the nice words about the guitars. That slightly screechy, kind of iffy solo was the 45th take, I think! At least I'm persistent! Thanks again for stopping by and listening. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

This rocks Dave!

you really put a hot texas style shuffle into this. everything is right in the pocket and the mix sounds really great!

Your vocals sound great and comfortable here as well.

Hot Texas style, by way of Dublin and Minnesota! Thanks for the nice words about the mix. I wanted to get the live bar-band vibe, but not drown out Feter's original track, so it took a while to get the balance right. Thanks also for the nod on the vocals. As usual, I don't think my singing sounds too good, but I reckoned it was worth a shot! Thanks for listening, dude. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Yeah, I thought what could be more blue than wanting what you shouldn't have? Mix that with a little doomed inevitability, and you've got instant misery! Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoyed this. Cheers. Peace.

Glad you enjoyed it. This was fun to do, and really different from what I usually do. That, of course, is one of the great things about this place - not only the exposure to lots of different genres, but also the opportunity to dabble in other styles. Feter's very cool original track brought me back to a musical place I haven't visited for a long time, and it was a very cool trip. Thanks again to Feter for the idea and the track! And thanks to you for stopping by and listening. It's much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Delighted it got you going, and thanks for the comment on the singing. Not sure how bluesy it sounds, but it's what I got! As for the guitar, thank you. Honestly, I'm still not really happy with the lead, but then again, I never am! Glad you stopped by. Cheers. Peace.

Glad you liked it. Yeah, I ended up with something a bit faster than Feter's original, but speeding it up worked pretty well, I think, and then I liked the contrast between the acoustic sound and the rest of the instruments. I experimented with adding effects to Feter's track, but it just sounded weird! Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening. Cheers. Peace.

Yo ,Hi Five &mdash 05/20/08 - 11:40:55 AM
Slap me some skin what a rocked out version of Feters track this has been turned into..and the production~woohoo, that is my achilles heel.Rocked and Bluesed out.....I'm burbling now, but this just goes to show how versatile the blues are and a poke in the eye(or ear)of those who say the blues are:
a) boring
b)all the same
c)easy cos they're only three chords

They, the blues that is, may have a simplistic structural foundation ,but there is no limit to what you can build on that foundation .Hats off to you sir.

I loved your take on Feter's track, and I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Yeah, you hit the nail on the head - the blues is rooted in a basic structure, but there's so much you can do with it. I think what I've done is pretty straightforward, but there are so many ways I could have gone with it. I'm just grateful to Feter for sending me in this direction! Thanks for stopping by. Your kind words are much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Cool vox David &mdash 05/20/08 - 05:17:31 PM
Vocals sound a bit like early Clapton (Cream era) - guitar sounds great, but I won't embarass you by making the same comparison :) Nice blues, nice driving/rolling rhythm.

Cool take on Feter's original.

Thanks Neil &mdash 05/21/08 - 07:08:54 AM
and what a cool comparison! Glad you like the rhythm - I really wanted that driving boogie feel, and it's fun to play that bassline (apart from the callous on my thumb!) Thanks for listening, my friend. Glad you enjoyed this one. Cheers. Peace.

I haven't followed the blues challenge... &mdash 05/21/08 - 08:07:32 AM
...and I don't know what the starting point is... But I really enjoy the wit in this, I love the electric guitar playing, and I like the sparing use of the backing vocals...

A lot of fun... Brings something neat to the blues lyric conventions...

Glad you enjoyed it. Particularly happy you liked the tongue in cheek aspect. I know the blues are supposed to be, well, blue, but I love the over the top, pile it on approach to misery that some blues songs take. I once watched a blues band in London where the singer sang a long song about how he had the blues because he had too many women! Cracked me up. Thanks for stopping by and listening, man. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
