Lyrics
When you first came
You wouldn’t say your name
I had to wonder while I watched you sleep
I'm not so tough
You knew it well enough
I liked the game
But never played for keeps

I never could find love in America
When for so long love lived so far away
You’re so, very, very, very, very, Veronika
You’re the one who helped me find my way

You were the one
Who said it's more than fun
For lovers lying in the summer time
You told the truth
I wonder how you knew
That one day I’d have to make you mine

I never lack for words, but this is one time
I need some one to help me find my way
Your so very, very, very, very Veronika
Those are all the words I have to say

Don't ask mountains why
They have to stand so high
Just take each step they ask
For you to take

You never know
Where the river goes
Just let it take us
As we float away

I never lack for words, but this is one time
I need some one to help me find my way
Your so very, very, very, very Veronika
I’ll always want her,
I’ll always need her
I’ll always love her every single day.

(Bonus lyrics - written but not used)

I may look strong
I've been alone so long
I forgot what it was like to show I'm weak

Then I found you
It's crazy, but it's true
I think you really knew me in a week

Like i'm in a broken hearts bar
Drinking my beer after a break up, this is just the song
that would make me cry! Plaintive... heartfelt... Vocals are
good, but the second voice would have been more
appropriate only in certain phrases and not needed
thoughout the whole song. It will have more impact that
way. The background music is simple, straightforward,
pleasantly un-embellished. If you were to release this as
a record (and I'd buy it!), the instrumental background will
need a major touch-up, though.

Thanks!
All very good comments. My wife will tell ya -- I ain't perfect, but I try. Defintely needs polish, but I'm pushing my self-taught skills to the max. I agree it might be better not to do harmony all the way through. I did it throughout partly to cover perceived imperfections in my voice, and partly because I'm just amazed I'm able do do it. Singing in harmonywith GB is so much easier than doing it live since I can manipulate track levels during recording, pushing the dominant melody way down. I can hardly do it all in a live situation. I've never really played keyboards before, so doing the bass with MIDI keyboard and getting the rhythm just right was a real challenge. Really enjoyed making it.

from the heart
Virgil already made some very good observations about
this tune, so there's not much more I can add.

The mix sounded a bit dark and muddy at times. Were you
at the bottom of your vocal range? This song might sound
better in the next key up, D major.

Also, please post lyrics if possible. What I caught was
good, but it's always nice to be able to read lyrics on the
song page too.

You've got a good voice and it's good that you're using it
now, along with getting into that keyboard! I look forward
to hearing more.

Sweet
Your voice is nothing to be ashamed of, and the guitars
sound good.

But, eh, the bass and drums are a bit wimpy. Maybe for
the next version?
