Song Description

Smile

-- Mary Jane

Lyrics:
Smile For Me Now

I take your hand
And we walk
By the stream

Reach for the sky
Touch a star
Touch my face

Stop asking how
Simply smile
Carry on

Trails in the sand
As we talk
Of our dream

Stop asking why
Who we are
What's our place

Smile for me now
In a while
We'll be gone

Smile for me now
In a while
We'll be gone

This track grabbed me immediately it started with the great drum sound. Love the vocals - really effective. Apart from the brilliant production on this, it's just a great song. You are so creative Bill, never know what's coming next.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

What a grabber - &mdash 05/23/08 - 07:24:39 AM
This tune is so infectious - it really pulls you in with a big smile. Fantastic production - so simple and so funky - like a new Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer thing.

5/4 &mdash 05/23/08 - 07:59:13 AM
Hi Bud

I adore 5/4, so I decided to do something quirky. No idea if it's actually possible to dance to this. The rhythm of the vocals was arranged so that the echoes wouldn't stomp on other words any more than necessary.

You would not believe the pain it was to sing this beast. I did five takes and no take was entirely usable. I was counting it out trying to come in at the right time with each phrase, and got it wrong a lot! I had to pick and choose to find the two best phrases from each of the five takes and piece it together.

Well... &mdash 05/23/08 - 01:00:05 PM
...who is the fake id, anyway...?

;)

Love the shift. And the build within the B section is subtle and effective.

I very rarely make suggestions, but the echo in this tune reminds me a bit of when I played lead in a psychodelic band. Of course it's all your call...but I remember being given a tip that I might want to try doing the echo at the end point of a phrase instead of as a general effect through the entire tune (I was really into the delay pedal). It was a very nice change and from there I would apply the effect at different points with varying intensity and other times not at all.

I bring this up not as a criticism of what you've got (which I like a lot), but rather as a suggestion that might enhance the tune. Might be wrong, though. That HAS happened before...

Anyway...the tune's a trip and the lyrics are deep. Very much so...

Reducing the echo to only the end note is interesting. I might try that. I wonder of tape echo with ducking would acheive a similar effect as a volume pedal?

On the other hand, I really enjoy full-out tape echo, and the challenge of creating a melody so that it isn't reduced to a hash once the echo is added. It's hard to do (for me anyway). I also find that 5/4 with a 4-beat echo creates a really interesting effect, that is both reassuring and surprising at the same time. The echo appears right where you expect the next phrase or fragment, so it's reassuring, but then one beat later the real phrase shows up: surprise! (It simulates "perceptual distortion" perhaps?)

"To know someone here or there with whom you can feel there is understanding in spite of distances, or thoughts unexpressed that can make this life a garden." - Goethe You found your soul mate, Mary Jane. You are so blessed. : ) I love your song dear friend. : ) And I pray that all your dreams come true. : )

It's all there: the catchy hooks, the "can't get it out of your head" haunting chorus, and unique sound!

gb, really? &mdash 08/29/08 - 11:05:36 AM
you're doing this all in garageband? wow! you are doing wonderful things with this program. very original progression... especially in the choruses. i dig! do you have musical training/background? you make it sound subtle, but i hear some complex musical elements happening.
