Description:
As a teenager back in the Stone Age, I had the marvelous experience of small local college and a wonderfully resonant concert hall virtually at my disposal whenever I felt like using it. I would often sneak in in the late aftenoon or early on a Saturday or Sunday morning to play the concert grand that occupied the bare stage and empty hall. The audience was only the vacant seats and echoing spaces all around me. Later, as an adult, I was to play several concerts there. I still remember, though, the feeling I had while improvising the sounds in my head to that empty space and listening to the walls speak back to me, informing me of my next move at the keyboard. ... "Once More...Again" recalls that time. I've "fiddled" with the digital ambiance here to try to replicate that echo-y sound I heard so many years ago. I hope you will enjoy my nostalgic meandering.

Beautiful &mdash 05/25/08 - 02:35:45 PM
Well, it's lovely as always, and somehow you manage to do a marvelous job in conveying the exact image you describe, playing in a a vast hall, without audience, only for one's own pleasure. Beautiful.

Elegant piano piece. Wonderfully composed and masterfully played as usual. I love your feelings while playing, each note speaks... Amazing!

Take Care

I can see it Paul... &mdash 05/25/08 - 02:42:28 PM
The auditorium stage... the Steinway grand... and the incomparable Mr. Page finding ephemeral bliss between pedal points and arpegiated chords. Love the ever so slight harmonic shifts - that ponder but never quite dare to leave the tonal structure. Deep yearning and reclamation. Well done!

Enjoy? &mdash 05/25/08 - 04:24:41 PM
I'm mesmerised at the lovely sound of this lovely melody and your playing; it's so emotional in many ways, both strong and tender. This really is beautiful ( I wish there was another word to describe it, but there isn't), regards M

Hi Paul.... &mdash 05/26/08 - 03:15:53 AM
I think that your little experiment with reverb has worked very well. The echo/sustain has added to the piece in just the right way, and has succeeded (to me) as far a your description and desire.

I once played organ in a masonic lodge. That was just plain eerie. Even playing pop tunes didn't lift the atmosphere.

Take care.

Paul

The piano touch &mdash 05/26/08 - 06:38:01 AM

This is a special sound ,I think , when a pianist trained to acoustic piano playing plays a digital keyboard .
The digital keyboards have less range in volume contrast especialy in the low volume , very soft playing is harder to manage with them .
The result here, is a wonderfull sound bringing a memory of classical
piano playing with a modern sound .
And the sound is a big part of what makes something new ... (long debate possible here hahaha ... )
Thank you Paul and bravo .

Beautiful playing - whatever knobs you tweaked you did it right Paul. And it's so much nicer this way - no shuffling audience feet, sniffing noses, muted coughs. Just you and your gorgeous flowing music. A very classical feel to this piece. Great job, thanks for sharing!

lounging with romantic thoughts &mdash 05/26/08 - 10:46:54 AM
Love the way you waft between the romantic period and the light jazzy modern style here... your control of tempo and dynamics are so fluid here, really a delight to listen to. And after reading your description (and before I hit play) I was worried about you turning up the reverb too far, but you gave just the perfect amount of presence, keeping it from getting muddy. Excellent recording work here!

Once More Again &mdash 05/26/08 - 11:07:57 AM
Paul, you are such a master! You've been so prolific lately, and this is one of my most faves of yours so far. Your touch on that keyboard is masterful - incredible key changes - Beetoven has NOTHING on you - really, I'm not kidding. Why aren't you on a world tour playing your music for the world? I ask you, WHY??

The acoustics of a room... &mdash 05/26/08 - 11:51:37 PM
...are often measured in in the quality of sound that returns to you, but when that sound is intercepted and thankfully returned, it is a more meaningful return. And this, I return to you, with my thanks. Terry

Empty seats? &mdash 05/28/08 - 07:47:46 AM
Paul, I think the angels were twirling down the aisles. Your pieces fill me with emotion. So lovely and elegant, so heartfelt and poignant. Not enough words to describe the beauty of it. :-)

There's simply no reason... &mdash 06/10/08 - 06:59:18 PM
...other than your obvious desire to dwell in your high Tibetan monastery, for you not to be playing your pieces in concert halls for real, and having your CD's in the few remaining high traffic display areas in music stores...

You know, my Paul F. Page collection is now fifty-seven pieces, for a total of about three and a half hours of music... I bet I could sit down and listen to it all some quiet Sunday in one go and not come away tired of it...

I continue to think that you are getting the perfect sound out of Ivory, too...

Billy Chopin &mdash 07/04/08 - 10:58:30 PM
This is a lovely piece, Paul. Sort of a Billy-Joel-Meets_Chopin effect. Lots of beautiful ornamentation, but not excessive. Many chord sequences that evoke either Joel or Chopin.

Dynamic contrasts are especially effective in this piece. You're not just a banger, you've got real chops in your fingers and in your head (and your heart!).

The Ivory plug-in sounds very authentic. I have recently decided to abandon NI Akoustik Piano in favor of returning to S. Ivory. I have not been able to use Akoustik Piano ever since I upgraded to OSX.5. I have been in contact with their tech support by e-mail for several months, and we can't seem to get it resolved.

So I was an Ivory man first, and to that I'll return. I have to reinstall it, and buy one of those USB iLok keys for 45.00, but I think it will be worth it.

I said all that to say, that the German Steinway is the first setting that I'm going to check out, once I'm up and running again. What a beautiful, natural, unaffected sound. When I used Ivory in the past, I mostly did the Jazz C7 (Yamaha, I think), and I ignored other presets, thinking I had found "the sound." But I tired of it after awhile, and that's what brought me to Akoustik. But there's a lot more to Ivory than the Jazz C7, and it may very well be that the German Steinway will be my voice of choice. (It rhymes!)

All the best,

John
