blues (356)rock (1068)loud (54)electric (78)12 bar blues (2)greens and blues can be very confusing if you're colourblind (1)
Description:
The first song I ever wrote. It didn't sound like this then!

Same lyrics and melody but without the 16 year old angst ridden whining and out of tune £10 Woolworths guitar (instead we have a 50 year old angst ridden whining and out of tune Fender Strat).

Posted as I need to refer to it on my blog.

Not to be taken too seriously :-)

I could have written songs like that when I was 16. Blues? That's stretching things a bit...but not to the song's detriment. really like it. Great solid 70s feel to it. Got a dash of Cream in it.

Nice one squire

Bah... &mdash 05/30/08 - 04:59:30 AM
with lyrics like "I gotta keep going I ain'y gonna stop" I'm not sure you really wanted to write songs like that. Blimey, they are so bad I'm cringing now :-)

Thanks Chas.

Cheers

I'm not &mdash 05/30/08 - 04:54:05 AM
a great blues fan but love your guitar work. Is this meant to be recorded in mono?

All the best - see you in London Tuesday.

I'm not a blues man either &mdash 05/30/08 - 05:40:34 AM
but at 16 the three chords of a 12 bar in A was the only thing I could play. I couldn't even play enough chords for Streets of London ;-) No wonder I never got the girls......

It wasn't meant to be in mono but there is no panning or clever EQ work so if it sounds mono then it's a happy accident.

Thanks for listening Peter.

See you Tuesday

Sounds very late 60s ... &mdash 05/30/08 - 05:05:30 AM
... including the mix. Mono and hot - just like the early heavy brit bands used to do. At first I was concerned that the mix was a bit less than ideal, but it fits into the times really well.

Good post!

Very cool Dick,

Late 60s &mdash 05/30/08 - 05:55:54 AM
was when it was written! Pity I couldn't play like this then!

Do you know I had no idea it sounded mono? It was supposed to be a one take sound. I'm not even sure the drum loop varies.

I did it about 2 years ago for a bit of fun on a 16 track Zoom and left it raw with mistakes. I've only resurrected it as part of the "blog first song" question.

Thanks Neil :-)

Dick - &mdash 05/30/08 - 05:08:40 AM
you'll go straight to hell playing this sort of music.

Reminds me of Cream a bit, I prefer this more driving style of blues to the slowsr stuff. Excellent track, - and written when you were sixteen ! - I didn't write my first piece of music until I was about thirty.

Really enjoyed this one, nice earthy sound to it and a nice edge on the guitar.

Best wishes,

John.

Well Dick &mdash 05/30/08 - 07:08:07 AM
I hate blues but I love a bit of 50 year old angst ridden whining. Aaaaah ...

PS I don't suppose you've still got the Woolworths guitar?

[ Reply to This ]
Ta... &mdash 05/31/08 - 11:58:54 AM
No I sanded it down, rubbed boot polish into the wood as I'd heard some famous guitarist had done that and then realised the guitar was a heap of poo regardless of what I did.

I lost it sometime in 1970 along with my sanity ....

Well at least you didn't do what I did and cover a cheapie Jazz Bass knockoff with brown and white nylon fur.

Anyway, I forgot to mention your vocals are fabulous on this.

16 or 50? It's weord but I prefer to be 50. At least I deal with my angst a bit better these days and I don't have to show ID in a pub :-)

Great sound &mdash 05/30/08 - 11:07:44 AM
on this retro or not. You had a Woolworths guitar too? LOL So did I and guitarist used to come up and ask me what guitar it was, the sound was so good through my Sound City amp. Love the guitar on this one though and the vocals are great too, cheers M

Didn't we all &mdash 06/01/08 - 07:26:28 AM
have Woolworths guitars then? It was a specific make which I can't remember. The strings were about an inch above the fret board and it wasn't until a guitarist friend tried to play it that I found out it wasn't just me who couldn't do a barre chord. That's when I got a new guitar :-)

Thanks Maurice!

cool that you have remembered it after the years. Yeah, kinda like Cream, but maybe a bit more rockin.

You are really dangerous with that wah pedal, Dick. A cool wake up song for me this morning.

Yes Vic,, my first song &mdash 06/01/08 - 07:31:16 AM
Somewhere I still have the school book I wrote the lyrics in. They truly are dreadful though so I ought to lose it!

Thanks for the comments and noticing the wah :-)

For 50 year old Angst, &mdash 05/30/08 - 01:39:54 PM
This ain't half bad Dick. And I didn't notice the Strat out of tune even once !

Great track my friend, and yes it does have the 60's Cream sound that I've always loved. I just wish you'd posted the lyrics with it for the deaf half of the crowd here at MJ. One of the pains of being an old rocker is being a deaf rocker.

Thanks for posting this one Dick, it's a cool ride man,

Lyrics? &mdash 06/01/08 - 07:35:30 AM
Ed the lyrics are so bad that I'm ashamed to give them any more exposure!

I thought at the time that maybe I could have been another John Mayall as his lyrics were always pretty weak to imo but I missed the bit about talent :-)

Thanks Ed, comments much appreciated.

really good to me - like a raw live band sound. I think it's a great song with a really catchy riff - could have been a hit then. Great solo. Enjoyed this. Takes me right back when.

...big time...you are tweakin' out some naaaaaaaasty notes from that "out of tune" Strat...man...

Not to sound whiny...but there's a good chance a lot of us are gonna be singin' these blues (at least here in the USA) in the not so distant future...

Where DID all that money go, anyway.....?

...the king of rock 'n' roll, Dick. This is a terrific number whether it's of an age gone by or right here and now. Your vocal is strong and the heavy beat and wonderful lead improvs just sail with such an authentic sound. Wow. No need to apologize for this. It's great.
Peace.

Great lead guitar going on here - wish I could get my Strat to wail like that! The bass was nice and powerful and reminded me of something from the British blues revival. Still singing great at 50 too!
