Keywords:
progressive (120)rock (1079)guitar rock (7)
Description:
A simple tune that I knocked out in one day. It's my first song that includes me actually playing an instrument, in this case, guitar. It's a little rough around the edges, but I wanted to see if I could get some feedback, then maybe go fix it up. And, of course, I am humbled by some of the guitar artistry here at MJ. So, with all due humility, I hope you like my song.

Hardware:
iMac 1.83 GHz, Presonus Firebox, Ibanez JS1000, Boss GT-8

Software:
Logic Express 7, Audacity, one Zebra 2 plugin

That's midi bass. &mdash 06/01/08 - 03:39:18 PM
Taking someone's suggestion (I wish I could remember who it was), I have two bass tracks, panned -12 and +12, one EQed to high end, the other to low. And thanks!

Nice &mdash 05/31/08 - 10:26:21 PM
Very interesting composition. I enjoyed the beat, and the synth instruments sounded very authentic. Definitely had a great groove to it, and the overlaying guitar kept it going throughout, along with the other instrumental changes. I also liked the variety of drum loops and how they continued to change and fill certain parts. Overall I thought it was very well executed, but for improvement purposes could use a stronger melody. Possibly a vocal track or a second lead guitar to direct the song in a specific direction, so that the audience doesn't feel the music is repetitive or lacking significance. This may be against what you were aiming for, but its only a suggestion. Great work, I'm looking forward to hearing more!

Much appreciated. &mdash 06/01/08 - 03:41:12 PM
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. It is repetitive, and certainly lacks any kind of significance. Just a sloppy jam, really ... an experiment. My next proggy piece will be more progressive and highly significant (he boasted modestly).

"Accomplished"? Heh. Yeah, well, I'm a little rusty (must ... practice ... more). And there are some real monsters that post at MJ. But I did leave the solo parts a little sloppy on purpose (he said, in all seriousness). It was two one-take solos with two settings (Sloppy 1 and Sloppy 2), and I cut them up a bit for effect. Glad you liked it!

Very nice .. &mdash 06/01/08 - 11:06:46 AM

.. everything works really well .. drums, guitars and particularly keys .. like the overall vibe .. certainly progressive, kinda Rush-like I hear too .. and even that "Nightrider"-esque ARP worked pretty darn well in context. Enjoyed it, good mix too.

good sound, and a dark feeling. interesting key changes. I also think that it could be more melody and harmony changes.
nice job

Yeah, of course you're right. I didn't put much time into this. I was just so happy to be able to record my guitar that I rushed it out. My next proggy tune (I hope) will be more interesting.

I really enjoyed this piece. It reminds me of the German band Dreamscape a lot : )

Hey, Kori. &mdash 07/18/08 - 03:19:03 AM
Thanks for listening and commenting. I'm not familiar with Dreamscape. I'll have to check them out.
