Keywords:
Presenting (1)gregd's peculiar audio tour! (1)Watch him abuse and manipulate recordings of keyboard instruments! (1)
Description:
At the end of April, I wrote a short duet for piano and marimba. Then in May, my musical energy went into producing a bucket full of electro-acoustic variations of the original recording. This is a short edit of the variation series. The whole piece is about 28 minutes long.

In each variation, every sound you hear is an alteration of the original duet. No new sounds, synths, or audio files are used.

Holy mutilations, Batman! &mdash 06/03/08 - 07:07:11 PM
There's some serious audio maltreatment going on here. Way cool.

Yep. It's out in left-field, that's for sure. Thanks for stopping in and commenting, I appreciate it. I'm toying with submitting this to the San Francisco Tape Music Society's annual "recital", which seems to be more of a mix tape played in a concert hall on very fine speakers. I like the idea, personally. It sounds quite absurd.

Most of this series is an exercise in compression. I found there was a wealth of sounds in the "quiet" parts of this song, and by compressing these sections the sounds showed up. The rest is a lot of effects applied to get something like phrasing and a feeling of musicality to the whole thing.

Welcome to MacJams, by the way; and thanks for stopping in. Can't wait to hear your music.

Can appreciate &mdash 06/04/08 - 05:12:37 PM
You've got some way out sounds on this. Creative. Weird. And wild. Also, inventive!

yes .... &mdash 06/08/08 - 12:19:48 AM
.. kewl ... can't put my finger on what I want to say the sound that I hear is ... but it reminds me of something for sure ..... maybe it was a very very OLD piano I encountered once ... and the keys just didn't hit their mark the way they were supposed to .... and it came out with that same sort of thumpy sound .... the rest makes me think of those movies where the aliens cause interference with the radio ... Now I'm scared .....

Don't tell . . . &mdash 06/08/08 - 02:27:37 AM
but I do have to phone home every once in a while. You know, standard protocol and all.

Thanks for listening and reminding me to contact the Mothership again.

wow &mdash 06/08/08 - 04:28:14 PM
you got some great stuff out of the quiet end. love that rustling. makes it a little glitchy. very nice (i just realized today that I hadn't heard the mixed version). you really should submit this for the recital/symphonic mix tape).

Thanks Michael &mdash 06/08/08 - 08:34:53 PM
I did send this into the San Francisco Tape Music Collective, along with a suite of piano pieces. The first of the piano pieces is posted here: the Prelude for Chance and Recorded Piano. It'd be a hoot to have it played on a nifty sound system in a big theater. Hopefully maybe . . . .

Thanks for giving this a listen.

I'm in love with this piece... &mdash 07/07/08 - 09:22:20 PM
a) it's genius to put the marimba and piano together like this. it might not have worked as a straight forward piece, but the way you sculpted this was brilliant!
b) I love the scratch/static. makes it sadder some how, like sad memories.
c) and the panning of those scratches/boop boops. undeniable. puts me inside the piece.
c) the piano sounds very warm to me. Makes me love piano all over again.

Wow, Estellie. &mdash 07/08/08 - 05:37:48 PM
Thanks for the high marks. Glad it works for you. I've spent the last few weeks playing with different combinations of the variations. This is the the complete set, but I'm not sure all of them are quite presentable. Nonetheless, like a big family, here it is: rag-tag and all accounted for.

Thanks for stopping in,
-g
