Description:
Here is an acoustic version of the first song I posted here on MJ "With You" This is the way I originally wrote the song and it was fun to go back and actually record it this way.
I didn't spend much time with the mix as you can tell and my backing vocalist sounds an awful lot like me.
Here's to your morning cup.
That painting is an old "a bit crazy" self portrait I did a while back.
Lyrics:
With You
Look deep inside me, and you’ll find
I just can’t get you out of my mind
3 days ago, I seemed alright
Now I’ve been torn apart all night
And I know that it’s not supposed to be
I know it’s hard for others to see
Yeah I don’t care and I know what I should do
Girl I just want to be close to you
I wish I knew the right words to say
Cause I just can’t keep going on this way
So I wait at home for you to call
Yet I wonder if you will at all
And I know that it’s not supposed to be
I know it’s hard for others to see
Yeah I don’t care and I know what I should do
Girl I just want to be close to you
I guess I should tell you the way that I feel
To find out if what we shared was real
And so many problems they stand in our way
But no there’s not gonna stop me today
And I know that it’s not supposed to be
I know it’s hard for others to see
Yeah I don’t care and I know what I should do
Girl I just want to be close to you

Thanks &mdash 06/07/08 - 10:03:04 PM
for the comments Yeman. The vocals are still the most difficult part of recording for me. These came out all right though.
Thanks for listening [ Reply to This ]
This fits well... &mdash 06/07/08 - 12:41:32 PM
It has an unplugged Nirvana feel to it I really enjoyed it thanks for sharing it. [ Reply to This ]
unplugged &mdash 06/07/08 - 10:06:35 PM
Yeah you can almost tell that most of my stuff is heavier just by the way this is written. No if I could only channel more of that Nirvana feel.

really, really good nick. love the passion in those BG vocals and the lead vocal is really well performed. Great playing too, and a really well written song. Found myself singing along to the last chorus on the first listen! Great job man. [ Reply to This ]
yeah &mdash 06/07/08 - 10:09:35 PM
It does feel kinda like a sing along at the end. I ove writing songs at this level and then bringing them to a full band sound. Some of my better stuff comes out this way. I have another one of these I'm going to post next week.
Thanks for the compliments Ridd. [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 06/07/08 - 01:47:01 PM
Nothing but you and your guitar and a whole lot of music and emotion. Some fine vocals, very upfront./.

Thanks Russ. I'm working on letting more emotion through on my vox. They seems to sound better if I can channel the feeling behind the words. [ Reply to This ]

sounds so unusual to me, but nice. It has a haunting feel and folky sounding. I do like it a lot, especially guitars and that unusual vocal melody which has a slight mediaeval sound.Regards M [ Reply to This ]

does have a bit of a haunting feel to it doesn't it? Interesting you mention a medieval sound, I know what you mean now that I listen again. Cool.
I have a few paintings like this, Its been a long time since I've done anything like that. I traded art for music. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for taking the time to listen. It's been fun to cross genres like this. [ Reply to This ]

I like the way the bass add to the original version. I thought of putting an acoustic bass on this version but just decided to keep it plain. I recorded the other one a few years back.
Thanks for checking out both versions Peter.

is a lucky man. I'll stand down :) Thanks for the comp on the vocals, they are my own worst enemy. Anyone can learn to sing ... right?
The only vocals I've actually done live have been a few lines of screaming and rap. This is new.
Thanks Dee

I'm really liking this "unplugged" sound. And especially love both of your voices - they blend amazingly well together. Guitar sounds great - the perfect coffeehouse sound. Great work Nick! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Karen - must be that small Montana town coffee house vibe. Gotta love the backup vox.

the backing vocalist is a better person for it :-) Very mellow beautific vibe. Lyrically compelling as well. Cool artwork [ Reply to This ]

great to hear a tune that goes back to the initial concept. Solid tune, man. [ Reply to This ]

I like the plugged version better - I'm a sucker for loud distortion and drums. This was exactly how I wrote it though.
Thanks for stipping by Vic. [ Reply to This ]
Like it &mdash 06/09/08 - 12:35:57 PM
I Like the guitars and the vocal interplay.
There's something mesmeric about it that I like.
You can drift into it and get lost in it.
Nice one

&mdash 06/21/08 - 09:12:51 PM
That mesmeric thing is the subliminal content I added to ganerate more fans. :) Naw, just a simple song, simple recording. Sometimes less is better. (sounds like a car commercial or something)

Great stuff &mdash 06/11/08 - 08:38:16 PM
It's great to bring a song back to its roots! This is a terrific song, and a great performance. Lovely guitar sound and playing, and the lyrics have a great narrative vibe. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
A cool &mdash 06/19/08 - 09:13:04 AM
laidback sound .....I don't really know Nirvana that well so can't compare but if this is representative then I may check them out.....Now just getting the break with the two guitars ....now that is very english folk rock a la Steeleye Span ...in fact the guitar does have a folk rock feel to it ...great song
'cos it pulls in lots of different directions.

Hi Nick &mdash 06/20/08 - 09:53:35 AM
Well I listened to this version, and then went to your page and listened to the original version. This version has that Coffee House feel to it for sure, with just you and your guitar doing it and you've done an excellent job on it. I like this version, but after listening to your original track, I have to say I liked that track a little better.
Mostly I think it's because the original version has more variation to it and a bigger sound with more depth. I really like the fuller sound for this song.
Mind you, this is some really good song writing, and you vocal comes through crystal clear on both.
So what I'm saying is I like them both, they are very well done.
Thanks for sharing, the effort was worth it.

Excellent! &mdash 06/21/08 - 10:46:36 PM
I really dig the simple but effective chord progression. Fine lyrics and nice vocal delivery. I like the addition of the background vocalist very much.
This works well indeed as a Coffee House submission Nick! KUDOS!
Be well friend! [ Reply to This ]
OOOOOPS! &mdash 06/21/08 - 10:48:11 PM
nice elements &mdash 06/22/08 - 12:38:03 PM
I like the driving droning aspect of this, and your singing on this is quite good. I probably would add an earlier break, and maybe change/build the guitar strumming to be a little more intense as you move to the final stanza to carry it home.

You and you and your guitar &mdash 07/04/08 - 01:44:34 PM
make a great trio. Very cool tuning and technique you have here, Nick. I like it a lot. The picking interlude was just great, so were the backing vocals. All around, a great song for the coffeehouse. I'm glad I finally got here to listen to it! [ Reply to This ]
