Description:
Last weekend, Matt and I posted an invitation in the forums for macjammers to remix The Orbiting song Wake Up . I've really enjoyed hearing the versions that have come out so far and since I've been kind of hamstrung working on new projects because my interface died and I haven't been able to record vocals, I thought I'd have some fun with a remix, too. I used some of the tracks from the original song and added a few more.
This started out as a reggae mix, but I remembered that I had bought the Vocals Jam Pack a while ago. At the time, I found it basically the dumbest Jam Pack Apple has ever released, but it suddenly clicked that it meant that I had rappers on call in my computer, so I played around with adding "Tyson" into the song and kind of liked the results, then I thought I might like to have a background singer, so I put in a call to "Leena," as well. I think they both did good work and I'd hire them again. :-)
What I love about award shows like the Grammys and the Oscars and stuff is that there's almost always some crazy moment where they combine completely improbable artists and songs like, "Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for the first lady of the American theater, Helen Hayes performing 'Like a Virgin' with Three 6 Mafia." I think this might have ended up being kind of like that, since I'm kind of an improbable hip-hop artist, but I had fun. If there are any real rappers out there who would like to take this on and have the aiff with vocals removed in spots, drop me a line and it's yours!
Thanks for listening, guys.

Lyrics:
(Wake up everybody, the world is ending,
and if we don't
stand together,
it's our fault, too.)
(History in the making),
Wake up everybody,
the nightmare is coming,
while you were sleeping,
they were dreaming
a dream for you,
a dream for you,
you didn't ask them to,
you didn't ask them to,
dream it for you.
Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.
(Get, get, get back.)
While you were sleeping,
they were dreaming for you.
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody
Wake up
Wake up
Wake up
(That's right, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon)
You and I can fight the darkness,
(listen to me, listen to me, now)
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can fight together.
One and one and one is more than one.
(Listen to me, listen to me, now.
Listen).
Wake up everybody,
the world is melting.
While you were breathing,
they were stealing,
your dreams from you,
your dreams from you,
you didn't ask them to,
steal them from you.
You didn't ask them to.
While you were breathing
(work it just a little bit)
they were stealing from you.
Wake up.
(C'mon, c'mon
get your head right,
get your head right.)
You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
One and one and one is more than one.
(Listen)
Stand up everybody,
no more acquiescing.
If you don't stop them,
you're asking them to,
asking them to,
steal from you.
Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.
(Listen to me, listen to me, listen to me now).
You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
(C'mon, c'mon get your head right).
One and one and one is more than one.
(Listen).
Wake up everybody

This is way too cool.... I'm glad to hear you do this maybe I can get some inspiration to the mix I'm working on..... I love this THX for sharing.
Peace, Love & Respect

ledebutant
Kenta, Thanks. I'm really looking forward to hearing yours once you get inspired.
Skean
Hopefully I can fix it this weekend.... I'm in the end part now :)... Peace, Kenta

Lisa, you took this wayy in a direction I wouldn't've guessed, wow. I love the effects you put on your vox, and the weird tweaks in general. Funny, I also supatrigga'd your voice in my mix. It's cool that you were able to get those pro rappers to help out :)
ledebutant
You supatrigga'd, too? It's such a fun app and it was fun doing bounces to get the effects I wanted just to see what the computer would randomly generate. It was nice of Tyrone to help out; I agree.
dajama
This is lots of fun, and works well, I think. Vocal sounds cool, and the sounds keep it really fresh and different. The awards ceremony mash-up image was in my head the whole time! Nice one. Peace.
ledebutant
Glad that image stuck with you. Once it popped into my head, I couldn't get it out, so I just stuck with it. It really does seem like there's at least one scene of complete randomness during one of those shows, these days. I'm glad you had fun listening.
MIRx
and lyrics, beautiful. Nive remix too, enjoyed :)
MIRx
NICE, not NAIVE... LOL
ledebutant
Hah! I dunno, MIRx, I have to admit to being fairly naive when it comes to hip-hop. I'm glad you enjoyed it. LOL!
Moviz
versions are excellent, I think you woke us all up to the possibilities of playing about with a song, but it must be quite good in the first place for success....... and this is great, cheers M
ledebutant
Thanks, Maurice. I really did feel as though I was playing. I'm usually very stressed about the end result, but this time, I'd already done my singing with the original version and could just have fun. Thanks!
tmcfate
tried anything like this . i find it interesting. your voice is very versital and i like that you experement as much as you do. i think you are clever and witty as well
thanks
tim

I'll bet if you did try anything like this, you'd do surprising and wonderful things with it. I do enjoy experimenting. Part of it is the nature of collaborating as much as I do, I guess.
Thank you so much for your kind words. You are truly one of the most talented, skilled musicians and writers on this entire site, so it means a lot.
ktb
Lisa, this embraces the pink daisy strap. So cool what yu did here. Matts synths rule in the mix.
ledebutant
Here's the question, though, John. Am I embracing the pink daisy strap, or is it embracing me? :-)
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
illuminati
remix master. All you need is some stuffy applause as the rappers walk onstage and I'm there with you at the Grammys. I think the volume is spot on, BTW. Clear with lots of depth. Too bad Tyson couldn't couldn't double some of your lines.
Very fun and innovative.
Matt
ledebutant
Thanks for letting me remix you, b'mate. It was kind of a weird experience going in after-the-fact to monkey around with what you monkied around with and now you should monkey with this...uh huh, uh huh, YEAH YEAH! Okay...maybe we should just get on with our next Orbiting project.
Yeah, that Tyson was nice, but he was an 'artiste' and refused to double my lines. He said he had his own message to share or something.
K.I.S.KISMET
this sounds amazing! music with a message:) love the wonderful production!
ledebutant
Thank you. Kind words on production mean a lot from you.

...or...or...
Lisa, I love this lyric.
"While you were breathing, they were stealing from you..."
"No more acquiescing." That's about my mood right now.
I could imagine someone like Seal singing the living heck out of this. Not that Seal is hip-hop either, but I think he'd get it...
Anyway, I think this is both brilliant and true, and I think that brilliant and true count for something.
It's great musically, and you and that voice of yours just continue growing in scary, wonderful ways...
This song oughta have its own web site....
Ed
Purple satin Strat with pink daisy strap... gives one pause for thought... and hey, by the way, I just bought an amp...
And I DON'T have a daisy strap...
ledebutant
You NEED A DAISY strap. I'm calling Sweetwater and making sure they give you one!
I'm very excited you just bought an amp because this surely bodes well for more electric stuff from you. I do hope you and David do some more songs and, I've also figured out that you work as a hired gun now, so The Orbiting must collab with you before I die!
Seal you say? He has to get past me first. Hah!
ledebutant
Guess what? I just realized that we're both assigned to Jeff Barnett at Sweetwater. That very nice man just sold me a Firebox and I love him.
LunaTrick
lovely vocals - good production - alluring song. Well done!
ledebutant
I'd never thought of this song as alluring, but these remixes are bringing out all sorts of interesting things. Thanks!
timothy devine
cool
way cool
i love this, your voice works well here
peace
wake up everybody
and take notice
very happening tune here
tim
Cool remix, I loved all the versions of this song and I guess some more to come. I like this, very nice work! Cool..

Nice going homegirl. Really dig this version.
All I can say is Nice Work!
LL
I prefer the original Orbiting version - thanks for the link.
That Jampack is just plain bad. And not in a good, 'bad' way.
Maybe it could be redeemed by having someone like Spitlogic on it. His vocal on 'Broken' (remix) is what you need:

I really like the panning in the beginning.... Listening in headphones.... And it sounds great..... And good, thoughtful lyrics..... Great... Good wide mix....
...blistering hot Hoboken summer afternoon just rippling through this. I'd never have thought these components would slip together so well, but they just groove!
Ejh is right about the Seal comment - if Seal knows a good thing when he hears it he should give you a call. Today.
Love the remix!
michael2
like the use of supatrigga on the vox. like the re-mix you've done. all of the keys sound grreat. not really 100% sold on the guest vocalists, but i don't hate them either. great job.
Jim Bouchard
nice variety of stuff all working together pretty well. I'm not totally sold on the sonic quality of some of the vocal samples, but I guess you're working with what's there. It would be cool if the hiphop MJ guys wanted to do their own thing and maybe this will inspire something like that. It's all about the journey!
Macaudion
You know, us earthly beings don't tend to wanna stop and then, HAVE to hear about all of those pesky little responsibilities that upon completion, they don't reward us our instant gratification or, at best, they don't seem to have some immediate enough, adverse effect on us. However, this little groove thing is working the brilliance factor... It has a message that needs to want to be heard. The obvious brilliance is that this little number plays host to a heaping helping of, what is cool and hip - pesky be gone! - Resolve: an important message that grooves and now, it wants to be heard over and over again - CLEVER MOVE - But the "groove train" didn't just stop at this station... - you and Matt, with a huge dose of grace, you've offered up this groovy little piece of work and with the stated liberties, you're encouraging the creative soul to take it and make it there own! So now, this message will be presented in other musical forms that will undoubtedly, expand the array of musical appeals, while creating a larger and more varied audience that will actually want to stop and listen to hear, what needed to be heard...
You guys, this truly is a gift that will keep on giving....
How does one not be impressed...
There should be an award befitting of such an accomplishment.
Macca
Macaudion
...clearly, I was in a groovy little mood last night...
Very creative Lisa! My Teen Daughter would totally dig this version.
Thanks for the DL
respectfully,,, your new bud, T

The combination of very girly singer and very macho rapper is the key to commercial success, it seems.
You've taken the formula and appropriated it. I like the result.
renecalvo
and you are hot I really like the low tone ambiance. when are you playing the garden?
pooey
I can just imagine these geeky white guys in a studio asking some rapper "Okay, now how about 'break it down', and a little more down home, okeedokee?"
You tried, but your vocals are so cool, it makes the vocals from the pack sound a fair bit lame. It was a good effort. History in the making!
Overall, the song is cool. Nice vibe.
Cantor
vocals strong. remix good. balance balanced. i'm trying to wake up. kick it!!!
the force is strong with this one!

today...playing it live...as I type on KSVY 91.3fm and KSVY.org. Perfect tune...talking Civil Rights this morning...Wake Up has been the theme. Thanks Ledeb. Awesome!
craft
this soundz really good... Well done.. I like the feeling. Beautiful voice
Diviner
You have the arranged this really well and those extra vocals are really amusing. When I saw that you had started with reggae I thought 'Oh No' because thats exactly what I'm doing with the track (and heavily using CamelSpace as well), however there is a change of direction in your track which is really good (not only to listen to but leaves the space open for me as well).
Enjoyed Lisa.
maxruehl
I like this very much, Lisa.:)
Henke
if I commented on the original, but I remember thinking that this got to be your best vocals so far. And that's not saying little. The singing feels more mature and "sure" and along with the strong lyrics and these newly added elements this is a hit with me. Thanks for sharing!

Nice cut job on the supporting vox. The sparse mix works very well for this tune I think. The simplicity of the song adds to the vocals, since there's so much to listen to in the lyrics alone.
I think you were going for this, but the "you and I..." lines seem to start a little off beat in several places. It definitely draws my attention, but it also distracts me from the flow of the tune---just an observation.
Nicely done.

Hello you sing gud. i come from sweden and i can only litle english curry is my dad good

I like your comment and I like your pretty blond hair.
atonalis
However, in one word....wonderful.
ledebutant
...that means a lot.
poodyglitz
Very clean. Your voice is reminiscent of Alison Statton from Young Marble Giants.
PrototypeEightyOne
nice track very clean production, and your voice was the star of this. I enjoyed the mix but your voice and lyrics were amazing...really good stuff! i wasnt feeling the guy in the background.. i felt you were deep but i didnt get any kind of deep vibe from him.. reminded me more of 80s emcees who talked in the background to hype the track, but this wasnt that kind of track. less hype and more emotion from him would have been dope. anyways again i really liked this regardless, and am going to check out some of your other stuff.
Lisa goes to the Hood! This song is PHAT!!!! (Pretty Hot and Trendy!)
