Description:
This is definitely the first time I have ever done an 80's song. Inspired by the MJ LiveAid concert.
I tried to channel my inner Ocasek and didn't quite make it. I had a heck of a lot if fun doing it though. Thanks for setting this challenge up guys!

And yes that picture is of me in 85'. Check the kickin' Top Gun mirror shades. They're as big as my freakin' head. The girlies loved it :)

Beware of the synthesizers!

I sang this in a much different style than usual - it would only work for this tune. Thanks for your great comments as usual Feter - much appreciated.

your inner Ocasek isn't a bad place to start IMO - and I think it's pretty successful too! Excellent 80's sound and top-notch production make this a real winner. I can imagine this being on a Cars album!

yeah &mdash 06/15/08 - 10:42:28 PM
you just can't go wrong getting an 80's sound when using a synth like that. This actually started off as an acoustic song for the coffee house. I'm glad it turned into this.

Hey &mdash 06/13/08 - 07:42:48 PM
I still wear shades like that. Anyway nice take on making 80's music. Good production.

Yeah, but you pull it off with some style man! I've also got the elastic waistband with a tucked in Hawaiian shirt up there. I think my socks are pulled to my knees too.

Thanks for the comments Mitchell.

Terrific song &mdash 06/13/08 - 10:01:43 PM
and a great 80s vibe. The drum sound is kicking, and the combo of the chiming and the distorted guitar just puts the icing on the cake. The synths work very well - nice sounds and well-placed. This is a terrific song. Great vocal, too. Great picture, too! Nicely done. Peace.

I was thinking of doing an all electronic drum sound but ended up keeping the live sound, that seemed to help keep with the Cars type sound.
Thanks for listening.

What's cool is this is a great solid song that has a timeless style.

I totally enjoyed this alot!

This was definitely a new venture for me. The recent challenges have been great because they have inspired me to step out of the box a little bit with what I record and also what I listen to.
Thanks Vic.

music is more catchy than the vox for me, but I am happy how it came out. I had a hell of a time writing words for this though.
Oh well if I'm having fun I must be doing something right.
Thanks Dee

Nice going Nick, I hear that synth a la The Cars. I think Rick would be proud.

Nice piece of songwriting.

So 80s That... &mdash 06/14/08 - 01:20:47 PM
it almost hurts. LOL

Nice job on this, Nick. Your vocals aren't quirky enough to fill those Ocasek shoes, but you've created a real nice musical bed here, very reminiscent of The Cars. In the end, your vocal gives it a distinctive feel all its own. ;)

Thanks Joe &mdash 06/21/08 - 08:33:51 PM
I started off trying to write some quirky lyrics but they ended up this way. The words are where I struggle the most. I had the music done for a while before the vox were added. Everything came together well enough though.
Thanks,
nick

Cool Shades &mdash 06/15/08 - 12:18:03 PM
...could get you anywhere back then. This really reminds me of Ben Orr's solo album (he actually sang many of the Cars' tunes) although those squirrelly synths and lazy guitars are right off the Cars' sound - especially those awesome synths. Beware, indeed - I'm going to go grab a pair of biggo mirrored shades and dri-i-ive..........!

I seems to remember Ocasek wearing shades way bigger than his head too. I always wanted to use that vibrato feature on my keyboard but could'nt figure out an appropriate song until now. God bless the 80's

Thanks Ric

This reminds me of &mdash 06/15/08 - 02:05:16 PM
...early Five Extra Arms. And The Cars. And (stay with me on this) Split Endz (early Crowded House).

Point is - it's so 80's I nearly got the Ray-Ban aviators out again.

Oh wait - I'm still wearing them....

Great song for this challenge - totally on the money.

Ah yes...Split Endz. I'll have to check out some of Bob's earlier work soon. It's been a fun challenge.

Thanks for listening!

Nice 80s track Nick &mdash 06/19/08 - 11:52:09 PM
I'm really glad you dropped by my song, or I might have missed your posts here at MJ. Definitely a Cars vibe (one of the 80s bands I liked, along with Nik Kershaw).

This is a cool tune and well done in all areas - playing is very cool and just right for the tune. DoD is such a wonderful set of loops - the kit track sounds very solid indeed.

No nits from me - well produced and performed.

Like I said, glad you dropped by.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I'm glad I dropped by your site also. Your live aid track is killer. I love to hear new versions of older songs. That's what I'm doing half the time here. Yeah, the Cars are one of the very few 80's bands I can still listen too. I instanly thought of this type of tune when I heard about the challenge.

Glad you liked it man.

Nice job Nick! Your "inner Ocasek"? Ha! You crack me up!

Sounds like a Cars B-side to me man. I really enjoyed it!

Be well!

I think you really nailed it - and don't feel bad about not sounding like Ocasek - you've got a much better voice. Sorry it took me so long to get here - been working out of town and swamped by real life. Great tune.

Hey Bud &mdash 06/24/08 - 11:20:09 PM
Yeah, I'm getting swamped with the real life thing too - plus summer is upon us and getting away from the computer is sounded better and better.
I don't know about a better voice than Rick but I'm working on it. Thanks for taking the time to listen. I loved your coffee house entry!
