Description:
Maurice, my 10 year old son, came up with the title and the beginning elements of this piece and I took over and ran with it. He recorded himself playing drums and singing using the MacBook's internal microphone. I added a bunch of synths, took parts of his recording and reversed parts and treated them with a bunch of wacky filters. Then add in some loops and voila!

The Insect World is right... it really sounds like the experience of a foraging bumble bee, or wandering ant. Excellent use of wacky filters. The title caught my attention, because I went for something similar with my last posting ("Arthropod") but took a more frantic approach. Nice work, Jim and Maurice.

scary fun &mdash 06/16/08 - 12:39:26 PM
Fun stuff! Or maybe I should say: scary stuff ... because it sounds like it's a bug-eat-bug world going on.

It's nice to see a father and son working together on a science project.

If you two need a name for your band ... you could always go with "The Beetles"

Maurice &mdash 06/16/08 - 02:37:31 PM
Sometimes the image of Maurice walking around your house singing "Oh Death," pops into my head randomly.

I like it that you guys are doing a song together. It's almost as though you're bringing him into the family business, although he's probably been doing this stuff for a while. What does he think of what you made out of his vocals and drums?

I love all the different textures and the backwards vocals at the end are a great endcap. For some reason the whole thing evokes Twin Peaks for me.

good - just as I would imagine the ants down on my basement floor were discussing how to get to the crumbs over there without my right foot getting in the way of their conquest.

Top sounds &mdash 06/20/08 - 03:04:35 AM
I love the quality of all the sounds you're getting here Jim. even though it's abstract and unusual there's a sonic richness that's very pleaseing to the ear (man, have I just written sonic richness? and it's only friday morning.....) time for a coffee...

you must be very proud of your son. a great concept, well-initiated by him. i can imagine him completing his own projects not too long from now :)

I like it! I like how it was bookended with his reversed vocals, and I like the drumming.
