Description:
Submitting for the Live Aid concert. Must take things into our own hands if we're really looking for change and relief...
We wrote this in 1989...the theme, unfortunately, can be related to our current situation, as well. And many, many others in the past.
Sorry for the no download...need the band's permission and I can't contact one of 'em.

Sharing Beds with History
Lyrics: Greg Carson, Music: Absolute Zero
©1989
What you're seeing on the tv screen
is only part of the picture.
What's really goin' on
is a mystery.
A mystery.
Our history.
In our hearts and in our minds
there's a search for truth.
But in the world around us
this is a mystery.
A mystery.
We're sharin' beds with history.
Lies
are what you tell me
Why do you treat me this way?
Understand:
you can't control me
with your lies, lies...
I told you once
but you didn't listen.
Told you twice
but it wasn't your problem.
Told you once
but you didn't listen.
Told you twice
But it wasn't your problem.
My mind, my spirit, and my soul
fight my body every day.
You gotta wanna believe
you can make history...
into ourstory.
Don't get pissed at me.
Your bein' lied to...
Lies
is what you told me
Why do you treat me this way?
Understand:
you can't control me
with your lies, lies, lies
I told you once
but you didn't listen
told you twice
but it wasn't your problem

Funk &mdash 06/16/08 - 04:26:50 PM
Love the funkiness of it... and I love those guitar breaks too. As for the message, it's right on, and, as you say, especially timely. [ Reply to This ]
Hi Clark... &mdash 06/16/08 - 07:05:54 PM
...how's by you?
Greg's bass playing really sets everything else up on this one. Really shines.
...and the message seems to be universal, which (quite frankly), sucks... [ Reply to This ]

Lies on TV. Lies at home. Lies between lovers. Lies in school. Whopping big lies taught at the University.
Great song by you and the gang Bob!

Doesn't it just... &mdash 06/16/08 - 09:45:08 PM
...make ya sick, sometimes...?
And it seems to have gotten to the point where the people who lay the garbage out don't even care if they get caught at it or not...above the law / rules of common decency and trust...
And I agree: it extends waaaaay beyond the tv screen...but that little rectangle sure has made quite an impact. [ Reply to This ]
Funky cool &mdash 06/16/08 - 06:44:21 PM
Please tell me that Greg didn't sing lead and play bass at the same time ;)
Very appropriate for Live Aid - like it a lot.
Neil [ Reply to This ]
Actually... &mdash 06/16/08 - 07:03:34 PM
...he did NOT "sing"/play at the same time on this tape.
However: he DID do both when we played out. I know it was hard for him...but damned if the guy didn't do it and do it WELL, consistently.
Greg's a talented fella...I love his bass on this and the lyrics are "right".
Peace, Neil... [ Reply to This ]

Nice funky, but mellow groove here, Bob. Sweet guitar embellishments.
When it comes to politics, I prefer to use the term *prevarication* rather than lie... it denotes something much more sinister than a mere lie. ;)

the guitar and bass are outstanding. I'm not sure why you aren't doing more electric these days.
those short guitar licks are are downright slick! [ Reply to This ]
My main... &mdash 06/17/08 - 05:43:41 AM
...reason for moving away from this (and any) band (besides our mutually irreconcilable differences), back then, was the birth of my daughter. Never had a kid and had been in plenty of bands.
Bands take up a lot of time, they do...so, except for a 2 year stint with the band you see me playing with in my avatar (very loose rehearsals, spaced apart gigs,) I concentrated solely on my acoustic while I stayed home with family. Wrote a boatload of tunes and set my plan to put 'em out there once Ava didn't need me around the house as much, anymore.
That's why I haven't played as much electric. Thanks for the compliment, though. I'll probably do a bit of it, again, once the cd is done...but not like before. I'll be playing out on the acoustic at that point, which will take up most of my musical time. There are only so many hours in the day when you're not working the trade full time. [ Reply to This ]

Lyrics are also neat...

sounds like a great band.Nice to hear some of your very cool electric playing.Did you guys play out much? [ Reply to This ]
Yep... &mdash 06/19/08 - 05:42:01 PM
...we used to play out a lot. Started getting some really nice gigs (China Club, Lone Star Roadhouse, CBGBs, etc) and interest and then: *BAM*...it was done.
Oh well...I'm still in contact with most of the band. The bass player (Greg) and I have talked about recording some stuff. I'll probably do that sometime in the fall or winter.
Thanks, Mark...

Nice track - def. got your own sound there.
Made me think of an old track of a friend of mine - recorded at about the same time and with similar kits (and attitudes).

This was... &mdash 06/23/08 - 05:55:06 PM
...a tune from our first demo tape. Pretty basic recording technique (4 track cassette tape). No editing. I just plugged in and pushed some pedals. We were "young" as a band.
So...yes: it's pretty rudimentary. When we played out it had more presence, but it really didn't change much. Just a fuller sound, which, I think, is what's lacking here and what you might be talking about...be nice to add some horns, though...hmmm...
But, yeah: it's a very cool tune...thanks for the listen, helena.

Fostex &mdash 07/01/08 - 01:13:23 PM
Fostex four-track - - as in 'cassette' four track? If so, this is a pretty amazing recording.
The mood of this song reminds me of "Cherokee Nation" by Paul Revere and the Raiders.
How many different singers sing the melody on this song? Nice to hear the contrasts. Reminds me of when the Temptations sang "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and each one of the guys would take a turn singing the lead. Cool then, and this is cool now.
I like the guitar work a lot. Echoes of Eric Clapton.
History -- hmm, I have a masters' degree in history. (I teach music, but I'm also licensed to teach history.) You're right, that we can't know with absolute certainty that any particular version of history is the most faithful to the truth. We see through a glass darkly, as the Apostle put it. But someday we will see clearly.
This is a very solid track. Hope you can contact your last band-mate. You had a good thing going with this band. [ Reply to This ]
Glad you said that, John... &mdash 07/01/08 - 08:11:01 PM
...I thought we did a good job with the Fostex. It was, basically, just playing/singing your part through the tune, with a bit of bouncing on the vox.
You're a performer and I'm glad you can appreciate the amount of work we put in, as a complete band, to be able to play well in a live (or close to live, as with this recording) situation. We worked our tails off and dug it. Rehearsals were actually my favorite thing with these guys. Worked hard and had great collaborations. Loved the shows...but the rehearsals were the best.
Doubt we'll play again, though...but, as I said: the bass player and I are still close. Both spiritually and in physical proximity. So, who knows... [ Reply to This ]
