Description:
Micheal Wark encouraged me to get up on the bandstand at the Coffee House so I did an unplugged version of this song just for the occasion.
Because I don't have an acoustic guitar anymore, I had to do this version with all loops in GB, and I did it on short notice so please be kind.
Hope you enjoy the new version.
Ed

Thank you Feter &mdash 06/17/08 - 04:36:06 PM
in the intro on the song I called the group Scat-Back for no particular reason, but I was so tempted to name the members of the group that played the different instrument. I didn't do it of course because then people listening to it might have thought it was a collaboration of some kind and that wouldn't be right.
Can you possibly guess who it was I was going to name as the person playing the Mandolin Feter? Of course, it was you. lol You were the natural choice for the Mandolin player my friend.
The instruments I used were an Upright Bass, 2 different rhythm guitars, and 2 different Mandolins, that's it.
Well Feter now you know the rest of the story that didn't get said in the intro on the recording.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed the new version, it is much softer than the first one I posted. Thanks again for the kind words my friend and for listening.
Take care, stay well, and be cool,
Ed

Wonderful! &mdash 06/17/08 - 04:37:08 AM
Always a treat listening to your soft vocals. Even though the music is loops but I loved the clarity and the quality of your work. Very fine Coffeehouse performance!
Take Care

I didn't feel right about posting this without clarifying what I did for the backtracks. Loops can be a very powerful tool for making a song into a really nice piece of music if you're thoughtful and careful about how you go about it.
I'm glad you liked the song, and for the kind words my friend. It was all I had to offer for the Coffee House gig and I wanted it to be done right.
Take care Yeman and be cool my friend,

Truly a classic as Mr. Feter says! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Mark &mdash 06/17/08 - 05:05:22 PM
It's a simple song with a simple message that was given to me as a gift from on high when I went to a religious retreat in 1982. It's always stayed with me, but until now I've never recorded it and released it into the wild.
Thanks for your wonderful comments on it Mark and about my vocal, it really has a special meaning to me.
take care my friend,

What a beautiful and inspiring tune Ed! Loops, eh? If you hadn't told me I wouldn't have known!
Lovely and insightful lyrics delivered with assurance and conviction. Well done!

Thanks Micheal &mdash 06/17/08 - 05:22:19 PM
I see the culprit returns to the scene of the crime.
Ya know Mike this is all your fault. I wouldn't be in this mess if you hadn't encouraged me to go to the Coffee House.
I giving Micheal a ration here folks because it was his suggestion that I put up a song for the Coffee House. And now that I think of it I'm really glad I did. This brings back a lot of very good memories from many years ago when I actually did this kind of thing. Except back that there wasn't anything around called loops, except for maybe in my shoe laces.
Thanks Micheal for getting me off my As* and doing something that took me out of my comfort zone. Did me a wealth of good on several levels my friend.
Take care, stay well, and Be Cool,
Ed

That's a very nice thing to say, that you've been waiting for this one. Thanks to Micheal, I got off my butt and finally did one for the Coffee House show, and I'm happy the way it turned out.
It's nice to hear that you are as well my friend and I appreciate your kind words very much.
Thanks again for taking time to stop and listen, and for the kind words.
Be well and stay cool Guy,

I have never considered myself a singer really, but I do like to step up to a mic when I can and try my best. Your comment makes my chest puff out and my head swell my friend, and I thank you for that. Only problem is now I have to continue trying harder, and I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for that.
I'm really happy you liked the song Bill. Thanks again for the nice comment about my vocal on this song, it really is much appreciated.

Well Dick, &mdash 06/18/08 - 03:41:31 PM
what's a fella to do when he can't scare up an acoustic guitar? Loop it of lose it I guess.
I wanted to do at least one song for the Coffee House gig and this seemed like one I could do pretty well with loops if I was careful about it.
Thanks for the listen Dick. I appreciate the comment and kind words.
By the by, did you hear what I did with your guitar part in "Funk on the Rocks yet? If not, have a listen. I think you'll be pleased by how it turned out my friend.
Thanks again Dick, be cool man

Glad you liked the way it turned out. It's probably better done this way than if I'd had played it live using a real acoustic guitar.
Thanks again for the kind words Maurice, and for coming over to have a listen.
Take care my friend,

opening with the quality of the voice and clapping. Enjoy the country sound ! Miss this style in on the current radio, This more quite style should be heard on the current radio. Enjoy the crowd as you go on in and through the tune. Cool low singing and great lyrics. What a great theme in the words look to the rainbow gospel message!

Hello Bill &mdash 06/19/08 - 08:14:11 PM
Thanks for all the kind words my friend, I'm really glad you enjoyed the song. And I agree with you about the quiet style and the radio. I've gotten to the point where I don't even like to listen to the radio any more. Everything is always in your face. The music, the commercial advertising, The news, all of it.
I wanted to generate a Coffee House atmosphere on this version so I did an unplugged take and put it into what's supposed to be a Coffee House setting. The only problem is I think the size of the audience I used sounds a bit large. Oh well, it was still fun to do it this way.
Thanks again for stopping in for a listen Bill, always nice to see your smiling face here.
Take care my friend,

specially for the comment about the loops. I wasn't too sure how I was gonna put this together using loops, but I found some I thought would work okay.
Really glad you liked the song, and took time to let me know. I can't seem to get away from the Country stuff and always go back to it after a while.

Intelligent .. &mdash 06/20/08 - 11:14:06 PM
.. use of loops Ed. I've tried using loops on country-style songs before, and know how difficult it can be to get everything to work together.
I wouldn't have picked loops if you hadn't mentioned it (which gets brownie points from me - being up front about it I mean).
One thing about loops is that in the hands of an experienced musician, they can sound great in any type of music.

Hi Neil &mdash 06/20/08 - 11:57:06 PM
When you already have a song built in another medium like analog it's hard to duplicate that exact sound with loops. But if you're starting from scratch with a song you already know, on which you already know the parts you want, the hardest part is finding a loop that will work for each of the various parts.
There is always going to be some compromise when using loops, but if you're careful, and pay attention, you can end up with something that not only works for the song, but sounds natural and not at all like loops. It's not a rule, it's the exception because it really depends on the song you're doing, how much attention you pay to details on each of the tracks you use, and the loops you have available.
The best investments I've made in being able to do music is the my new iMac, the various software I have for it like Garage Band, Logic Express 8, Cubase SE3, and the JamPacks I've bought to use for doing music. One other thing that has given me some more tools to work with is the Free Loops that are occasionally offered here and a few other places. Most of them are just parts of a collection that is for sale by a Loop vendor, but there are always a few gems in the samples they give you for free that can make for an interesting part in a song.
I guess what you say is right, when you mention experience. The only way to get that experience is to try stuff out and see if it works. Post it and listen to the comments of others, they'll tell you straight out when it works. Sometimes it's a little harder to get them to tell you when it's not working, but that's just because they don't want to hurt your feelings. And don't give up. This thing we do with music is a learning process, which is why MacJams is so important. This is where your fellow musicians will give you the benefit of their knowledge and experience for free. It's their way of giving back what they received from others in an effort to help you learn the ways of what we do, without you having to reinvent the wheel so to speak.
Okay, I'll quit now. Thanks again for the kind words Neil, and for stopping in. Always glad to see you when you come around.
Take care, stay well, and be cool my friend,

iMac &mdash 06/21/08 - 03:46:49 AM
My new iMac and Logic Studio arrive next week - really excited about that (especially after a false start when the company I first ordered through went bust!). The experience I was referring to is more the decades you and I and others have put into playing and listening to music. That really shows on somwething like this because you know what will work and what won't. Also, your sense of timing is well-honed.
Cheers,
Neil [ Reply to This ]
Your gonna love the new iMac Neil, &mdash 06/21/08 - 10:16:09 AM
and Logic is great as well. One thing you'll find is that there is a learning curve with Logic that's a lot steeper than GB. Not so much for laying down tracks, but for some of the other more complicated stuff you might want to do. But it does get easier with time.
You and I and some of the others do have more experience than some here, but that just goes along with living to be old f*rts and staying connected to music for so long. Like I said before, it takes time to learn this stuff but after a while you do learn what works and how to get there. It takes time to train the ears, but unfortunately as we get older, the ears don't hear as good as they once did. Too much loud music from playing Rock & Roll as kids. lol
Thanks again Neil, keep up the great work you're doing my friend.
Cheers,

I'm really glad you got to hear this one. It's been a very special song to me since I wrote it in 1982. But as special as it's always been, I never did a proper recording of it until now. There's another version posted here as well, but it's more commercial. This one is really more spiritual, and I like it better.
Thanks again for listening to it and for the very kind words about it. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it so much.
Peace to you as well Dee,

I'm really glad you stopped in to listen to this song and found something you liked. Because of where and how this song came to be, it has a special place in my heart.
I really like this version better than the Band version with electric guitars, drums, and all that. This one fits the feeling of the song much better.
Thanks you again for listening, and for your kind words Myrna, it is very much appreciated.
