Description:
Recently Thomas Dolby assembled a small orchestra for a multi-media performance in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sputnik. Complete with story telling as well as live music and video. In the story they touched on the canine named Laika that was sent up in Sputnik II. This stray found on the streets of Moscow became a national hero to the Russians, there were even cigarettes named after her. The tragic thing to me is that they never intended to bring her back home after her journey. Yet here is the world celebrating this dog all the way to her death in low orbit. I thought it was an interesting story and I felt she (Laika) deserved a song.

Hats off to Mr. Dolby for an amazing performance that ultimately inspired me to write this tune. You can see a video of the show at his website....I highly recommend it.....enjoy Laika....

btw, there is no synth used on this tune whatsoever.

p.s. this is from the new SCW album "Fantastic" available on iTunes and cdbaby.com

p.p.s.s. join us this Sunday June 22nd at 10pm Eastern 9 Central on www.wildbunchradio.com for the SCW "Fantastic" listening party with Mack Danger....I'll be live in the studio with him discussing the new record and so much more....should be a blast....

Lyrics:
Go out and find a Russian stray
Be certain it is cute
Give her some food and water too

The Moscow dog in orbiter 2
Posed such a threat to western views
Be sure the press get good pictures
What they don't know she won't be coming back to earth

hallelujah
next stop luna

The world is watching, contact

Her harness tight, up from daylight
See ya, sweet pup, bon voyage, good luck

So they achieve the most expensive way
to euthanize in the vacuum of space

hallelujah

No they did not plan, No they did not plan
To bring her back
Toss her out with the can, Toss her out with the can
She burns out upon re-entry

Laika shines like a shooting star
To distant to come home but not too far
Laika shines like a shooting star
To distant to come home but not too far

This is different &mdash 06/19/08 - 09:19:35 PM
In a good way that is. Alternative, yes, but also very progressive I think. Interesting cable performance. Love the vocals, very interesting harmonies. This is indeed a very good song. Thank you.

thanks man.... glad I can keep it interesting for you.... the cable thing was an accident of sorts from years ago...an idea that I finally got around to using....thankfully the notes that get generated were still in tune with the guitars....

peace....

this has a nice edge to it. same edge i like on umm i think the 2nd track of your new cd (and yes i've been listening to the cd thank you) after hearing your influence of my bloody valentine i remembered i had them on my ipod to listen to but still hadn't.. so i listened and i can hear the influence, but i like your style more. perhaps because i can hear the vocals on your songs but there's are so quiet the recordings i have. this song sounds somewhat familiar don't know if it's on your cd of if you've posted before. perhaps it's on the cd. anyways nice track as always.

Really Nice Work, Ian &mdash 06/24/08 - 10:47:48 PM
I'm often turned off by derivative works in this genre which are constantly regurgitating Soundgarden, but you manage to be more inventive than that and to broaden the musical landscape.

Fabulous falsetto and high harmony work... really tight.

I DID tune in for a bit to the listening party on Sunday, but had to check out just as you were *sweet-talking* your wife. Really solid musicianship in your work. Best of luck to you. ;)
