Description:
A few days ago I posted "Tralalalalala" for piano solo. Normally when I write something, I just leave it alone. But tonight a few other thoughts came to mind, so I thought I would share them in hopes of getting some thoughts for anyone who might listen to both versions. They really end up as two totally different pieces...but a lot of fun putting them together nevertheless. I hope you will enjoy them.

Another nice rendition of this lovely piece. I couldn't stop listening to the 1st one and now here's another with some fine addition. Who wouldn't love to listen to this amazing piece the whole day? I love it! Masterfully done.
Take Care

I missed &mdash 06/19/08 - 07:18:16 AM
the first version so I was going to say it didn't matter because I had the 'improved' version here, but..... it sounds from your description above as though I'm probably getting two for the price of one LOL as it's a variation rather than an 'improvement' (as if you could improve on any of your delightful music). This as with all your music brings such a feeling of innocent peace and of times gone by. This could be the music to a period film... one with James Mason and Margarate Lockwood (before your time?) as they used to be. It's lovely. I just have to enthuse about your work, because it sounds so finished, lovely.... must go find the other one now, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Good &mdash 06/19/08 - 08:30:39 PM
Good melodies, like this, sound good in a lot of settings. Your orchestration brings out new images from the same melody. The flute is even lighter and brings out a sort of carefreeness to the composition. The oboe variations come off a bit more serious providing an interesting contrast.
Thanks

...reminds me a bit of the band Iron Maiden, Paul...
;)
You know that I love them both...like fraternal twins...alike and different. Musically, it would be along the lines of whether you like the piano or orchestral version of "Picture at an Exhibition", or both (both, please).
So: I like both. I think that there's a bit more depth to the orchestrated version...especially during the oboe solo. It's so much easier to create and emphasize that space with separate instruments than with two hands, though you're quite good at the latter. I'm not just saying that, either...as a classical guitarist and sometimes pianist, I understand what's what in that area of line separation.
I really like this version quite a bit, Paul...and the piano, too. This one's ready to go to the ball...the other one's more of a constant companion that I could happily take to the movies, dinner, OR the ball...
...or an Iron Maiden concert. [ Reply to This ]
Hello Paul &mdash 06/21/08 - 05:47:49 PM
I and my lady have listened to both and while they are both beautifully done and well recorded, we agree on this. We like the original piece on piano better if only because it is the softer of the two.
Please do not misunderstand, they are both excellent, it's just that this piece seems a little too busy. One thing I think would help to tame this piece would be the use of more double bass to bring up the bottom end of the piece, and to bring the levels down on the flute and a few if the other high pitched instruments in the piece. They are distractingly loud to my ears.
The Piano piece by itself doesn't have any of the things to distract the listener from the flow of what is a very beautiful piece of music.
Just my humble opinion Paul, which takes nothing away from your artistry, only the mix as it is now in this particular piece.
Never the less, kudos to you for you fine musicianship and creativity on both of these wonderful pieces.
Respectfully,
Ed [ Reply to This ]

I can see that you really love the piano. This is really lyrical and melodic and the flute and oboe add lovely lines about the gentle piano accompaniment. Keep writing [ Reply to This ]
