This smells good! &mdash 06/19/08 - 06:37:58 AM
nothing like a nice cool, funky track with hypnotic bass line to start the day... and make me late for work.

So yeah- I'll admit minor disappointment at this not being one of your wonderful vocal songs. That said, at least your voice isn't overshadowing the great guitar playing here. Strong rock groove with a nice, oriental flair.

Really love the tones you get from the ASAT. Maybe one day I'll get the Tribute model (to match my Legacy)... but I'll never get it to sound like this.

I like the avatar you are sporting these days.
You remind me of a young Angus Young.

G&L's are great aren't they? I LOVE my ASAT! Best impulse purchase I've ever made.

I would like to do a blog interview with you. If you'd like to, please email me or drop me a note.

I know what you mean about taking that first take. You know you can do better yet you never achieve the personality that was captured that first time through, when you were excited, listening better, etc. You gotta go with personality over technical perfection.

But I like songs that end. Consider a more integrated ending?

ending &mdash 06/19/08 - 02:05:32 PM
Tobin, coming up with a more integrated ending would actually make me work! Yeah, I'll admit I went with the easy ending on this - "3 and a half minutes? time to stop!"

when you just 'fart around" it sounds fantastic. Way kool sounds and groove. Especially liked the stressed out sounding guitar.

wether I'm farting around or actually farting it usually sounds interesting if nothing else. Thanks for stopping by!

i really like the different ways in which you've represented the culture. if one has a good imagination, they could easily take a stroll down insadong taking in all the wonderful sights and sounds of the culture. so do us dreamers a favor and keep creating and sharing your cosmopolitan art:)

I love your music K.I.S.KISMET! &mdash 06/23/08 - 11:03:10 PM
thanks so much for your time and thoughts. Funny thing - just before I read your comment I was thinking of putting a video together for this using footage I got of Insadong. But after reading your post I realized I didn't have to do that...you all ready got the picture.

This is great stuff! The depth and clarity you're getting is amazing, especially through GB. What are your primary plug-ins you use for mastering?

[ Reply to This ]
plug-ins &mdash 06/23/08 - 11:11:50 PM
in GB I strapped a multi-band compressor across the master outs and in PT I just used MAXIM (the digidesign plug-in, not the magazine).
BTW - your tune Grace is Enough pops into my head all the time....and I love it!

phrasing &mdash 06/19/08 - 11:19:09 AM
great phrasing on your lead gtr parts! many people try to emulate the likes of, say, satriani - but get stuck on speed and scale runs. they have missed the point... you have not. you have excellent phrasing and feel. very tasty note choices. also, great tone and delay settings. really top shelf work.

and, yes, i compared you to satriani. that's a huge compliment if you know me at all. i even have an autographed 'surfing with the alien' cd. :)

AND... &mdash 06/19/08 - 11:23:14 AM
i was wondering if those were volume swells or synths in the quiet parts. on second listen, i think it was swells. very nice job!

what most impresses me about Satriani is all the stuff he does when he's not doing finger gymnastics at 1000 mph, He's a very musical player. Also his approach to rhythm playing and creative tones and....well...you know. He's great all around.

thanks for your comments.Coming from "The Master Soundscape Builder" himself that means alot.

and to confirm your subsequent inquiry, yes, they were swells.
thanks a ton for your time and thoughts!

Nice mellow, atmospheric piece with some nasty guitar licks.

Cool sounds from that ASAT. ;)

I love your guitar playing. You've got soul, humor, taste and tone.I have a feeling that you could show off a lot more but instead you play what you feel. For some reason I'm reminded of "My Old School" with Skunk Baxter even though it's a totally different type of tune.My only complaint- should be twice as long with more solos!

SKUNK! &mdash 06/25/08 - 05:48:08 PM
I love the guitar work on My Old School. Used to play that in a cover band many moons ago.
One of my favorite players is Robben Ford who I feel can show off much much more than he ever even comes close to doing. Roy Buchanan is another one of my favorite players who's approach is more lyrical than physical. Both play with taste and patience. I know another guitarist named Mark who also plays with tons of taste and patience. You might know him.

A Large Canvas &mdash 06/20/08 - 02:59:33 PM
This is very, very interesting. A different palette than my for sure, perhaps that's why I like it. AI m very impressed with your guitar skills. Not over-played, just exactly as needed, done with passion, done with your heart. The ending sounds very strange in my ears. Other than that, you have very interesting music to offer. I am going to check out your other stuff.

Excellent track... exotic and rockin'.
Reminds me a little bit of katchoolik's tunes.

Interesting bass sound &mdash 06/24/08 - 06:41:09 PM
and the oriental sound contrast. Like the city, old oriental culture. Then the lead guitar slides right in. LIke pic and how it seems to go so well with the music. Nice staccato sound on the guitar with the lead! Then going back to the theme with the tradition with the funkyness. Then you go wild in the city, to show in a way how americanized their culture is started to be?

Just thoughts, but you provided them with the music you painted with I think.

Thanks for sharing e e !

Lovely sound .. &mdash 06/24/08 - 07:05:02 PM
.. is what leaps out at first. A really beautiful production. All nicely played with a definite oriental influence and some odd sounds. The kick/bass work really well together, and sound great - tons of drive there.
Great playing - very inventive and confident.
Like it (a lot)! Don't mind the ending either - sorry Tobin ;)
