Description:
Another one for the Midsummer – or another small lesson in history. This one about Finland. For thus of you that doesn't know, I grew up both in Finland and Sweden, but I haven't really promoted my Finnish heritage until now (even thought it obviously means a great deal to me). Again, I hope you enjoy. Thanks/Mikki

really a good sound and for me I like this the best of yours. I haven't seen you here for some time for some reason, but I just checked that you have been posting songs.... don't know how I missed them, but will go check them out. Great sound with the accordian on this and I love the rhythm too. Good stuff, regards M [ Reply to This ]

I love the contrast in the lead vocals and the backing vocals, how the lead voice is so solid and strong and the backing voice is reedier and more emotional and urgent. That's a very cool touch, the difference in emotion.
I think I'd like to borrow your brain for a little while because I would never have thought to do anything like this. I find it tremendously original, while also being incredibly enjoyable as a piece of music (like a lot of your stuff)> The lyric "tango war/Mannherheim Tsars," is gorgeous stuff.
I also always so look forward to seeing your song art. It always looks great.

Your comments are always so insightful... First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to listen and comment. Of course with so many positive adjectives, I don't know what to do with myself. I can only bow and feel honored.
My brain is yours if you think you can handle it, anytime! :) [ Reply to This ]
It's great &mdash 06/20/08 - 08:37:21 AM
to share your cultural thoughts in music. Doesn't seem that there is enough of this because so many of us come from different parts of the world.
Having some german blood in me. I wish I could travel more to places like Finland. But right now I have to pay the bills, but I can travel through music like yours.
Thanks for sharing! [ Reply to This ]

cool &mdash 06/20/08 - 04:59:35 PM
The choppyness of the lyrics moves the story along in less traditional means (which is always good), but it doesn't lose the story. writing lyrics like this has to be harder than the storyteller method. A very cool and interesting piece. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you &mdash 06/22/08 - 07:33:34 PM
I am not sure how I relate to my lyric writing, really. Sometimes, more often than less, the lyrics and the story arrives before the music, while in this particular song, it was a feeling that lead up to both the music and its lyrics. I used to write more traditional lyrics (and sometimes still does, especially on Friday's after a few beers and with the punk rock 'n' roll inside of myself). However, I am not seeking anything with my writing style, that is just how it comes out. I've been writing for a long time: poetry, short stories, novels; I believe it's just a natural movement - of course - it's also my kind of vocal poetry. I am really happy you noticed and made a remark about this. [ Reply to This ]
Ethnic rock? &mdash 06/20/08 - 05:30:47 PM
Ethnic? &mdash 06/22/08 - 07:37:24 PM
I never understood the meaning of that word, I mean perhaps a few decades ago, but these days, we all have our influences and can get them from every corner of the World, as we do here at MACJAMS's word example. It is not ethnic in the sense that I am trying to share music or culture form Finland in this song, it is more a search of who I once was, where I once lived a grew up, a search sometimes needed to be able to move on... Driving mysteriously textured... great accordion... loved the lyrical delivery and subject matter.
I am part Finnish myself! My father's side of the family is from Finland and he grew up on a farm in upper Michigan. It explains my last name (Kauppila). [ Reply to This ]
Stan &mdash 06/22/08 - 07:47:47 PM
I have to admit I did never see the "Kauppila" part of you, I only did see Stun Nuts which sounds like Chicago Jazz musician. Ladies and Gentleman, on trumpet we have... :)
I hope you got enough Finnish stories and anecdotes to fill your life; if not, I'd be happy to share.
I grew up in Finland from when I was born until I was 7, moved to Sweden, then back to Finland again when I was 13 to when I was 17 and then back to Sweden again...
I am glad this particular song found you. [ Reply to This ]

You are always churning out the greatest stuff and it's great to see you back. Love that accordion! And these words: "In a wood he stood facing a bear". [ Reply to This ]
Jim, it's been a long time &mdash 06/22/08 - 07:59:05 PM
Yes, this is to me what would refer to as physical music with symbolic metaphors. I can't sit and do this, I have to stand and play with my whole body. Feel it from toes to the edge of every hair. It has a lot of symbolism in here: "In a wood he stood facing a bear", has triple meanings to it; one, facing the Russian Army in the Finnish Winterwar (my grandfather), or facing the cultural awakening of Finland as a new-born Nation through the art of Kallela - or simply the rich nature of Finland (I did see a beer once myself in the woods in Northern Finland, and although facing it would be to dramatize it, it was close enough for one little boy that had never seen one ever before to make it to this song... Now this is what I call roots rock! Glad to see you getting in touch with your heritage. Interesting mix of styles. Soemtimes folky, sometimes techno-y. Cool.

Thanks for the complements. I also wanted to point out, I am not trying to do anything that already has been done on this front, but I may be mistaken. I am trying to tell a story from my point of a view. I think the Roots comes in because I am using Finland as a concept and Finnish as some of the words. Change the lyrics to Spanish, and this could very well be a homage to Argentina. I think the mix of modern versus Accordion makes it interesting musically, but like I mentioned above, I am seeking more than feeding answers. I am very, very glad you liked it. [ Reply to This ]

The chords just came to me, as if this was it and it could not have been any other way. It actually started out as a clean accordion song, but evolved into merging with a modern mix. Glad you enjoyed, and commented. [ Reply to This ]

I love the chord arrangement in this, sometimes the smallest tonal change in the right direction makes all the difference. The singing is what stands out the most in a good way i like the way you let the echo control the way you say each line.. BTW thanks for the history on finland didn't know much about it.. Enjoyed this allot thanks! [ Reply to This ]
