Description:
I am that guy who has been away for awhile, checking in when he can, but not really being a part of. life has gotten busy (june is the end of the grant cycle so I get really busy with extra work). anyways, glad to be back posting, and I swore to Lisa I would do something to this song and here it is. The automation in GB4 was giving me troubles, so I didn't get to fully realize my vision. ah well, them's the breaks. Thanks to the Orbiting. Here's the original:

Didn't want to do a totally electronic remix, so there is guitar in this as well. my ears are still not where they should be, so hope this sounds okay to those of you who have full use of your hearing.

One of the finest remixes of this great piece. Nothing is wrong at all with your mix.. Amazing work my friend, nice guitars and really cool background sounds.

thanks so much. i think the mix turned out okay, but it just wasn't what I was picturing in my head. who knows, maybe i'll like it better in the long run with less trippy stuff going on. thanks so much for listening.
Feter
its just so cool to work with this gem and listenin to
it again and again is something realy cool ... !!!
thnx alot for sharin it !!!!
michael2
thanks so much for listening and for your kind words. it's a really nice song huh? they did a great job with it. i didn't even realize how long it was until i dumped it into itunes.
rsorensen
awesome, awesome remix, michael. suits the vocals perfectly. guitars parts are rad, keys are gorgeous. And of course it's hard to go wrong with such an inspiring vocal track from Lisa. great!
michael2
glad you liked. would love to catch Lisa after she went out drinking and smoking all night and get her on a moody cat power tune. thanks for listening man, loved your last one.

I'm listening to the song right now, but if you ever want to do Sea of Love, I'm down.

I need a little while to get past "Holy S#!T I love this," syndrome before I can comment. My brain shuts down when I'm this giddy, but I needed to let you know that I'm absolutely thrilled with what you've done, michael. This is truly unbelievable and such an honor, thank you.
ledebutant
Forget Sea of Love, lets just do our own.
Jim Bouchard
Chill! I sort of wish the drum loop never came in. Everything other than that is highly intriguing, but the drum loop is a little eheh.. Love that guitar!
michael2
glad you approve. i know what you mean about the drums, they work good in the original, but kind of stick out here. i thought about changing them, but then Lisa's vox would have been the only thing left from the original. thanks for listening.
ktb
just the right feel. late night jam flavor. very kool
michael2
exactly what i was going for. thanks so much for listening.

Love the guitar(s), nice vibes, like the synthesizer, the arrangements and the vocals. Wow, the vocals buy my vote for this one. Reminds me of a French (I believe) group, Kat Onoma. Very addictive melodies.
michael2
never heard of that band, but will check them out. thanks for listening.
spitlogic
wow. I like the approach.
michael2
always things you wish had been done differently, but overall i like how it turned out. thanks for listening.

I make myself not swear online, but man, the superlatives I'm reaching for here seem to need some profane propulsion...
I ALREADY love this song, and way more than I mean when I say that I love other songs. This song speaks for me and to me... It's already hallowed ground in my book...
And this is a stunning incarnation, really perfect in a different way...
Lisa's vocals sound so different, and yet still amazingly strong and great... I love the vibe of the whole track... The drums, the mix, the little chimey things...
Aargh. And my iPod is full...
Really. Thanks for this.
Ed
michael2
that you are far too kind. i had a blast with this, even when i was having technical difficulties it was fun figuring out a way around them.
it was dumb luck how this turned out. i got the file from Lisa, and pretty much opened it and threw away everything without listening to the individual tracks. i had heard the song before, but it was awhile ago and I just wanted to do it without being influenced by the original. sometimes that makes me feel as if I'm being arrogant, but Lisa specifically said "go nuts." anyways, glad you like and thanks for listening.
caroline
i am impressed!! thank you xox
michael2
glad you liked it.
peacepiano
Like it. Mix supports the lyrics masterfully. Quiet when the lyrics are slow and wanting your full attention, powerful when the chorus comes in. One of the best versions of this I have heard.
Thanks
Bill

glad you liked. it would be pretty hard to mess this one up. the orbiting did such a good job on this one. those tracks looked so good, everything was recorded so well originally, and it's a great song. i think the security guard at my bank could've easily knocked out a good version of this. thanks for listening amd for your kind words..
just very good music!
michael2
really happy that you liked it.
Reinholt56
Great work all around.
I enjoyed it lots and lots and lots.
It's a less technical 'Quik Post' so I'm missing out any technical stuff. It was/is just a great take.
Take care.

really well matched guitars and keys to Lisa's vocals. She reminds me of a bit of later Patti Smith in this version during the talking parts. The xylophone is a great touch. I hope to find dome time and energy soon.
Sorry we couldn't hook up in LA.
michael2
i hope you get some fire in your loins soon, everyone needs to take a break every once in awhile. glad you liked the approach i used.
Peter Bauckham
pretty good to me - Lisa is in fine voice. Nice guitar sounds. I did find Lisa's voice being panned right of centre a bit strange - but it sounds nice and uncluttered as a result. I like it very much!
Peter

glad you liked it, the guitars were fun as i just hit record and started noodling around (my favorite way to record). not sure why the vox are slightly off center. ears still messed up, so if i'm not sitting exactly in the right spot, my mixes are gonna suffer (at least for now). thanks so much for listening.
ledebutant
...the security guard at your bank must be some kind of musical genius, then, because this is such a masterly remix, Michael. The music is so amazing and I actually feel as though it outclasses my vocal. I wish I had the time to resing it.
I love the marimba(?) riff, the glockenspiel (I'm such a sucker for glockenspiel) and the moody guitars. It's funny, I didn't realize the drums came from the original, but I liked them here, too. I'm with Peter, that I find the vocal being panned so far to the right a little distracting. I know that the Beatles often mixed vocals that way, but my ear has gotten so used to hearing them in the center, that I end up getting pulled out of the music at times by the location of the voice. It probably doesn't help that it's me and I'm doing my usual cringing over myself, so I may not be the best judge.
I do love the way you got the vocal to sound. Did you use Ambience? I keep meaning to ask you which setting you used on After All. I also love the way you recut the "get up, stand up," portion. I could tell before it got there that the second line wasn't going to work and I like the way you solved it. Very cool.
I can't tell you how much I adore you for doing this! That moment after the bridge back into the chorus just rules!
michael2
this is all you. i just kind of played around a bit. i'm not even sure that i am playing the right chords since i threw away so many of the tracks (kept the drums, vox and that loop that was in there).
the vox are totally dry unless you guys added something originally. there is a second track of vocal delay, but i actually forgot to add reverb and then liked it that way. the panning is a mystery to me, it's actually that way on the GB file i got, and I thought that you guys had done something trippy that I just wasn't hearing right.
glad you like the treatment i did, i was picturing Aimee Mann meets Cat Power.
Alannah
.. the slow dreamy quality in this mix .... I personally luv the "trippy" stuff ..... Lisa's vox are SMOKIN HOT on this too ! (I agree with Lisa about the vocal panning tho) ... but overall the song is killa !
michael2
trippy, psych, stoney, moody, you know i'm a sucker for that stuff too. that vocal pan is going to be the death of me. it's okay, i can always do a different remix. so glad that you're into this. thanks.
LunaTrick
Always like Michael's treatments - and the vocals are cool too!
michael2
glad you liked, remixes are really fun for me to do, although i always worry about the quality in the end. it's fine for my own songs to sound thrown together and raggedy, but I never want to subject someone else to my own "sonic sensibilities." thankfully this was so good in the first place, I really couldn't hurt it too much. thanks for listening.
Vic Holman
I like the stripping away everything and starting from a clean slate. Really takes on a whole new perspective and feel.
cool arrangement of guitars (the slide was a nice touch). the keyboard work restrained nicely with just the right touch.
the balance of the quite versus's the heavier parts has a cool impact.
illuminati
than ours. Almost relaxing despite the fervent nature of the vocals. I like the approach!
Diviner
Really well put together and produced. Everything sounds so nice. Also I have the TAL-Dub effect (only found recently), but CamelPhat and CamelSpace is my most used since March08. Anyway back to your track, I love all the elements you have used such as the metal xylophone, organ and guitars etc. Very cool remix.
vbluesky
what a gem....each time I listen it sounds different, very pro production M2 thanks for sharin........

i was just listening to another remix of this song. this is rad too. (plus you have a link to the original, so i can check that out now.)
great progression. bordering on a creepy vibe - very cool!! and, of course, i love the glockenspiel part!
lavalamp
This is a fantastic job. the best version of this song I have heard. You gave it a nice Dido-feel, which is perfect for Lisa.
Great job, Michael.

this mix turned out super ..

.. Lisa's great vocal. A very cool interpretation Michael! I particularly like the tempo/busy-ness changes.

Very well done all around. One small suggestion, and this may be a matter of personal taste BUT, Lisa, when the music builds I'd like to see you attack the vocals more aggressively. I see this as kind of a call to action and there should be some real omph! in the call....Along the line of a Grace Slick or Annie Lynix...You did very well with it, I just think it could be EVEN better....Thanks for the great download!..Peace, Norman
egobandit
YA know Im so far out of the loop I didnt realize there was another wake up. All I can say this has to be Lisa's finest performance> Great remix love the heavier part git sound spot on .. I think I live for this kind of music thanks That was great!!!!!!
Drew Kopr
Those are some great guitar parts, chords, lines and sounds! The actual sound of the guitar is right on and sweet. Very cool.

This was a magical collab!
