beauty appears. it begins to blossom. however, the mindster always interferes. it distracts from the enjoyment of beauty. it cannot be removed. beauty and the monster exist together. they are in the mind.
it is computer-generated music. it is an attempt to record the sound of the mind.

Beauty & the beast &mdash 06/21/08 - 03:07:14 AM
This is the best...Beauty & the beast tune I've heard..hehehe
Cool bass with nice pads kinda like this mix..Cheers [ Reply to This ]
it is the right synthesize &mdash 06/22/08 - 12:46:00 AM
it is good to know you like the choice of bass and sounds. you are very accomplished at creating well-mixed music. thank you. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
I feel like &mdash 06/21/08 - 08:59:34 AM
I'm in that tiny capsule in Fantastic Voyage, traveling through places not yet explored by man. Very interesting sounds in here, and it is peaceful... Very creative composition that leaves me wanting a part two! :-) [ Reply to This ]
it is a strange journey &mdash 06/22/08 - 12:50:48 AM
it was intended to be peaceful, with an edge of uncertainty. it was a short experiment. it is too short. if you are left wanting part two, i will endeavor to create extended beauty from this. thank you for your interest. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
How did the computer generate this music? &mdash 06/21/08 - 09:42:01 AM
it is a secret experiment &mdash 06/21/08 - 10:02:07 AM
it it software that uses ifs routines to map repeated patterns onto a grid. it then maps the grid values to midi instruments and pitches. it is often a failed experiment. i repeat this step. when a good pattern emerges, it is saved and moved to a sequencer. it is manually adjusted. i remove or change some notes. i repeat sections. the IFS algorithm does not create a satisfying ending. it is then time to assign synthesizers to each midi channel. i work on the voicings of each instrument. it is sometimes processed to alter the midi note velocity. it is an arduous process. it is hoped to be an unusual and pleasing result. thank you for an interest. the process is an experiment, and is a secret. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]

it is peaceful music. the mind cannot detect patterns, so it relaxes. it is a strange soothing music. thank you for enjoying it. it is a nice visit. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
Nifty &mdash 06/21/08 - 10:21:49 AM
I'm of two minds about algorithmic stuff. If I don't listen too closely, then you have very sweet sounds, and the whole thing is soothing. But if I listen a bit closer, than that piano sounds like it should mean something, but it doesn't. It's a hit and run player. A few notes here that don't lead to anything, a few notes there.
Clever, and pretty, but frustrating. To me.

yes, it is frustrating to some &mdash 06/22/08 - 12:58:39 AM
the mind is built to seek patterns. if there are no patterns, if it sees randomness... then the mind disconnects. this is not music to connect to. if i listen closely, i too must alter notes to correct the randomness. it annoys me too. this is version 1. it had very little corrections to it. i will correct the melody and progressions manually for version 2. it is useful feedback. it is interesting to consider. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]

yes &mdash 06/22/08 - 08:08:27 AM
it is pleasing that you noticed. it has not been noticed before. it is an old habit, and attempt at humour. perhaps it is obscure. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
cool &mdash 06/21/08 - 11:57:51 AM
i've done a randomly generated piece or 2 here at MJ myself. love the idea of random experimentation somehow leading to aesthetic beauty. great job. [ Reply to This ]
experimental searching &mdash 06/22/08 - 01:06:15 AM
it is a way to spark creativity. the computer seeds the idea. it still requires manual human thought to create beauty from chaos theory. however, sometimes the seed itself is beautiful. thank you for thinking about it. your musical creations are astounding. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
Sounds like fun. &mdash 06/21/08 - 12:26:24 PM
OK, so I had to look up IFS (iterated functions system), which, I gather, is an extension of music generation using fractals, in which the output of a function call is repeatedly fed back to the function, the output being mapped to a musical tone. As the number of calls gets large, attractors appear, which are often 0 or infinity. When the attractors trace a pattern between finite non-zero limits, they are called strange attractors, which should give something close to a repeating pattern.
The difference with IFS is that there is a set of distinct functions that are called either randomly, or in some prescribed order, to generate new functional outputs on a grid.
Is that more or less correct?
The output space must be restricted, right? For example, you could map to a continuous frequency range, which would sound like noise. You must have quantized the output space to the chromatic scale, where an output is assigned to the nearest pitch on the scale. Can the functions be tailored to produce strange attractors or is it totally unpredictable?
Very interesting idea. I would be interested to hear you elaborate a bit more on this. [ Reply to This ]
iterating toward the correct solution &mdash 06/22/08 - 01:18:34 AM
it is not more or less correct. it is more correct than less correct. yes, the ifs functions can be chosen to generate noise, or repeating patterns, or a range between. the values can be modulo-wrapped to notes on any scale, not just chromatic. these are many hints.
it is a personal experiment. there is not much time available to create music. there is less time available to explain the work involved in creation of the lab. perhaps these discoveries should be written down. if there is interest, i will organize the notebooks and software. organization is difficult here. part of this experiment is to interest others in gaining knowledge. you researched, so the experiment is succeeding. thank you. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
I like it. &mdash 06/22/08 - 02:06:36 PM
So glad I took this journey to unexpected and unanticipated brief sounds that appeared and disappeared from your secret place. Thank you. :) [ Reply to This ]
free the mind &mdash 06/22/08 - 04:37:50 PM
it is a short piece. it is from a small mind. perhaps there is soon time to build this into a larger piece. it needs much work. there is a rough edge in many places. there is interest in this, so there will be a version two. there is always time for more beauty. i will make time. 0x0 [ Reply to This ]
