Description:
This song does not describe my current state of mind, but I do have people around me who are besieged by sadness, fear and paranoia. I wrote this song as a way to share in their silent agony.
I was in the middle of writing this song when I decided that sampling the bass of a famous song would be fitting for its theme.
I haven't been here in a while as I have been busy with non-musical life stuff. I managed to finish this song after some time of indecision about how to proceed with its arrangement and lyrics. Aside from the bass, I also borrowed a few lyric lines from an Evanescence song. The theme is rather dark, but I wanted it to sound a little bit more pop and catchy, so I changed the beat to a more hip-hop kind of rhythm.
Lyrics:
QUIET SCREAM
Lyrics, music and vocals by Leon;
background bass by Police)
_________________________
Do I fear to live this horrid dream
I wanna cry myself a quiet scream
I wanna make it through this darkest night,
crave the light, nothing's right
somebody hear me...
Feel the menace of a whisper
I feel the rising of a danger
I wanna run away from all this strife
stabs me deep, like a knife
somebody save me...
(Refrain 1)
Try to drive away the demons in my mind
I never know what I may find
Clouds turn gray, look away
Slay the monster that lives within my soul
Do I fear to live this horrid dream
I wanna cry myself a quiet scream
I wanna make it through this darkest night,
crave the light, nothing's right
somebody hear me...
(Chorus)
I've been looking at the mirror for so long
I've come to believe my soul's on the other side
All the little pieces falling shattered
Shards of me too sharp to put back together
Feel the menace of a whisper
I feel the rising of a danger
I wanna run away from all this strife
stabs me deep, like a knife
somebody save me...
(Refrain 2)
Try to drive away the demons in my mind
I never know what I may find
Clouds turn gray, look away
Slay the beast that dwells within my soul
Do I fear to live this horrid dream
I wanna cry myself a quiet scream
I wanna make it through this lonely night,
crave the light, nothing's right
somebody hear me...
[Repeat Chorus]
ooohhh...together...
Somebody's watching me...
every move I make...
every breath I take...
every vow I break...
every breath I take...
somebody's watching me...

You are the most generous guy when it comes to inspiring people to give their best. you always find time to listen to other people's work and give a thoughtful remark and that is truly appreciated by many Macjammers. [ Reply to This ]

one suggestion &mdash 06/23/08 - 10:27:38 AM
man, this is really well done. And like always, I love the emotion that comes through in your singing... the recording is perfect, no surprise there. I think this might be the first time I've ever listened to one of your songs and wanted to make a suggestion. I felt like you could have cut the beat after the first chorus right after "I feel the menace of a whisper" (where the strings come in) and brought it back at the end of the line "Somebody save me..." for the refrain. I think it might add to the build up before the refrain and just enhance the progression of the song as a whole. Because you used a fairly strong hip-hop beat, cutting it out and bringing it back in as the song builds may help the rhythm really add to the emotion and drive of the song. ... sounds great as it is though.

Hi, mike, &mdash 06/24/08 - 09:30:05 PM
your pointers are well appreciated. i admire your musical sensibility especially when it comes to current pop and hip hop sound, which is why I think you have a really good point. this song is imperfect in a few ways, and i certainly would try putting your suggestion into practice when i revise this sometime soon. Great Song &mdash 06/23/08 - 10:38:49 AM
Hi Leon
Xellent voice you have once again and very awesome. The content and the words gives meaning to a lot of people who have been there (me to).
It's great that you have the reserve of strength to build it and complete the song also with this good result. I can imagine the hard process making it.
Thanks for your will to share it.
Take care, Claus

Thanks, man! &mdash 06/24/08 - 09:51:07 PM
This song is close to my personal experience in terms of its theme. Singing about people's emotions and thoughts is my way of empathizing and expressing my understanding of what they go through in life. I had similar issues in the past but I am thankful to have found the courage to overcome adversity. This song reminds me of our human weakness, and recognizing that gives us the strength of mind to find a way to wrestle with life's challenges.
Thanks for your thoughtful remarks. [ Reply to This ]
Strong &mdash 06/23/08 - 02:47:02 PM
Very strong vocal performance. There are bits of all sorts of pop songs here working as background. Makes for a new but familiar sound. Good stuff.
Thanks

The only pop song part i "borrowed" was the pulsing bass of Every Breath You Take which appears at the end. It does have other elements that may remind you of some bubble gum and classic pop and hip hop from past and present. I think that is a good thing ;-) Thanks for your keen observation and inspiring feedback. [ Reply to This ]

thoddi... &mdash 06/24/08 - 09:35:54 PM
thanks for passing by to listen. Every Breath You Take has one of the most recognizable background bass in pop music history, so I couldn't resist putting a little bit of it in the background. I hope Sting will not sting me for this little steal. haha. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent! &mdash 06/24/08 - 05:34:34 PM
Great to see you back again. This is really a great song and your vocals are wonderful. The subject matter may be a little darker, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's got a very catchy sound and I loved the "references" at the end. A very nice touch.
Thanks for sharing and good to see you back again. [ Reply to This ]

Of all the comments here, I wondered why yours had the most feel-good effect on me. Maybe, because you and I share the same love for pop-rock and my style does not diverge much from yours, although you have a wider range of genres you try. You were also the first one who commented on my very first songs and you seem to appreciate my growth as a musician over the past few years. Thanks for your continuing support and appreciation. the admiration is mutual.
The bass line at the end was irresistibly 80's so i just spontaneously started singing the Police song.. i thought it fit well in terms of the message, and I'm glad you felt the same way too. [ Reply to This ]

way to go Leon &mdash 06/24/08 - 11:22:50 PM
sounds very pro! even with the darker side of emotion in the lyrics, it still comes off as being a bit uplifting. I think you pulled that off very well.
the mix is great, i liked the little things that went into this, ke the "quite screams" far in the background. the fade out with the nod to the police's every breathe was fun too. [ Reply to This ]
passion &mdash 06/26/08 - 11:45:31 PM
Hey Leon,
I know how non-Macjams life stuff can demand time.....who knew? I've been less-than-active for the same reasons, but had to show up to hear your new thang. As usual crystalline vocals, deep passion. This one seems to have a lot of honest emotion and passion. Lovely soft pad synths, driving bridge. Good stuff!
