Acoustic (476)guitar (877)suitor (1)vocal (150)
Description:
Finally happy with a guitar solo - after 25 years :-)

From a collection of songs called 'Next Year's Hasbeens' which is sort of coming together......

Lyrics:
She comes and goes
She comes and goes
But no-one knows where her affections lie

Her suitors fall about her feet
She sees them all but she never speaks
Nobody knows where here attention lies

She's trying to make her mind up
She's said she'll make her mind up
She's promised herself to make her mind up

But still nobody knows
Nobody knows at all
Nobody knows his name
Nobody knows at all

She comes and goes
She comes and goes
But no-one knows where her affection lies

Those suitors fall about her feet
She sees them all but she never speaks
Nobody knows where here attention lies

She's trying to make her mind up
She's said she'll make her mind up
You know I think she's made her mind up!

But still nobody knows
Nobody knows at all
Nobody knows his name
Nobody knows..........

Nice playing, laid back and dreamy, and sung in a natural 'English' voice. First track I've heard of yours Cadman, and I like it. Welcome to MacJams!

Thanks Phil........ &mdash 06/23/08 - 08:36:30 AM
Hey - of course, glad you liked it.

Best of luck with your Eridol Keyboard - mine just died (well - bits of it did).

Your words on It's Alll the Same have re-inspired me to visit that part of the World.......Hanoi to Siagon by train is on the list (just did London to Istanbul) - a side visit to Cambodia must be added, clearly ;-)

Very nice tune... &mdash 06/23/08 - 09:45:40 AM
...I really like your playing on it...understated and clean. Lets the vox/lyrics stand out...very nice vox/lyrics.

If I might make a suggestion: during the fills (not the solo), you might consider edging the volume down a bit on the 2nd guitar. I like the lines, but felt that they were a bit too loud and, thus, a bit distracting.

Thanks for the invite...

Too loud? &mdash 06/23/08 - 10:01:26 AM
Must have been because I was soooooo pleased with myself when I played it :-)

Taylor sound = yummy! &mdash 06/23/08 - 10:53:16 AM
Great playing. I agree with guitarpick that the 2nd guitar lines sort of jump out a little bit. When the first one came in it startled me slightly.

Having the 2nd guitar in the left channel also causes the stereo balance to be unbalanced. Perhaps if you copied the guitar track (or doubled the part or wrote a counter part) and then panned each track separately you could lessen this. Or another idea is to put a delay on it and send that delay panned right somewhere.

Very nice and laid back!

I did very much want the lead line to be quite separate - but I can see that maybe I've overdone it a tad.

Loved both the guitar sounds - no significant FX on either of them. The K.Yairi sounds so mellow up the neck.........

Cheers - JC

What's your gear? &mdash 06/23/08 - 01:52:38 PM
What audio interface and microphones did you use to record this song? They sound great!

Recording......... &mdash 06/23/08 - 03:00:38 PM
Hiya,

Audio Interface - Trusty Tascam US-122 (soon to be dumped for a USB2.0 multi-input box TBD)

Mic - Rode NT1-A (which I love)

Can't remember if I used ye olde Taylor K4 EQ box or not. I think probably not TBH.

Ah - that reminds me.......I was going to fiddle with the panning on that, wasn't I.....

Thanks &mdash 06/24/08 - 01:17:22 AM
So you recorded the guitar in mono (with one mic)? If you did use only one mic you sure got a nice full sound.

I also have a Rode NT-1A and I really like mine also. I'm using it for the first time on a new song I'm working on and it is super!

Thanks for sharing what you use for hardware.

Taylor - is electro-acoustic :-) &mdash 06/24/08 - 05:51:53 AM
So I just plugged it straight into the US-122, (possibly via the K4, but i don't think so) - then into GB via USB.

Likewise the K.Yaini

As you say - nice sound. Getting a good sound mic-ing up a guitar is tricky.

So... &mdash 06/24/08 - 11:14:16 AM
So with the Taylor did you blend the mic'd signal with the amplified signal (from the guitar)?

[ Reply to This ]
Nope! &mdash 06/24/08 - 05:49:19 PM
I feel like I'm being a bit of a tease with this one.

Guitars were recorded (effectively) DI.

Mic was used for vocals recorded after the event.

So no mixing of mic and DI for the guitars- and no animals were harmed during the recording :-)

On both guitars the electronics are such that they pick up lots of the character of the instrument. V happy with those sounds.

Wow! &mdash 06/25/08 - 12:31:31 AM
Wow! That's a great DI sound! I've been wanting a Taylor for years now but this might just be a deciding factor in me buying one sooner rather than later. Thanks for the info!

Yup.......... &mdash 06/25/08 - 08:05:59 AM
Taylors are very, very reliable.

I bought mine last year having played the same model in Vancouver on a business trip and almost immediately finding one on eBay when I got back home.

Don't think I would have risked it with another make.

Problem is - they are fairly expensive; luckily I bought mine 2nd hand from someone in the US, which made it effectively half-price.

ps It arrived in the UK all the away from Little Rock without a scratch. Those Taylor Hard Cases are pretty bullet proof.

Very nice .. &mdash 06/25/08 - 08:15:06 AM

.. reminded me a little of Billy Bragg. Fine vocals and playing ..only nit was the high pitched acoustic solo notes .. in the L .. seemed a bit prominent .. I might have evenly panned them L/R (duplicated) .. sat them a bit further back in the mix .. and gave them a slight touch more reverb... aiming for a more wispy/dreaming ambience from that part - which was fine, this was just a minor production nit.

Welcome to MJs.

Being Panned....... &mdash 06/25/08 - 09:16:23 AM
No problem being compared to BB - his New England is one of my very fav songs - although of course Billy is an Essex boy and I'm from, "Sarth Laandan, innit"

As per other comments - I'll have to fiddle around a bit with the panning of the acoustic solo at some point and see if I can make it - to use the technical term - better :-)

Listening to it more - particularly over headphones - it does need a bit of tweaking.

Recording......... &mdash 06/30/08 - 10:46:51 AM
Hi - ta for listening.

Re Recording - nothing fancy at all on this one.

Guitars plug straight into the USB interface (as they are electro-acoustic) so they are recorded as 'Real Instruments' in GB.

Likewise, the vocal line - except via a nice Rode NT1-A mic. Not at the same time, but as a separate track.

That's it.

What are you using to make your own stuff?

Cheers - JC

Thanks for the kind comment - when someone says I/we have an original sound, I get very happy/self-satisfied.

However, at the same time, out there somewhere, I expect a musical fairy dies :-)

Hello &mdash 07/10/08 - 04:03:06 PM
I think this is the first of heard of yours Cadman. I really enjoyed the listen. Your unashamedly English vocal delivery was refreshing. Guitars are great too!
Cheers

Ah........ &mdash 07/10/08 - 06:26:22 PM
Not Unashamedly English - more Mildly Embarrassed :-)

Of course, thanks for listening and your kind comments - and very glad you like the tune.
